Description
-Ranger Clip-On Steel Wheel Weight Coated - 25 Pcs
This is the smallest step Ranger offers in its coated clip-on range, and it exists for one job: the last correction, the one you make after the balancer has already been satisfied once. A quarter-ounce is too small to fix a real imbalance and it is not meant to. It is the trim weight — the piece that turns a wheel that reads acceptable into a wheel that reads zero.
The smallest step in the ladder
Every balancing job ends the same way. The machine calls for a correction, the technician fits it, the wheel spins again, and the readout comes back with a small residual figure. At that point there are two choices: accept it, or correct it with a weight small enough that it does not overshoot in the other direction. If the smallest weight on the shelf is an ounce, the second option does not exist, so the residual is accepted by default and the customer drives away with a wheel that is close rather than right.
Stocking the quarter-ounce is what makes that second spin worth doing. It is a cheap box that changes the standard of work in the bay, which is a better argument for it than anything about the weight itself.
Where a quarter of an ounce actually changes the outcome
Small residuals are not evenly annoying. Their effect grows with rotational speed, so an imbalance that is invisible around town is exactly the one a customer notices at highway speed, felt through the wheel as a fine, high-frequency buzz rather than the low wobble of a badly out-of-balance wheel. That fine buzz is the classic comeback complaint, and it is frequently the residual nobody bothered to trim.
Light alloy wheels make this worse rather than better. There is less rotating mass for a given imbalance to work against, and modern wheel and tire assemblies are stiff enough to transmit what they feel straight into the cabin instead of absorbing it. Fine correction is not a luxury on that kind of assembly.
Coated steel, and what the coating is actually for
These are steel weights with an applied coating. The coating is doing two things at once and only one of them is about appearance.
The visible job is protecting the wheel: a coated face bearing against a painted or machined rim flange is a gentler contact than bare steel, so the weight is less likely to leave a witness mark where it sits. The invisible job is protecting the weight. Bare steel clamped to a wheel lives in the worst environment on a vehicle, taking road spray, brake dust, de-icing salt and wash chemicals continuously. Rust there is not just untidy — corrosion products swell, the clip loses tension against the flange, and a weight that has lost tension is a weight that will eventually leave. The coating is what delays that whole sequence.
Will it fit your wheels?
The catalogue lists the style of these weights as Clip-on / Pfe. That is a clip-profile designation, and it matters, because a clip is shaped to match the cross-section of the rim flange it grips. The wrong profile does not sit flush, and a weight that does not sit flush is a weight under permanent load, trying to spring off.
So the fitment question here is not about vehicle make or wheel diameter, it is about flange shape. If you are running a mix of steel and alloy wheels through the bay and are not certain which profile suits which, send us a note before you order a full box and we will work it out with you.
Perfect For
- Tire shops that re-spin after fitting a correction and want the ability to trim a residual instead of accepting it.
- Alignment and vibration diagnostics work, where a fine buzz at speed is the actual complaint being chased.
- Dealership and fleet bays answering ride-quality concerns on nearly new vehicles.
- Mobile balancing services restocking a full range of steps so the van never runs out of the small ones first.
What's in the Box
A box of 25 coated clip-on steel weights, each of them a quarter of an ounce. No adhesive pads, no primer, no applicator — a clip-on weight needs nothing except a clean flange and a wheel weight hammer.

Compliance and certification, stated plainly
Wheel weights sit in a regulated corner of the parts catalogue, because lead content in them is restricted by a number of states and by national environmental rules. This particular listing's own published data does not carry a statement about lead content or an independent laboratory certification, and we are not going to write one in on its behalf. If your shop has to demonstrate compliant weight sourcing — for a state programme, an environmental audit or a fleet contract — ask us for the manufacturer's documentation for this part number before ordering. That is a question we can answer with paperwork rather than with a claim on a web page.
Shipping and delivery
A box of these is a small parcel, not a freight shipment, and we ship within the lower 48 states. Check the carton on arrival: if it has been crushed or a seam is open, write that on the carrier's paperwork before you sign, because a note made at the door is what keeps a damage claim simple. If collecting suits you better, the Ranger pick-up locations are listed further down this page.
Warranty
Ranger publishes a written warranty covering its products, and that document rather than a summary here is what governs any claim, so we have not paraphrased a term. Ask us for the current copy if you want to read it before you order. If a box arrives with damaged or malformed clips, contact us before you try to bend them back into shape — a reworked clip cannot be assessed, and straightening one almost always ends the claim.
