PSB-PMR1088-AK: a mixing room that can be built either way round

A paint mixing room is not a small spray booth. Its job is to take the one activity that generates solvent vapour without any spraying at all — opening, decanting, weighing and mixing — out of your general shop air and put it in a ventilated, lit, filtered enclosure. Done properly it improves two things at once: the air your staff breathe all day, and the cleanliness of the mixes, because a mixing bench in an open shop collects everything the shop puts in the air.

The specification that makes this iDEAL room easy to actually install is that it can be built either way round. Inside dimensions are 10'L x 8'W x 8'H or 8'L x 10'W x 8'H, with the personnel door placed to the side or the front of the room as you prefer. You fit the room to the wall you have, rather than rearranging a shop around a fixed box — which on a mixing room, usually squeezed into whatever corner is left, is the difference between a clean installation and a compromise.

The door is pre-hung, and that matters more than it sounds

The personnel door arrives pre-hung, 36"W, with a viewing window. Pre-hung means the door and its frame come as one squared, aligned assembly rather than as parts you align on site. On a bolted panel structure, a site-hung door in a frame that is fractionally out is a door that never quite seals or never quite latches — and a mixing room door that does not seal is a mixing room that ventilates your shop instead of itself. The viewing window lets someone see whether the room is occupied without opening it.

Ventilation sized for the job

Exhaust is a UL Listed Dayton 12" tube-axial fan with spark-resistant blades, on a non-spark, NEMA-rated, 1/2 HP, 3PH, 208-230/460VAC, 60HZ motor. Rated airflow is CFM 1,429 at .5 static pressure, with premium AFC intake and exhaust filters.

That is a deliberately smaller fan than a spray booth's, and it should be. A mixing room is ventilating evaporation from open containers, not atomised paint from a gun, and the design target is steady air change rather than the velocity needed to carry overspray away from a panel. Intake filtration matters as much as exhaust here: air pulled into the room is air that ends up in an open can, and a mixing room drawing dirty shop air through an unfiltered inlet defeats its own purpose. Single-phase electrical configuration is available as an ordered option, as is the PSB-13DUCTKIT-8 duct kit.

Lighting you are allowed to use in there

Two LDPI industrial fixtures rated Cls1 / Div 2, Groups A, B, C and D, UL and ETL listed, with inside-access hinged glass doors so lamps are changed from inside the room. Lamps are GE T8 fluorescent, 32W, 5000K, 48" long, eight supplied.

Two points follow from that. The Cls1/Div2 rating is what makes the fixtures acceptable in a space where flammable vapour may be present — ordinary shop lighting is not, and this is the first thing an inspector looks at. And 5000K is near-daylight, which is the reason a colour mixed in this room stands a chance of matching a panel sprayed elsewhere. Mixing under warm shop lighting and matching under daylight is a recipe for a re-spray.

Will It Fit?

  • Inside: 10'L x 8'W x 8'H, or 8'L x 10'W x 8'H if that suits your wall better.
  • Outside: 12'-6"L x 8'-4"W x 9'-4"H, or 8'-4"L x 12'-6"W x 9'-4"H in the flipped configuration. Use the outside figures for planning and leave clearance behind the room for filter access.
  • Ceiling. Check the outside height against your lowest obstruction, then add the duct run above it. The optional duct kit is 8' with a 13" diameter.
  • Power. 1/2 HP, 3PH, 208-230/460VAC, 60HZ standard; 1PH to order. Confirm the supply and disconnect with an electrician before it ships.
  • Floor. The room bolts together and stands on your slab. No concrete specification appears in iDEAL's data for it and we will not invent one, but a level floor is not optional — bolted panels that are fighting an uneven slab do not square up, and a door in a racked frame will not seal.
  • Approval. Mixing rooms are permitted and inspected locally, and storage quantities inside them are often part of that conversation. Ask your authority having jurisdiction for its requirements in writing before you order.

Listings and compliance, kept apart

The fan carries a UL listing and the light fixtures carry UL and ETL listings for Cls1 / Div2 — both are component listings held by their makers. The room itself is stated to meet or exceed applicable OSHA and NFPA 33 regulations, which is compliance with published standards, not a listing on the product.

Neither substitutes for local approval, and a mixing room attracts more of it than a booth does, because how much material you keep in it is usually part of the permit. Get the requirements in writing from your authority having jurisdiction before ordering and send them to us — the answer sometimes changes which options you need.

Shipping and Delivery

Freight to the lower 48, as pallets of panels plus the fan, fixtures, door and control gear. It needs a forklift or a dock at the delivery point — the driver will not unload it. Terminal pickup is the fallback where a site has no equipment, and warehouse pickup is available at our iDEAL locations.

Inspect before you sign. Panels and the pre-hung door frame are what freight damage ruins here, and a racked door frame is not something you can true up on site. Photograph everything, check the pallets against the packing list, and note damage on the bill of lading with the driver present.

Residential delivery carries a residential fee, and freight is quoted live at checkout for your own ZIP code.

Warranty

Terms and the claim route are on our warranty claims page. Do not take a suspect fan, fixture or control apart before the claim is opened — photograph it in place and call us.
