Rated for More Than Half the Vehicle — Which Is the Only Way to Handle an Offset Load

The BendPak RBJ18000 is an 18,000 lb rolling bridge jack, and the capacity figure is the whole engineering argument. A bridge jack lifts one end of a vehicle already sitting on a four-post lift, so the intuitive assumption is that it only needs half the vehicle's weight. That assumption is wrong for the vehicles this jack exists to serve. A loaded truck, a bus or a commercial chassis rarely carries its centre of gravity at the midpoint, and when it does not, one axle can be carrying substantially more than half the total. Even a 30,000 lb vehicle can present an axle load that a jack rated at exactly half would be under.

Rating this jack at 18,000 lbs is what gives you that margin. It is not headroom for its own sake — it is the difference between checking your vehicle's actual axle weights and hoping they are even.

Will It Fit? — And What It Needs

The lift it rides on. BendPak's specification sheet lists the RBJ18000 as suited to the HDS-40 Series four-post lift. Bridge jacks are matched to runway spacing, not chosen freely, so this is the first thing to confirm rather than the last. See the note below about a discrepancy in the source documents on this point.

Support base width is 45" — the dimension that has to sit correctly across your lift's runways.

Drive-over height. This is what determines whether the jack can sit under a vehicle already parked on the runways, and it varies with which pads are fitted: 9" with the short arm pads, 9.75" with the short top pads, 10.5" with the tall arm pads and 11.25" with the tall top pads. Choose your pad configuration against the lowest vehicle you service, not the tallest.

Lifting height follows the same four configurations: 19" with short arm pads, 19.75" with short top pads, 20.5" with tall arm pads and 21.25" with tall top pads.

Reach. Arm pad reach adjusts from 48.5" to 63.75"; top pad reach from 8" to 39.5". Between the two pad styles that is a wide span of contact positions — necessary, because a heavy-duty chassis rarely offers a lift point where a car does.

Power: none. There is no electrical requirement. The jack runs entirely on shop air — 125 PSI, drawing up to 25 CFM — through an air/hydraulic pump. That means no circuit to run out to the lift and no cord across the bay, but it does mean your compressor has to keep up. If your air system is already marginal at 125 PSI, size that before the jack arrives.

Your responsibility. Confirming lift compatibility, your vehicle's actual axle weights, and your air supply is the buyer's job. We are happy to go through it with you before you order.

7,200 PSI, and Why the Hydraulic Pressure Is the Interesting Number

Maximum operating hydraulic pressure is 7,200 PSI. That figure is what allows a jack of this physical size to raise 18,000 lbs — force is pressure multiplied by cylinder area, so a higher working pressure buys capacity without a proportionally larger cylinder. The practical consequence for a shop is that the jack stays low enough to roll under a vehicle on the runways, which a lower-pressure design of the same capacity would struggle to do.

Steel Contact Pads and Three Lock Levels

Four steel contact pads support the axle and the vehicle's lift points. Steel rather than a softer material is the right call on a heavy-duty jack: at these loads a compliant pad deforms, and a deforming pad is one that can walk out of position. The jack itself is low-profile, so the pads still fit under low-stance vehicles despite the capacity.

Three lock positions set the working height. This matters more than it sounds. Different operators, different vehicle clearances and different ceiling heights all push toward a different ideal working height, and being able to lock at a chosen level rather than only at full extension is what keeps a technician from working with their arms above their head for an hour. Control is by foot pedal, so both hands stay free and on the vehicle.

Perfect For

  • Heavy-duty truck and bus shops doing wheel-off work on vehicles already up on a four-post lift.
  • Fleet maintenance operations where axle weights vary by load and a jack rated at exactly half the vehicle is not good enough.
  • Shops adding wheel service capability to an existing heavy-duty four-post lift — brake, tire and suspension work that a four-post alone cannot do.
  • Bays with no spare electrical capacity. Air only; no circuit to install.

What's in the Box

The jack ships with the rolling bridge assembly, the four steel contact pads, the air/hydraulic power unit and the foot pedal control. The air-line kit — which lets two jacks share a single air supply, the usual arrangement when you run a pair — is an optional accessory and is not included. If you are buying two jacks to work a vehicle at both ends, add the air-line kit to the same order.

Confirm lift compatibility with us before you order

The sources for this product do not agree on which four-post lifts the RBJ18000 fits. BendPak's specification sheet lists the HDS-40 Series. The long-standing product copy refers to the HDS-35 and HDS-40 series, and elsewhere in the same text to an HD-35. We are not going to resolve that by guessing, because a bridge jack that does not match your runway spacing is not a minor inconvenience — it is an unusable purchase and an awkward freight return.

Tell us the exact model of the lift you own and we will confirm compatibility against BendPak's current documentation before the order goes through.

Certification, Stated Plainly

The product data we hold for this jack carries no certification claim, and we are not going to write one in. We cannot confirm from this listing's data whether the RBJ18000 holds a third-party lift safety listing.

A third-party lift safety listing is issued by an independent testing body, and it is not the same document as a manufacturer's own declaration of conformity. Insurers, fleet safety policies and some local jurisdictions require it specifically for equipment in commercial service. If yours does, get the requirement in writing and contact us — we will confirm the current position with BendPak before you commit.

Shipping and Delivery

Ships by freight to the lower 48 states, quoted live at checkout for your destination so the rate is current rather than an estimate. You must be able to unload the shipment or take pickup at the carrier's terminal — it arrives crated and heavy, so plan for a forklift, a loading dock, or an equipment trailer and enough hands. Residential delivery is available and carries a residential fee.

Inspect before you sign. Check the crate and its contents while the driver is present and note any damage on the bill of lading before signing. A clean signed BOL makes a freight damage claim very hard to pursue.

Warranty

Covered by BendPak's published warranty, linked on this page. That document governs coverage, term and the claim process, and nothing here restates a term it does not state.

Do not disassemble, modify or attempt a repair before filing a warranty claim. It is the most common reason a valid claim is denied. Stop using the equipment, photograph the fault in place, and contact us first.
