Atlas TC229 + PWB50: read the warranty and you can see which machine is the good one

Combination packages usually carry one warranty across both machines. This one does not, and the difference is informative. The TC229 rim-clamp swing-arm tire changer carries the standard 1 year parts-only cover. The PWB50 — the Platinum-tier balancer, built on Italian engineering and Italian components — carries an extended 2 year parts-only warranty. A manufacturer backing one machine for twice as long as the other is telling you where the money in the package went, and it is worth knowing that before you compare this pairing against a cheaper one.

That is the shape of this combination: a competent, conventional commercial changer alongside a balancer a tier above it. Both run on 110V. For a shop where balancing quality is what customers notice and tire changing is simply work that has to happen, it is a sensible way to spend the budget.

Sized for cars and light trucks — and honest about the ceiling

This is the point to be clear about before anything else. The TC229 takes a maximum tire diameter of 39″ and a maximum wheel width at the bead breaker of 13″. The PWB50 balances up to 43″ diameter, rims from 10″ to 30″, rim widths from 1 1/2″ to 20″, and wheels up to 165 lbs.

Those are passenger-car and light-truck numbers, and they are perfectly adequate for the overwhelming majority of what rolls into a general repair shop. They are not agricultural or heavy-truck numbers, and they will not comfortably swallow oversized off-road tires. If a meaningful share of your work is large-diameter or extra-wide, look at a larger changer in the range instead of buying this and discovering the limit on a Tuesday morning. Matching the machine to the work you actually do is worth more than headroom you will never use.

What your bay needs

Confirming your own services is the buyer’s responsibility, and only one of these usually needs arranging.

• Power. Both machines are 110V. Nothing special required.
• Air. The changer’s jaws and bead breaker are air operated, and the supply is external and not included. Working pressure is 90-110 PSI and it must not exceed 140 PSI. A filter, regulator and lubricator ship with the machine; the compressor does not.
• Floor. The balancer requires no anchor-down installation, so it can be positioned and repositioned as the bay layout changes. The changer wants a level floor with clear swing room for the arm.
• Unloading. The changer is 550 lbs and the balancer 230 lbs. Plan for a forklift, a dock, or warehouse pickup.

Inside the Platinum balancer

The PWB50 is a motorised spin balancer with automatic 2D data entry, which removes the step where an operator measures a rim and types the numbers in — the step that produces most of the confidently wrong balance corrections in this trade. It spins at 130 RPM, reads to 1 gram, positions weights to 1.4 degrees, and completes a cycle in 7 seconds.

Above that sit the programs that make it a Platinum machine rather than a basic one. Optimatch, FES split-weight and OPF opposite-position functions all deal with the same practical problem: where to put the correction so it works and does not show. Special ALU-S and other ALU programs handle alloy wheels, where the weight cannot simply be clipped to a rim edge. An NWN system — no wheel need — allows calibration and function without a wheel mounted. And a USB hub takes firmware updates from a PC or notebook, which is a genuinely unusual feature at this level and the reason this machine can be improved rather than replaced when the software moves on.

The safety and handling details are the ones you use every day: automatic start and stop as the hood is lowered and raised, an automatic brake plus a pedal brake for positioning by hand, static and dynamic modes, self-diagnosis and self-calibration, readouts in grams or ounces and in millimetres or inches, and a 40mm shaft.

The changer: three jaw positions and a beadblaster

The TC229 is a rim-clamp swing-arm machine with an electric turntable driven by a 1 HP motor producing 885 ft/lbs of rotating torque, and a bead breaker rated at 5,500 lb of force. Its jaws adjust across three mounting positions — clamping externally at 9 3/4″-21 5/8″, 10 3/4″-22 1/2″ and 11 5/8″-23 1/4″, and internally at 11 5/8″-23 1/4″, 12 5/8″-24 1/4″ and 13 1/2″-25 1/4″.

Three positions rather than one range is not marketing. A jaw working at the extreme end of its travel grips at a bad angle and is where alloy rims get marked. Being able to move the clamping range up or down means most wheels are gripped in the middle of a position instead of at the edge of one. The mount/demount head takes a metal roller or replaceable plastic inserts, spares for which are supplied, and a built-in beadblaster seats stubborn beads with a burst of air rather than repeated attempts.

Certification, stated plainly

Both machines carry the CE marking, and precision helps here. CE is the manufacturer’s own declaration of conformity against European directives — a real statement with real obligations, but a self-declaration rather than an independent North American third-party listing. The two documents are not interchangeable and one does not stand in for the other. For most shops this never arises. It arises when an insurer, a franchise standard or a local inspection regime names a specific listing body. If yours does, obtain the requirement in writing and check it with us before ordering.

Shipping and Delivery

Both machines move as freight within the lower 48 states. Together they are well past what two people can handle, so a forklift or a loading dock is needed at the delivery address — or take warehouse pickup instead, with locations listed further down this page. Residential delivery is available and carries a fee, quoted live at checkout rather than printed here, because carrier pricing moves.

Inspect the freight before you sign for it. Count the pieces against the paperwork, look for punctures, crushed corners and shifted banding, and record any damage or shortage on the bill of lading while the driver is still there. A clean signature is the carrier’s proof the shipment arrived in good order, and it makes a later claim considerably harder.

The TC229 carries 1 year parts only. The PWB50 carries an extended 2 year parts only. Parts only means a covered component is supplied and the labour to fit it is not included.
