-TOPDON ArtiDiag500 Entry-Level Diagnostic Scanner
Most tools sold at the entry level stop at reading and clearing a code. The ArtiDiag500 carries the full OBD-II mode set instead — including the oxygen sensor test, the on-board monitor test, EVAP system testing and I/M readiness monitor status — and that is the difference between a tool that tells you a light is on and a tool that tells you whether the car will pass an emissions retest.
That matters in a very specific, very common situation. Clear a code and the readiness monitors reset with it; take the car straight to a test station and it fails on incomplete monitors even though the original fault is fixed. A scanner that can show you monitor status tells you when the car is actually ready to go, instead of leaving you to guess and drive it twice.
The emissions toolkit, explained
The OBD-II functions on this tool are read and clear DTCs, live data, I/M readiness monitor status, freeze frame data, oxygen sensor test, on-board monitor test, EVAP system test (Mode $8) and read vehicle information.
Freeze frame captures the operating conditions at the moment a fault was stored — engine speed, load, coolant temperature and so on. A code tells you what; freeze frame tells you when, and when is usually what identifies the cause.
The oxygen sensor test reports the sensor's own performance data rather than making you infer it from live voltages, which is how you separate a lazy sensor from a genuine mixture problem.
The EVAP test commands the evaporative emissions system, the source of the single most common and most irritating check-engine light in the fleet. Being able to command it rather than only read its complaints is a real capability at this price.
Four systems, not just the engine
Beyond generic OBD-II, the ArtiDiag500 performs four-system diagnostics: engine, transmission, ABS and SRS airbag. Coverage is published as 42 vehicle makes. Send us your year, make and model, or your VIN, and we will confirm your specific vehicle is supported before you order — a coverage count in the abstract has never told anybody whether their own car is on the list.
Airbag and ABS access on an entry-level tool is worth calling out. Those are the two systems where a generic code reader gives you nothing at all, and they are also the two systems whose warning lights fail an inspection.
Access to what the car is actually running
The tool reads ECU information, so you can identify the module and software actually fitted rather than the one the parts catalogue expects. It displays live data streams and will graph and merge them for analysis, which is how a value that looks fine in isolation reveals itself as wrong relative to everything around it.
A built-in DTC look-up library gives code definitions on the tool, so you are not typing a code into a phone with dirty hands. The vehicle history function takes you directly back into a previous session, which is what you want when a car comes back and you would rather see what the tool recorded than trust what you remember.
AutoVIN and the battery voltage monitor
One-touch AutoVIN identifies the vehicle from the vehicle and loads the matching diagnostic software, instead of walking you through four menus and a guess about which engine variant is fitted. Picking the wrong variant is the commonest reason a scan returns confusing results, and AutoVIN removes the opportunity.
The battery voltage monitor displays system voltage in real time. That sounds minor and is not: weak batteries and poor earths generate a remarkable share of the electrical faults that get misdiagnosed as failed components. Seeing voltage while you crank or while a module is commanded often ends the investigation before it starts.
Reports, updates and support
Diagnostic reports are generated automatically and can be shared by email, which turns a verbal explanation into something a customer can hold. Updates are one-click over Wi-Fi. The feedback function sends a question, with its context attached, straight to online technical assistance from the tool itself. The menu is multilingual.
Will it work in your bay?
Operating voltage is 9–18 V, taken from the vehicle. The lower end is the important end: system voltage drops sharply while cranking, and a tool that reboots at that moment cannot help you diagnose a cranking fault.
The unit is 232 x 126 x 34 mm — 34 mm, or 1.3 inch, thick — and weighs 565 g (19.92 oz), which is a comfortable one-handed tool rather than a tablet you need somewhere to put down. The shipping carton is 272 x 218 x 80 mm, so 80 mm (3.15") deep, if you are planning drawer or case storage.
Published working temperature is -10 to 50°C (14 to 122°F) and storage is -20 to 70°C (-4 to 158°F). Note that a truck cab or an unheated bay in a hard winter can sit below the working figure. Where the tool lives between jobs is the owner's call.
The display
The screen is a 5-inch LCD at 1,280 x 720. On a panel that size that is a genuinely dense display, and density is what decides whether a merged live-data graph is readable or a smear. On an entry-level tool it is the specification most likely to be quietly cut, so it is worth knowing this one was not. The operating system is Android 7.1.
Perfect for
- Home mechanics who want to know whether a car will pass its emissions test, not just whether a light is on.
- Small independent shops needing airbag and ABS access without a mid-tier tool budget.
- Used-car buyers and small dealers running a four-system check and a readiness status in a few minutes on the forecourt.
- Anyone who has failed an emissions retest on incomplete monitors and does not intend to do it twice.
What's in the box
Our product information covers the scanner. The carton contents are not itemised in the data we hold and we are not going to guess at a list. If a particular cable or adapter is decisive for you, ask us before ordering and we will confirm it.

Approvals, stated plainly
We hold no record of an independent third-party listing for this scanner, and we are not going to imply one. For a plug-in diagnostic tool it is rarely a compliance question, but approved-equipment lists do exist in fleet contracts and franchised workshop agreements. If you are bound by one, check this model against it before ordering, and ask us what documentation is supplied.
Shipping
This ships as a parcel to the lower 48 states. Give the carton a proper look before the driver goes; if a corner is crushed or something rattles, write it on the delivery paperwork at that moment rather than signing clean and telephoning later, because the note on the paperwork is what carries a claim. Unbox it the same day and check the connector pins are straight. Delivery to a residential address may add a fee, calculated at checkout.
Warranty
TOPDON's warranty terms apply, and our warranty claims page explains how to open a claim through us. File the claim before anyone takes the case apart or cuts into the lead — disassembly refuses more otherwise-valid claims than defects do, and the fault will keep until the paperwork is finished.
