A four-point base on the same floor will always sit on three of its feet and rock onto the fourth under load, and that rock is movement in a support that must not move.

Where it earns its money: when the centre of gravity moves

Start removing a gearbox, an engine or a differential and that balance changes while the vehicle is still in the air — sometimes considerably, and always in the direction of the component you have just unbolted. The lowered figure of 55" (1,397 mm) is the one that decides whether this stand suits your shop at all: it is designed to go under a raised vehicle and it will not fit under a car on the floor. And two responsibilities remain yours. The floor must be sound, level concrete, because a screw stand puts its whole load through a small area. And the vehicle must be positioned so the stands meet solid structure, not a floor pan or a plastic undertray.
A note on the published specification: the base is listed under a heading that reads "diameter" but is given as 24" x 24", which is a square footprint rather than a circle. We have quoted the figures exactly as published and mention the labelling so nobody plans a space around the wrong shape.
The screw, the handle and the pad
Height is set by a hardened ACME screw turned by a quick-adjust spin handle running on a thrust bearing. The ACME form is a coarse, square-shouldered thread that carries load along its flanks instead of wedging, and holds its setting under the vibration of an impact gun working overhead. The thrust bearing is what lets the handle be turned by hand with weight already on the pad — without one, fine adjustment under load stops being a one-person job.
On top, a thick adjustable rubber pad spreads the contact and grips, so the stand is not pressing bare steel into a chassis rail and the contact point cannot creep as the load changes. Its adjustability is what lets you meet an underside that is rarely flat and almost never square to the floor.
