The lowered height is the number that catches people out. At 54.5" (1,382 mm) closed, this stand does not fit under a vehicle at working height on the floor; it is designed for a car already raised on a lift. If you want a stand for a jacked-up car on a driveway, this is the wrong tool and we would rather tell you now.
Two responsibilities stay with you, and no product page can take them on. The floor must be sound, level concrete — a screw stand concentrates its whole load into a small base, and a base that sinks or slides is a base that fails. And the lift the vehicle is on remains the primary support: the stand is there to stabilise and to take the load shift, not to replace the lift's own safety locks.
Why the height range is the specification that matters
Adjustment runs from 54.5" to 80.5" — 1,382 mm to 2,045 mm — and the range is deliberately generous because a lifted vehicle is never at a convenient height. It is at whatever height suits the job being done above it. A stand with a narrow range forces you to move the vehicle to suit the stand, which on a two-post lift means interrupting the work and re-checking the lift points.
Height is set by a hardened ACME screw driven by a quick-adjust spin handle running on a thrust bearing. The thread form is the point: an ACME thread is square-shouldered and coarse, so it carries load down its flanks rather than trying to wedge itself apart, and it does not back off under vibration the way a fine vee thread can. The thrust bearing is what makes the handle turn easily with weight already on the pad — without it, fine adjustment under load is a two-handed fight.
The pad, and what it protects
The top carries a thick rubber adjustable pad. It does two jobs at once. It spreads the contact so the stand is not pressing a steel point into a gearbox casing, a sump rail or an exhaust flange, and it grips, so the component does not creep across a bare metal top as its balance shifts. The pad's adjustability lets you match the contact angle to whatever you are actually supporting, which matters when the underside of a car offers very few flat, square surfaces.
