Air-evac: the oil leaves under pressure, so nobody carries the drum

The tedious part of an oil change is not draining the sump. It is what happens when the catch tank is full. A plain gravity drain has to be wheeled to the bulk tank and tipped, or pumped out with a separate transfer pump — which is the point in the day where twenty gallons of hot used oil gets spilled down the side of a bulk tank. The Ranger RD-20SE takes the other route. Connect shop air, and the tank pressurises and pushes its own contents out through the supplied 10′ hose into whatever you are emptying it into. The tank never leaves the ground and nobody lifts anything.

Around that, it is a straightforward 20 gallon mobile drain built for a bay that does several changes a day: a 16″ (406 mm) funnel, a telescoping column that adjusts from 52″ to 83″, and a translucent sight tube down the side so you can see the level without opening anything.

Will It Fit?

Two measurements and one service connection decide whether this drain works in your bay.

  • Working height. The column adjusts from 52″ (1,321 mm) to 83″ (2,108 mm). That top figure is the one to check: it is what lets the funnel reach a sump on a vehicle held up on a two-post lift rather than one sitting on the floor. Measure from your shop floor to the underside of the sump at the height you actually work at, and confirm it falls inside that range.
  • Funnel diameter. 16″ (406 mm) of catch area. It matters more than it sounds on transverse engines and on anything with a shield, where the stream does not fall straight down from the plug.
  • Air supply. The evacuation function needs a shop air line at the drain. Somewhere within hose reach of the bay is enough — it does not need a dedicated drop — but a bay with no compressed air can only use this as a gravity drain, which throws away the feature you bought it for.
  • Floor and route. It rolls on 3″ ball-bearing casters with locks. They want a hard, flat floor; think about the route to your bulk tank as well as the parking spot, including any threshold or drain channel on the way.

Checking your working height, your air supply and the route is the buyer's responsibility. If you tell us the lift you run and the height you work at, we will check the range against it before you order.

Two safety features that are really one idea

Pressurising a tank of used oil is safe when the pressure is bounded and dangerous when it is not, so the RD-20SE bounds it twice. The air regulator is tamper-proof: it is set at the factory and it is not adjustable by whoever happens to be using the drain that afternoon. Behind it sits a preset safety pressure valve that relieves if the setting is ever exceeded.

Read together, those two decisions say something about who the machine was designed for. A regulator that anyone can turn up is the single most likely route to an incident in a busy shop, because the person who turns it up to speed up an evacuation is never the person who reads the manual. Removing the adjustment removes the temptation. It is a small design choice with a large consequence, and it is the reason this drain suits a shop with several technicians rather than only a careful owner-operator.

Built for the environment it lives in

The body is steel, formed and finished to resist the dents, rust and corrosion that a mobile drain collects simply by existing in a workshop — it gets nudged by tyres, parked against walls and splashed with everything. The telescoping tube is specified as non-corrosive, which is the right place to spend the money: a seized height adjustment turns an adjustable drain into a fixed one.

The drain tube uses a quick-release "lift-lock" arrangement, so the funnel assembly comes off without tools when you want the unit to fit under something low or into a corner for storage. There is a pull handle on top and a deliberately wide base — the wide base is what stops a tall, top-heavy column tipping when it is rolled over a joint in the floor with a full funnel in the air.

Perfect For

  • Quick-lube and fast-fit bays doing volume, where the time saved is in the emptying rather than the draining.
  • General repair shops running two-post lifts — the 83″ reach is what makes a raised vehicle workable without a step.
  • Fleet and municipal workshops where several people share the equipment and a non-adjustable regulator is a safety policy rather than a preference.
  • Serious home and club workshops with compressed air and a bulk waste tank.

What's in the Box

The feature list supplied with this product confirms two inclusions, and we will not add to it from imagination: the rugged funnel, and a 10′ translucent evacuation hose with a drip-less quick coupler. The hose being translucent is genuinely useful — you can see the oil moving and see when it stops, which is how you know the tank is empty without guessing. Not listed, and therefore not assumed: an air line, fittings for your particular coupler standard, or any waste storage. Ask us if you need the full packing list before ordering.

Certification, stated honestly

The data we hold for the RD-20SE claims no third-party approval or independent listing, and we are not going to suggest one by implication. This is worth taking seriously on a pressurised vessel in particular: if your insurer, your local fire or environmental authority, or a fleet contract requires pressure equipment to carry a specific recognised approval or a periodic inspection, treat that as unresolved and verify it against the manufacturer's documentation before you commit. Ask us and we will put the question to Ranger in writing. Separately, used oil is a regulated waste in most jurisdictions — how you store and dispose of what this drain collects is governed by your local rules, not by the equipment.

Shipping and delivery

The cost to ship is worked out live at checkout for your address, so what you see is the real figure rather than an estimate. An item of this size usually travels by freight carrier, and freight is a kerbside service — you must be able to take it off the truck, or you can arrange to collect from the carrier's local terminal instead, which is often easier for a shop without a dock. Delivery to a residential address adds a residential fee, applied once per brand on an order rather than per item. Inspect the crate before signing and note any damage on the delivery paperwork at the time; once you have signed clean, a claim becomes very difficult to pursue. We deliver within the contiguous United States.

Warranty

Ranger publishes a single warranty document covering its product line and we hold a copy for this model. There is no term printed here because the data on file does not state one, and putting an invented figure on a product page is worse than leaving it blank — ask us and we will send the current document over before you order. If the unit will not hold pressure or the regulator misbehaves, disconnect the air, contact us, and do not dismantle the regulator or the relief valve first. On a pressure component, opening it is usually the end of a claim as well as a genuinely bad idea.
