An exhaust check means running an engine indoors on purpose. The EV-1 exists so that the fumes leave the building instead of the technician. The number that separates it from a shop fan and a length of ducting is the one most equipment of this type never publishes: an A-weighted surface noise rating of 73 dB(A). Ventilation only protects people if it is actually switched on, and a blower that makes conversation impossible in the bay is a blower that gets left in the corner. The specification that decides whether it works in your building is the hose: 40 ft (12 m) long and 5 in (12.7 cm) in diameter. Measure the real route, not the straight line — from where a vehicle's tailpipe sits in the bay you actually use, around the obstacles, to the opening the fumes will leave by. Forty feet is generous for a single bay and tight if the only outside door is at the far end of a three-bay shop. Diameter matters too: a 5 in hose wants a 5 in path, so if you are planning to pass it through a wall port or a cracked door, check the opening.

Power is straightforward. The motor runs on 110 VAC and the manufacturer specifies a minimum 6 Amp supply, so a standard shop circuit will do — but it should be a circuit with headroom, not the one already carrying a compressor. Working temperature is rated 23° to 120°F (-5° to 49°C), which is worth checking against an unheated winter bay. Confirming the power supply, the hose route and the exit point is the buyer's responsibility; these are measurements only someone standing in the building can take, and we would rather answer the question before the order than after.

Why Airflow Volume Is the Specification That Counts

Ventilation is a volume problem, not a pressure problem. What protects a technician is how much air actually moves per minute, which is why the EV-1 is specified at 270 CFM through the full hose rather than by motor size alone. A 0.75 HP motor driving that airflow is a sensible pairing: enough to sustain the flow along 40 ft of 5 in hose, small enough to run on an ordinary circuit and to stay within that 73 dB(A) rating.

The manufacturer describes the design as high-flow positive pressure ventilation. In practice the value of a portable system is that it goes where the work is: an exhaust check on the third car of the morning does not have to happen in the one bay with a fixed extraction drop, and a shop that grows or rearranges its bays does not have to re-engineer ducting to keep up.

Serviceable, Not Sealed

The unit is protected by two 16 Amp time-delayed fuses measuring 0.39 in x 1.49 in (10 mm x 38 mm) — an ordinary industrial cartridge size, not a proprietary part. Time-delayed is the right choice here: a blower motor draws a surge at start-up, and a fast fuse would nuisance-blow every morning. Keep a pair on the shelf; that is the failure a shop can fix in a minute rather than a service call.

Shipping and Delivery

This system ships by freight within the lower 48 states. Freight is quoted live at checkout against your delivery address, so the figure you see is the real one rather than an estimate. You must be able to receive and unload the shipment, or arrange to collect it from the carrier's terminal — the driver is not obliged to bring it inside or to help. Residential delivery is available and carries a residential fee. Inspect the shipment before you sign for it and note any damage or shortage on the delivery receipt at the time of delivery. A receipt signed clean is very hard to argue with afterwards, and a hose is easy to crush in transit.
