Lanair XT75: the waste oil heater that brings its own air compressor

Every waste oil burner needs compressed air to atomise the fuel, and on the larger XT cabinets that means running a permanent air line from your shop compressor to the heater and keeping that compressor healthy for as long as you want heat. The XT75 does not ask for any of that. It has an onboard air compressor, so the appliance is self-contained.

Read that alongside the rest of the specification and a pattern appears. It runs on 115 V at 8 amps — an ordinary wall circuit, not the heavier dedicated feed the bigger cabinets want. It stands on the floor rather than hanging from your roof structure, on a footprint of 21" by 26". And it arrives preassembled. Of everything in Lanair's range, this is the unit you can realistically install in a building that was never designed around it.

Vertical on purpose

The XT75 is 75" tall and occupies about the floor area of a filing cabinet. That shape is the whole idea: a small shop does not have spare wall, but it almost always has a spare corner, and a tall narrow appliance takes the corner without eating a work zone. Lanair describes the design as customer-inspired, which reads like marketing until you have tried to find room for a hanging heater in a two-bay building with a mezzanine and a compressor already in the way.

Going vertical also puts the controls and the service points at standing height. You are not on a ladder to read a draft gauge or clean a strainer, which in practice is the difference between maintenance that happens and maintenance that gets postponed.

Will It Fit?

• Floor space: 21" wide by 26" deep. Add access room at the front for servicing — the footprint is the machine, not the working envelope.
• Height: 75". Check it against a low ceiling, a mezzanine edge or a roller-door track before you commit, and remember the flue leaves the top.
• Electrical: 115 V, 8 amps. That is a standard circuit, which is the single biggest reason this unit ends up in buildings the bigger cabinets cannot go into.
• Compressed air: none required externally. The compressor is on board.
• Flue: 6" Class A pipe, exiting from the top. The chimney kit supplied covers a roof or wall exit and is sized for 14-16 eaves.
• Floor: level and solid. It is floor-mounted, so this is a much simpler question than the structural check a suspended heater demands — but the weight is on the specification table below and worth reading before you slide it into position.

Confirming clearances against your own building is the buyer's responsibility. The height is the one people miss.

The metering pump delivers fuel at a controlled rate rather than relying on gravity or line pressure, which is what makes a consistent flame possible on a fuel whose viscosity changes with what was drained into the tank last week.

The draft gauge is the diagnostic you get for free. Draft is what a waste oil appliance lives or dies by, and a gauge on the machine means you can see a blocked flue or a failing chimney as a number instead of discovering it as a burner that keeps shutting down.

The cleanable in-tank strainer is the acknowledgement that used oil carries debris. Cleanable, not replaceable — you rinse it and put it back rather than ordering a part every service.

And it is preassembled, which for a small shop without an in-house installer is a genuine cost item, not a convenience note.

Rated at 75,000 BTU heating up to 1,700 sq. ft., at a fuel input of 0.54 GPH. It burns #1 and #2 fuel oil (diesel), used crankcase oil in conventional or synthetic form, and used automatic transmission fluid.

The output figure is the one to be honest with yourself about. 1,700 sq. ft. is a small shop, a two-bay building or a large home workshop — it is not a warehouse, and no amount of louvre adjustment will make it one. If your building is closer to 3,500 sq. ft., look at the larger XT cabinets instead, accepting that they will want a shop air line and a heavier circuit.

Keep the tank clean. Gasoline, solvent, antifreeze, brake fluid and paint waste do not belong in a waste oil heater, and contaminated fuel is the most common cause of a burner that will not run — it is also not a warranty fault.
