Most jack stand listings tell you the tonnage and stop. The number that actually decides whether a stand is usable in your garage is the lowered height, and Ranger publishes it: the RJS-3T sits at 11.5" (292 mm) fully collapsed and ratchets up to 17" (431 mm). That lower figure is the one to check first, because a stand that will not go under the car at the height your floor jack can reach is a stand you cannot use, whatever it is rated to hold.
They are supplied as a set of two, welded steel, with a ratchet bar and a cast base. This is straightforward support equipment for brake work, suspension jobs and general undercarriage access — the sort of thing that lives under the bench and gets used every week.
The two heights, and how to check them against your car
Take a measurement from the floor to the vehicle’s designated support point with the car sitting on its wheels. If that figure is comfortably above 11.5", the stand goes underneath once the jack has lifted the car clear. If it is not, no amount of capacity helps — you need a lower stand or a different lifting point.
At the top of its travel the stand holds 17" (431 mm). That is the working height you actually get, and it is what determines whether you can get a creeper and your shoulders underneath. Between the two figures the ratchet bar gives you a range of fixed, positive positions rather than a smooth adjustment, which is the correct design for something holding a car up: it engages on a tooth, not on friction.
Holding capacity, quoted exactly as the specification quotes it
The product is titled as a 3-ton stand. The manufacturer’s specification table lists Holding Capacity as 6,000 lbs. (2,721 kg). Those are the two figures in the data and we are repeating both of them as they appear.
What the specification does not say is whether that figure applies to each stand or to the pair. We are not going to resolve that by assumption, because guessing the wrong way on a load rating is precisely the kind of error that gets somebody hurt. Before you work under a load anywhere near that limit, contact us and we will confirm the rating basis with the manufacturer in writing. For the everyday case — a passenger car, a light truck, a set of wheels off — the question does not arise, and that is the work these stands are bought for.
Whatever the rating basis turns out to be, the usual discipline applies: a jack is a lifting device and a stand is a holding device. Lift with the jack, transfer the load onto the stands, then shake the car before any part of you goes underneath. Never rely on the jack alone, and never leave a car on stands for a job you have walked away from.
The base, and the floor it sits on
Each stand has a base measuring 7" x 7.5" (178 mm x 190 mm). That footprint is what spreads the load into the floor and what resists tipping if the car is nudged sideways during a stubborn bolt. Two practical consequences follow from a published base size.
First, the surface under it matters more than the stand does. A base of that size concentrates a substantial load into a small patch, which is fine on sound, level concrete and not fine on asphalt on a warm day, on pavers, on gravel or on a sloping driveway. Asphalt in particular will let a loaded base sink without any warning at all. Checking that your floor is appropriate is the owner’s responsibility, and it is the single most common cause of a stand going over.
Second, the base wants to be square under the support point, not offset from it. An angled load on a small footprint is the condition that turns a stable stand into an unstable one.
Welded steel, and what that buys
The stands are fabricated from welded steel with a coated finish. For a shop tool the finish is not cosmetic: a stand lives on a damp floor, gets kicked, gets oil spilled on it, and spends years in a corner. A coated weld structure resists the surface corrosion that would otherwise creep into the ratchet teeth, and the ratchet teeth are the part where corrosion actually matters — a fouled or rusted tooth is one that does not engage cleanly.
Inspect them like any other load-bearing tool. Look at the welds around the base and the column, check that the ratchet pawl drops fully into a tooth and holds when you push down on the saddle, and take out of service any stand with a cracked weld, a bent column or a ratchet that skips. None of that is specific to this model; all of it is specific to equipment that holds a car above a person.

Certification, stated plainly
This is the section where a lot of jack stand listings reach for an acronym. We are not going to, because the manufacturer data we hold for the RJS-3T does not contain a third-party laboratory listing or an independent test approval, and printing one that we cannot evidence would be worse than saying nothing.
That absence is worth taking seriously on load-bearing equipment specifically. Some insurers, some fleet operators, some commercial workshops and some local codes require vehicle support equipment to carry an independent listing, and a manufacturer’s own rating is not the same document.
