Description

Package 4 is the wall-vent build. That is the whole reason to choose it over the otherwise identical roof-vent package: the flue leaves through a wall rather than through the roof deck. If you lease your building, if the roof is under a warranty you would rather not void, or if the heater is going where a roof penetration would land badly, that decision is made for you before you ever compare heat output.

The heater itself is the Lanair XTD300, the largest in the XTD line — a ceiling-hung unit that burns the used oil your shop already pays to have taken away, rated at 300,000 BTUH and specified for spaces up to 10,000 square feet.

Two bills, one appliance

A waste oil heater is unusual in that it attacks two costs at once. The fuel is oil you have already bought once and are currently paying a hauler to remove, so every hour the burner runs takes money off the disposal invoice as well as off the gas meter. For a shop generating drain oil at any volume, that arithmetic is the entire business case, and it improves every time either fuel prices or disposal rates go up.

What it will burn

The specification sheet is broad, and the breadth is the point. The XTD300 takes used crankcase oil up to 50 wt, conventional or synthetic; used automatic transmission fluid, including synthetic ATF; and #1 and #2 fuel oil, which is to say diesel. A shop that runs conventional oil changes, transmission services and a diesel fleet feeds this heater from three streams rather than one, which matters in a mild winter when drain oil alone might not keep the tank ahead of the burner.

Ducted heat, not just a hot corner

The XTD series is the ductable one. Its specification carries a ductable option, so heat can be carried to where people work instead of pooling at one end of the building and being pushed around by hope and a pedestal fan. In a long shop, or one with a paint area or parts room that never warms up, that is the difference between a heater that solves the problem and one that just adds to the noise near the compressor.

The chimney can leave from the top or the left side of the cabinet, which gives the installer a second degree of freedom when the wall penetration point is already fixed by a joist or a door.

Built to be cleaned, because it will need cleaning

Every waste oil heater accumulates ash. What separates a unit that gets serviced from one that quietly loses efficiency is how unpleasant the cleanout is, and Lanair has aimed most of this model’s improvements at exactly that. The chamber door is hinged, so it swings open rather than having to be unbolted and held. A large side-access panel opens the collector box for the same reason. The burner is designed to be removed easily.

Three more changes are about running it rather than cleaning it: a non-continuous spark transformer, an hour meter so service intervals are measured rather than guessed, and a prime switch. The combustion chamber underneath all of this is 10 gauge CRS — heavy steel, in the part of the appliance that has the hardest life.

Will it fit, and will your building carry it?

Start with the ceiling, not the floor. The specification table gives a hanging weight of 696 lbs. That load has to go into structure that can take it, hung at a height that leaves service access to the chamber door and the side panel — a heater installed where nobody can reach the collector box is a heater that does not get cleaned. Confirm the structural capacity with someone qualified before you order; that is the buyer’s responsibility and it is not a judgement we can make from a web page.

The cabinet measures 36" x 45.5" x 54" (height x width x depth). Power is 120 V at 20 Amps, and the burner needs compressed air at 2 CFM, 15-18 PSI — a small demand, but a continuous one, so it has to come from a compressor that is not already at its limit. Fuel input is 2.14 gallons per hour at full fire, which is the figure to size your tank and your oil generation against.

Perfect For

  • Leased buildings and any premises where a roof penetration is not an option you want to take.
  • Large shops and workshops up to the rated 10,000 square feet.
  • Businesses paying to have waste oil removed — the disposal saving is half the return.
  • Long or divided buildings where the ductable option lets the heat reach the far end.

What the package includes

Beyond the heater, Package 4 supplies the venting kit — the current product copy lists a chimney cap, Class A chimney pipes, flashing, storm collars and the associated fittings.

Here we have to be straight with you about our own data. This package is labelled as the wall-mount vent, yet the kit description carries roof flashing and storm collars, which are roof-penetration components. One of those two statements is describing something other than what will arrive on your pallet. Before you order, tell us your intended vent route and we will confirm the exact kit contents with Lanair in writing. We would rather have that conversation now than have you open a crate with the wrong flashing in it.

Two further points our data does not support, so we are not making them: our older listing text for this package referred to a bulk waste oil storage tank of a stated size, and nothing in the manufacturer’s specification for the heater mentions a tank at all. Ask us what the current package contains rather than relying on that. And no line in this data confirms whether a thermostat is supplied.

Certification and compliance

Our product data for this package does not record a safety listing from an independent testing laboratory, and we are not going to imply one. This matters more with a fuel-burning, ceiling-hung appliance than with most equipment we sell, because installation almost always involves a mechanical permit and an inspection. Ask us before you buy and we will get the manufacturer’s listing and compliance documentation in writing so you can hand it to your inspector, and check your local rules on waste oil burning while you are at it — they vary by jurisdiction.

Delivery and inspection

This ships as freight within the contiguous United States (the lower 48 states). You will need a way to take a heavy crated appliance off the truck, or you can arrange to collect it from the freight terminal; residential delivery is possible but carries a residential fee, and a shop or commercial address is almost always the easier option.

Inspect the shipment before you sign. Check the cabinet panels, the burner housing and the chimney kit cartons for crush damage, and note anything you find on the bill of lading in front of the driver. A clean signature closes the door on a carrier claim.

Warranty

Warranty is handled through our warranty claims page. With a burner, one rule matters above the rest: do not strip the unit down before the claim is opened. Photograph the fault, keep the packaging if you suspect transit damage, and contact us first — and keep your service and cleaning records, because on fuel-burning equipment a maintenance history is often the difference between a claim that is paid and one that is argued.
