Description

Package 3 vents through the roof. Mechanically it is the same Lanair XTD300 as the wall-vent package on our site; what differs is the flue kit in the crate and, consequently, what your installer does on day one. A vertical run through the roof deck generally gives the most reliable natural draft and keeps the flue out of the way of doors, walkways and anything parked alongside the building — which is why it remains the default choice where the roof is yours to penetrate.

Underneath the venting decision sits a 300,000 BTUH ceiling-hung heater rated for areas up to 10,000 square feet, burning oil your shop currently pays somebody to take away.

The economics before the engineering

Most heating equipment is judged on efficiency. This one is judged on arbitrage. Drain oil is a waste stream with a removal cost attached; run it through a burner and it becomes heat you would otherwise buy from a utility. The saving is therefore the fuel you no longer purchase plus the disposal you no longer pay for, and both halves grow whenever energy or hauling rates rise. Against that, a waste oil heater asks for something in return: attention. It is an appliance you maintain rather than one you install and forget.

Which oils, and why the list matters in February

Approved fuels run to used crankcase oil up to 50 wt, conventional or synthetic; used automatic transmission fluid and synthetic ATF; and #1 and #2 fuel oil, meaning diesel. Read that list as a supply-security question rather than a compatibility one. A single-service shop can run short of drain oil in a hard cold snap, exactly when the burner is working hardest. Being able to top the tank with diesel, or to bring transmission fluid into the same tank, is what keeps the building warm when your own oil generation cannot keep pace.

Serviceability, in detail

The parts of this heater that Lanair has revised are almost all about the hour you spend cleaning it. The combustion chamber door is hinged rather than bolted, so it opens with the panel supported instead of balanced. The collector box is reached through a large side-access panel. The burner is built to come out easily.

Operationally there is an hour meter, which turns service intervals into a measured number rather than a memory; a prime switch; and a non-continuous spark transformer, which sparks to establish the flame rather than running constantly. The combustion chamber itself is 10 gauge CRS, chosen for the component that endures the most thermal cycling in the machine.

Planning the installation

The single figure to resolve first is the hanging weight: 696 lbs, carried by your building’s structure, not by the floor. Get that assessed by someone qualified before the heater arrives, and choose the mounting height with cleaning in mind — the hinged door and the side panel both have to be reachable, or the maintenance that makes this appliance worthwhile quietly stops happening.

The cabinet is 36" x 45.5" x 54" (height x width x depth). The flue is 8" Class A pipe, and the chimney can exit the top or the left side of the cabinet, which usually decides where between the joists the unit hangs. Electrical supply is 120 V at 20 Amps. The burner also needs compressed air at 2 CFM and 15-18 PSI, continuously while firing, so check that your compressor has that spare rather than assuming it. At full fire the unit consumes 2.14 gallons per hour, and that is the number to hold against both your tank size and your monthly oil generation.

Confirming structural capacity, clearances, the vent route and local approval is the buyer’s responsibility. We will help with the specification; we cannot inspect your building.

Perfect For

  • Owner-occupied shops where a roof penetration is straightforward to authorise and flash properly.
  • Buildings with obstructed walls — parking, walkways or neighbouring structures that rule out a side vent.
  • High-volume oil change and fleet operations generating enough drain oil to feed a 2.14 gallons per hour burner.
  • Workshops up to 10,000 square feet that want the option to duct heat rather than rely on a single throw.

What the package includes

Package 3 pairs the heater with a complete roof-vent chimney kit. The current product copy names a chimney cap, Class A chimney pipes, roof flashing, a storm collar and the remaining components needed to complete the installation.

What our data does not do is give you a counted parts list for this package, and a chimney kit is bought against a specific roof pitch and eave height. Tell us your roof pitch and the height of the run before you order and we will confirm the exact contents with Lanair, rather than have you discover a missing length of pipe with the installer already on site. One further correction while we are here: an older version of this listing referred to a bulk waste oil storage tank of a stated size. No tank appears anywhere in the manufacturer’s specification for this heater, so do not assume one is included — ask us.

Certification and compliance

Our data for this package records no listing by an independent testing laboratory, and we will not suggest one. For an oil-fired, ceiling-suspended appliance that is a live question rather than paperwork: installation typically needs a mechanical permit, and inspectors ask for listing documentation. Contact us before purchase and we will obtain what the manufacturer holds. Rules on burning used oil also vary between jurisdictions, so confirm yours locally.

Delivery and inspection

Freight shipment, contiguous United States. You will need equipment or hands to unload a heavy crated appliance, or you can take terminal pickup instead; a residential address is possible but attracts a residential fee, and a commercial delivery point is usually simpler for something this size.

Before signing, walk the pallet. Look at the cabinet, the burner assembly and every chimney carton, and write any damage on the bill of lading while the driver is still there. Damage noted at delivery stays claimable; damage found the next morning generally does not.

Warranty

Warranty claims are handled through our warranty claims page. Do not disassemble the heater before the claim is open — photograph the fault and call us first. Keep your cleaning and service records too: with fuel-burning equipment, a documented maintenance history is frequently what decides a warranty conversation.
