It grips the chassis, not the tyres — which is why it moves a car that has none

Almost every other way of shifting a dead car in a workshop depends on the car still having wheels. Skates go under the tyres, a tow strap needs something to roll, and a push bar needs a drivetrain that will at least freewheel. The Ranger RCD-2V works from the other end of the problem: pinch-weld clamps and adjustable saddles take hold of the vehicle's own frame rails, so the load path never touches a wheel at all. A stripped shell on a rotisserie schedule, a car with its suspension in a parts bin, a collision write-off that arrived on a flatbed with two corners missing — all of them become rolling stock.

Rated at 4,400 lbs (1,996 kg) and running on 4.5″ (114 mm) nylon swivel casters, it is aimed at collision centres, restoration shops and any bay where floor space is the scarce resource rather than lifting capacity.

Will It Fit?

This is a fitment purchase more than a capacity purchase, and the number that decides it is the width adjustment.

• Frame width. The dolly adjusts from 40.75″ to 59″ across. Measure the distance between the pinch welds or frame rails on the vehicles you actually work on, at the point you intend to clamp — not the vehicle's overall track, which is a much larger number and will mislead you.
• Height under the sill. The specification table for this model lists an overall height of 10″ (254 mm). The description supplied with the product describes an adjustable height range of 10″ to 13.5″ instead. Those two statements are not the same claim, we have not tried to reconcile them, and if the clearance under your vehicles is tight this is the figure to confirm with us before you order rather than after.
• Floor. Nylon casters want a smooth, hard, level shop floor. A drain channel, an expansion joint with a lip, or a patched slab will stop a loaded dolly dead — and stopping a loaded dolly dead is how a vehicle gets shoved off its clamps.
• Turning room. Full swivel means the vehicle can be crabbed sideways, but it still needs somewhere to go. Sketch the move before you make it.

Checking the clamping points, the clearance and the floor is the buyer's responsibility, and it is worth ten minutes with a tape measure. If you send us the vehicles you need to move, we will look at the numbers with you.

What full swivel actually buys you

The casters turn through 360 degrees, and the difference that makes is not really about steering. A car on fixed castors has to be driven — it goes where its geometry allows, which means a three-point turn in a space that does not have room for one. A car on full-swivel castors can be translated: pushed sideways off the wall, walked diagonally across a bay, rotated on its own centre to face the other way. In a shop where cars are parked nose-to-tail, that is the difference between moving one vehicle and moving four to get at it.

Each caster runs on precision ball bearings so it keeps rolling under load rather than scrubbing, and each one locks. The lock matters more than it sounds: a vehicle that will sit still under a spray gun, under a frame measuring system, or overnight in a bay on a slightly uneven floor is a vehicle that is not drifting into the one beside it.

Built around the load path

The frame is steel, reinforced at the stress points and welded rather than bolted where the load concentrates. That matters for a specific reason: this is a clamped connection, not a resting one, so the frame carries a twisting load whenever the vehicle is pushed rather than a simple downward one. Distortion in a chassis dolly does not announce itself — it shows up as a clamp that no longer sits square, which is the moment the grip is lost.

The finish is specified to resist corrosion, oil and the chemicals a busy shop floor collects. On a piece of equipment that spends its life on the ground under solvent, that is a service-life feature rather than a cosmetic one.

There is nothing hydraulic, pneumatic or electrical in the design. No fluid to leak, no air line to trip over, no motor to fail, and maintenance that amounts to checking the caster bearings, the locks and the frame fasteners occasionally and keeping the wheels clear of debris.

• Restoration workshops — a bare shell has no other sensible way to be moved, and a shell is exactly what you cannot afford to drag.

• Storage and dealer prep, where the constraint is packing more cars into the same floor, and a non-runner in the wrong place blocks everything behind it.

Shipping and delivery

Freight is quoted live at checkout for your delivery address, so you see the real number before you buy. Deliveries of this kind arrive on a freight carrier and are kerbside: you need to be able to take the shipment off the truck, or you can arrange collection from the carrier's local terminal instead — often the easier route for a shop without a dock. A delivery to a residential address carries an additional residential fee, applied once per brand on an order rather than per item. Check the shipment over before you sign, and write anything you find onto the delivery paperwork on the spot; once a clean receipt is signed, a damage claim becomes very hard to run. Delivery is within the contiguous United States.

If something fails, photograph it in place and contact us before you cut, weld or straighten anything. Repairing a structural part yourself is normally enough on its own to end a claim.
