TOPDON Tornado90000: a charger that can hold a module through a flash

The feature that separates a professional charger from an expensive consumer one is not how fast it fills a battery. It is SUPPLY mode. In SUPPLY the Tornado90000 stops behaving like a charger at all and becomes a stable DC power source, holding system voltage steady while the vehicle's own battery is effectively taken out of the equation.

That matters because of one job in particular: module programming. A control unit being flashed will draw current unevenly for a long time with the engine off, and if system voltage sags mid-write the result is not a failed procedure but a bricked module and a bill nobody wants to have a conversation about. A power supply that will not let the voltage move is inexpensive insurance against a very expensive failure.

SUPPLY mode, and why it belongs in a programming bay

Vehicle manufacturers publish minimum voltage conditions for programming procedures precisely because the failure is expensive and irreversible. A standard charger is the wrong tool for that job even when it is a good charger, because it is designed to respond to a battery's state rather than to hold a line regardless of it. SUPPLY mode inverts that behaviour.

TOPDON also describes this as an ECU programming voltage stabiliser able to match a range of manufacturer systems. Read that as a capability rather than an approval, and if a particular manufacturer's programming procedure names required equipment or a specific voltage window, check that requirement against the adjustable output before you rely on it. We will confirm the details with TOPDON if you tell us the procedure you need to support.

Six modes, and output you can dial in

The charger offers six programmable modes covering supply, normal charging, cold-weather charging, a boost setting, a recovery setting and a mode for absorbed glass mat batteries. On top of the modes, both current and voltage are editable rather than fixed, which is the part experienced users appreciate and beginners often overlook.

In the lower voltage band the adjustment runs up to 15.8V and TOPDON rates the corresponding output at up to 90 amps. In the higher band the adjustment runs up to 31.6V, with a lower maximum current. Being able to set a deliberate voltage matters for the same reason SUPPLY mode does: some procedures and some battery chemistries want a specific figure held rather than an algorithm's opinion of what is best.

12V and 24V, and the batteries it covers

The Tornado90000 handles both 12V and 24V lead-acid systems, which is what puts it in a commercial bay rather than a home garage. Covered chemistries include absorbed glass mat, wet, gel, maintenance-free, calcium and enhanced flooded batteries, so the same unit deals with a modern start-stop car and an older truck without a second charger on the shelf.

If you run a mixed fleet, that dual-voltage capability is most of the value. Two chargers is not just twice the money, it is twice the cable clutter and one more thing to be on the wrong side of the shop when you need it.

Nine-step charging and the protections behind it

Charging runs as a nine-step sequence rather than a single sustained current, with automatic charging and disconnection at the end of the cycle so the battery is not left being pushed after it is full. Protection covers reverse polarity, reverse charging, short circuits, overheating and over-voltage.

Those protections are worth reading as what they are: the failures that actually happen in a busy shop, usually at the end of a long day, usually to somebody experienced enough to be quick about connecting clamps. A charger that refuses to do anything harmful when the leads go on backwards has paid for a portion of itself the first time it happens.

Two temperature sensors, one inside and one out

The unit monitors its own internal temperature and also ships with an external sensing probe for the battery or device being charged. The second one is the useful one. Battery temperature during charging is a real safety and longevity concern, particularly on a deeply discharged battery being brought back, and a charger that can see the battery's temperature rather than only its own can react to a problem that has nothing to do with the charger.

Siting and setup

Plan where this lives before it arrives. The unit is fan cooled and carries an IP20 rating, which is an indoor, dry-location rating and no protection against water ingress. Do not site it where it can be rained on, hosed, or splashed during a wash-down, and leave clearance around the fan so it is not drawing air off a wall or through a rag.

Check the AC input band shown on the specification table against your supply before ordering, since this is a unit built for more than one mains standard. The AC lead and the battery leads have fixed lengths that are given in that table too, so measure the distance from the outlet you intend to use to where the vehicle actually parks. A charger that will not reach is a charger nobody uses.

Perfect For

  • Shops doing module programming, where a stable supply is a procedural requirement rather than a nicety.
  • Commercial and mixed fleets running both 12V and 24V equipment.
  • Dealers and body shops where vehicles sit for days with modules awake and batteries draining.
  • Anyone recovering deeply discharged batteries and wanting temperature monitoring while it happens.

What's in the Box

From the manufacturer's own data: the charger, an AC lead, positive and negative battery leads, and the external temperature sensing probe. Lead lengths and gauges appear on the specification table. Nothing else is itemised, so if you are expecting a case, a wall bracket or spare clamps, ask us to confirm before ordering rather than assuming.

Certification, and what to check on a mains-powered tool

The data supplied with this charger does not claim a third-party safety listing, and we do not print listings a product has not claimed. This one deserves a straight word rather than a shrug, though, because unlike a battery-powered tablet this device plugs into your building's supply and clamps onto a lead-acid battery. If your insurer, your landlord or a workplace safety policy requires mains-powered shop equipment to hold a recognised safety approval, get the requirement in writing and send it to us before you order. We will ask TOPDON for the compliance documentation that applies to this model rather than guessing at it here, and if it does not meet what you have been asked for, we would rather tell you now.

Shipping and delivery

Shipping is to the lower 48 states and the cost is quoted live at checkout. This is a heavier parcel than a hand tool and the clamps and leads give it awkward internal weight, so give the carton a proper look before the driver goes. Corner crushing or a rattle is worth writing on the delivery paperwork before you sign. Keep the packaging until you have run the charger on a battery and confirmed the display, the fan and the probe all behave.

Warranty

Warranty runs through the process set out on our warranty claims page. Two things protect a claim on a charger specifically. Do not open the case: a mains-powered unit that has been apart is outside the terms and is genuinely dangerous to probe. And do not modify or extend the leads, because re-terminated clamps or a lengthened AC lead change the electrical characteristics of the product and will be treated as a modification rather than a fault. Note the serial number when it arrives and start any claim with us.
