A scope input is a BNC socket. Almost everything a technician actually wants to clip onto a vehicle — breakout leads, probes, an attenuator — terminates in 4mm connectors. This test lead is the piece that bridges the two: a male BNC at the instrument end, splitting to a pair of 4mm connectors at the working end, intended to help the Phoenix Scope read a range of signal types.
It is the least glamorous item in a scope kit and the one whose absence stops the kit being a kit. Without it you own an instrument and a box of leads that cannot reach each other.
The colour-coding is the feature, not the packaging
The two 4mm connectors are colour-coded: black is the earth wire and red is the positive pole. That is a small manufacturing decision with an outsized effect on a working day, because polarity on a scope is not like polarity on a multimeter.
Get it backwards on a meter and you read a negative number, notice immediately, and swap the leads. Get it backwards on a scope and you get a waveform — an inverted one. It has the right amplitude, the right timing and the wrong shape, and it will happily lead a technician to conclude something confident and incorrect about a coil, an injector or a sensor. An adapter that makes the earth connection unmistakable at a glance removes an entire class of quiet errors, particularly for anyone who is not on a scope every day.
The manufacturer's guidance is specific about pairing: the red positive connector is the one to run to the 6-way Breakout Leads. Following that convention consistently is what makes a trace reproducible from one session to the next, and reproducibility is most of what makes a scope trustworthy.
It works with the attenuator too
These leads can also be used with the 20:1 attenuator, which matters if you are assembling a diagnostic kit rather than buying a single item. The attenuator is what allows fuel injector and primary ignition waveform capture; this adapter is part of how it gets connected. Buying them at the same time avoids the familiar situation of owning both halves of a capability and being unable to join them until the next order arrives.
What it is, and what it is not
Be clear about the category. This is a passive test lead. It does not condition, scale, filter or protect a signal, and it does not extend what your scope is capable of measuring — it changes the shape of the connection and nothing more. If the measurement you are planning needs the signal reduced before it reaches the instrument, the adapter is not the part that does that job.
