Description
-Ranger RD-15 15-Gallon Low-Profile Portable Oil Drain
Ranger RD-15 Low-Profile Portable Oil Drain
The number that decides whether this drain is any use to you is its overall height: 8.5" (220 mm). That single dimension is the whole design brief. An upright drain has to be rolled up to a vehicle that has already been raised; the RD-15 is built to slide underneath one that has not, which is why it turns up in truck bays, RV shops and any operation where the lift is busy and the oil change is not worth waiting for.
It holds 15 gallons, which is a genuinely large tank for something that low, and it is the combination — deep capacity in a shallow body — that makes it worth choosing over either a shallow basin that fills after two jobs or a tall drain that cannot get under the vehicle in the first place.
Will It Fit?
Three measurements answer that, and all three are on this page.
Clearance. The unit stands 8.5" (220 mm) tall. Before ordering, get under the vehicles you actually service and measure to the lowest point the drain has to pass — usually a crossmember, a skid plate or an exhaust hanger rather than the sump itself, which is what catches people out. If your lowest obstruction is under that figure, the drain does not go under the vehicle and no amount of careful positioning changes it.
Capacity. 15 gallons sets how many drains you get between trips to the waste tank. For a shop running large-displacement diesels, that is the difference between emptying mid-job and finishing the bay.
Getting it into the building. The shipping carton is 41" x 22" x 10" (1,041 mm x 558 mm x 254 mm). Check that against your receiving door and any corridor between the dock and the bay.
| What to check | Figure | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Overall height | 8.5" (220 mm) | The clearance the drain needs under the lowest part of the vehicle |
| Fluid capacity | 15 gallons | How many oil changes fit between trips to the waste tank |
| Shipping carton | 41" x 22" x 10" (1,041 mm x 558 mm x 254 mm) | Receiving door, corridor and storage footprint |
| Listed shipping weight | 43 lbs. (19 kg) | Published figures differ — see the note below |
One customer-responsibility line, because it saves arguments later: the clearance measurement, the floor the drain will be wheeled across and the arrangements for storing and disposing of the collected oil are all yours to confirm. We can tell you the drain's height; only you can tell us what is under your customers' trucks.
Confirm the weight before you plan the freight
Published weight figures for this drain differ: the specification block on this page lists a shipping weight of 43 lbs. (19 kg); the descriptive copy for the model puts the unit at around 110 lbs.
The figure matters in two practical ways — whether one person can lift the empty drain onto a truck bed, and what the freight quote is calculated from. If either decides your purchase, confirm the current weight with us in writing before you order and we will get it straight from Ranger.
A wide body is a stability decision, not a styling one
The RD-15 is deliberately wide-bodied, and the reason is what happens when the tank is nearly full. Fifteen gallons of used oil is a substantial moving mass, and a narrow tank on casters will slop, shift its centre of gravity and try to tip when it is pushed or when a caster hits a floor joint. Spreading the footprint keeps the balance point low and inside the wheelbase, so the drain stays flat while you move it. Built-in baffles do the other half of that job: they break the fluid up internally so it cannot surge from one end to the other in a single wave.
The same baffles, together with the splash guards, are what keeps used oil where it belongs when the stream first hits the pan. Oil arriving from a hot engine at a height does not land politely: without guards it comes back up onto the underside of the vehicle you have just been paid to service, and onto the floor you then have to clean.
The mesh cover, and why removable matters
The body is heavy-duty steel, which for a shop-floor drain is less about strength than about surviving being knocked, kicked and reversed into in an environment permanently coated in oil. A removable steel mesh cover sits over the opening and catches debris — the sludge, the old washer, the bits of gasket — before it reaches the tank and, more importantly, before it reaches whatever you use to evacuate the tank afterwards. Particulate is what blocks pumps and disposal lines. That the mesh lifts out is the practical point: a screen you cannot remove is a screen nobody cleans, and a blocked screen turns a drain into a spill.
Moving it, and emptying it
Swivel casters and a T-shaped handle mean the drain is steered rather than shoved, which is what you want when it is full and you are threading between a lift post and a parts trolley. The T-handle gives two-handed control and a predictable pivot.
Emptying is deliberately open-ended. There is a built-in drain nozzle for gravity discharge into a waste tank, and the unit will equally take an evacuation pump if your shop is set up for vacuum transfer. Note that no pump is listed among this model's features, so if you need one, plan to supply it or ask us what pairs with it — some other drains in the Ranger range include one and this listing does not say that it does.
Perfect For
- Truck and RV service — the application Ranger names for it, and the one the low body exists for.
- Busy general shops where the lift is committed and oil changes have to happen on the floor.
- Fleet and municipal yards servicing vehicles that are too tall, too long or too heavy to put on a lift for routine work.
- Serious home garages with a lowered car and no room for an upright drain.
What's in the Box
The drain arrives complete: the wide-body tank with its built-in baffles and splash guards, the removable steel mesh cover, the built-in drain nozzle, the swivel casters and the T-shaped handle. The features list on this page describes those as parts of the unit. It does not list an evacuation pump, a hose kit or a waste container, so assume those are not included unless we confirm otherwise.
Certification, stated plainly
The data behind this listing makes no third-party approval or conformity claim for the RD-15, and we will not print one it does not make. For a passive collection vessel that is unremarkable. If your site, your insurer or your environmental permit requires equipment carrying a particular listing for waste oil handling, tell us what the requirement is before ordering and we will take it to Ranger rather than guess.
Shipping and delivery
Delivery is to the lower 48 states, priced live at checkout against your own address rather than an average. Larger items travel by freight: the carrier will call to book a window, someone has to be there to take the delivery off the truck, and terminal collection is available if you would rather bring your own transport. A residential address carries a residential fee. Inspect the shipment against the paperwork before you sign for it and write any damage on the delivery receipt then and there — a signed clean receipt is very hard to argue with afterwards. Collection from the Ranger pickup locations shown further down this page is also available.
Warranty
Ranger's written warranty covers its product line and we will send you the document that applies to this drain on request. The data behind this listing states no term, so no term is printed here; ask us and we will confirm it rather than have you rely on a number on a web page. If the unit develops a fault, do not cut, weld or dismantle it before speaking to us — a repair attempt is the most reliable way to lose a claim that would otherwise have been paid.
