It has a water pump in it, and that is the whole argument

Almost every portable cooling box on the market is a fan pointed at a bag of ice. The Coolee CL-240 has a second mode. Alongside plain ambient cooling, where the fans simply move the chilled air already sitting inside the bin, it runs a recirculating water circuit: a micro water pump, a heatsink and a heat exchanger that pull the cold out of the melt water instead of letting it pool in the bottom and go to waste. Ice melts either way. In the second mode you get paid for the melt.

That is the reason to look at the CL-240 rather than a battery fan strapped to a cooler lid, and it is the reason the grey and blue version keeps turning up in shops, on decks and in garages rather than only on camping trips. The rest of the unit is a 3-in-1 build: air cooler, insulated ice chest and Bluetooth stereo speaker in one soft-sided case.

Two modes, and when to use which

Ambient air cooling is the low-effort setting. Load ice, switch on, and the two brushless fans push the cold air out through the directional nozzles. It is simple and it uses less of the battery.

Recirculating water cooling is the setting for a hot afternoon. Add water to the ice, and the pump moves that water through the heatsink and heat exchanger continuously, so the heat being carried away is coming out of a liquid loop rather than out of still air. The manufacturer's figure for the air leaving the unit is up to 35°F below the outside temperature. The two modes are not a marketing split; they are genuinely different jobs, and knowing which is which is the difference between a unit that keeps up and one that does not.

Quiet, on purpose

The pump uses a shielded impeller, described by the manufacturer as delivering boosted efficiency at low noise levels. That sounds like a small point and it is not. A cooling device that intrudes on conversation gets turned down or switched off, and a cooler that is off is not cooling anybody. The same reasoning runs through the fan design: optimised air-balance blades are about producing airflow and pressure efficiently rather than producing it loudly. If you are running this on a deck, in a shop with people talking, or anywhere someone is trying to hear something, the acoustic side of the design is doing real work for you.

Independent 3-speed fans, not a single blower

There are two fans, and each has its own 3-speed control. Two separate air paths that can be set differently is a more useful arrangement than one large fan on a dial, because the usual situation is not symmetrical: one person wants air on them, the space wants a general breeze, or one nozzle is aimed at a chair and the other at a doorway. Air amplifiers are supplied to raise the velocity when a gentle breeze is not the point.

The cooler underneath

Strip the electronics away and what is left is a properly built soft cooler. The bin is durable polyethylene, thermally insulated, holding 14 quarts of drinks and ice. The case is high-density abrasion-resistant fabric chosen for leak-proof performance and insulation, and the lid is a zippered open-top design that seals the cold in rather than resting on top of it. A detachable shoulder strap and sturdy side handles handle the carrying, which matters once there is ice and water inside.

Power: battery first, cords in reserve

A super-polymer rechargeable 10,000mAh lithium-ion battery drives it, rated at up to 6 hours. Fans, pump and speaker all draw on that same pack, so the recirculating mode at high fan speed is not going to match the runtime of ambient mode on low, and the figure is best read as a ceiling. The box also contains a 110V cord and a 12V cord. Use them. Running on a cord where one is available keeps the charge intact for the part of the day when there is no socket, which is the part that matters.

Sound without a second device

Weather-resistant Bluetooth stereo speakers are fitted as standard and stream music, radio stations or podcasts straight from a phone. The practical case for building them in rather than carrying a separate speaker is that it is one fewer item to charge, carry and lose.

Before you order

There is nothing to install and no clearance to measure, but three things are worth confirming, and they are the buyer's to confirm rather than ours.

• An ice supply. Both cooling modes start with ice in the bin. The unit chills air; it does not create cold from nothing.
• Water for the second mode. The recirculating circuit needs water added to the ice. Ice alone gives you ambient mode only.
• Your 12V socket. A 12V cord is included, but low-voltage sockets vary between vehicles and boats. Check the connector against your socket before you build a day around it.

Printing a reassuring mark we cannot stand behind would be worse than saying this.

Shipping and delivery

Delivery is to the lower 48 states, with the shipping cost quoted live at checkout against the address you enter rather than estimated up front. A residential delivery attracts a residential fee where one applies. When it arrives, look at the carton before you sign: any damage needs to be written on the delivery paperwork at the moment of handover, because a clean signature is the carrier's proof that nothing was wrong, and reversing that later is close to impossible.
