Quincy Q12124PQ — 2 HP, 24 Gallon Single-Stage Portable Air Compressor

Check your circuit before you check anything else. The Q12124PQ plugs into ordinary 115 Volt, 1-Phase power, which is what makes it a portable machine rather than a fixed installation — and yet Quincy's own specification block asks for a 30 Amp breaker behind it. A typical garage wall receptacle is on a considerably smaller circuit than that. So for a good many buyers this compressor still involves a short conversation with an electrician, even though it arrives on wheels with a cord on the end.

That one line tells you what this machine actually is. It is not a hobby unit with a bigger tank bolted underneath. It is a cast-iron, belt-driven, oil-lubricated shop pump — the sort of hardware normally sitting on a vertical tank in the corner of a workshop — mounted instead on a horizontal 24 Gallon tank with rubber wheels and a handle, so the air can be taken to the work rather than the work carried to the air.

Will It Fit?

The compressor is 36.4" long, 16.7" wide and 22.6" high, and it weighs 148 lbs. Those figures cut both ways. The horizontal layout will slide along a wall behind a bench or under a workbench overhang where a vertical tank of similar capacity will not go, and nothing about it needs ceiling height. But 148 lbs is a two-person lift into a truck bed; the wheels and handle are for rolling it across a level floor, not for carrying it up steps.

Electrical supply is 115 Volt AC, 1-Phase, with a recommended 30 Amp breaker and no magnetic starter fitted — the specification block records that plainly. Confirming your panel can carry a dedicated 30 Amp circuit, and that the run to where the compressor will live is properly sized, is the customer's responsibility, and it is the most common reason a machine like this sits unused for a fortnight. The pump is the part you are paying for

Cast iron cylinder, cast iron valve plate, cast iron crankshaft, and an aluminium head with a purpose-designed cooling fin pattern. That combination is deliberate rather than decorative. Cast iron carries heat away slowly and holds its bore geometry through thousands of heat cycles, which is why it remains the material of choice for a pump expected to work for years; aluminium at the head does the opposite job, shedding heat quickly from the hottest part of the assembly. Quincy states a service life of up to 10,000 hours for this pump.

It is belt driven and oil lubricated, with an oil sight glass so the level check is a glance rather than a job. Belt drive lets the pump turn more slowly than the motor, which is the quiet, long-lived way to make air — the trade is a belt to inspect and a guard to remove occasionally. That guard is fully enclosed, which matters on a machine meant to be moved around a working floor with people beside it.

What it will actually run

Delivered air is 8.3 CFM at 40 PSI and 7.4 CFM at 100 PSI, with a maximum of 135 PSI. Read those two figures as a pair rather than picking the larger one: the first describes low-pressure, high-flow work such as blow guns and tyre inflation, the second describes what is left when a tool demands real pressure.

In practice 7.4 CFM at 100 PSI comfortably covers intermittent-duty tools — impact wrenches, nailers, ratchets, small die grinders — and touch-up or small-panel spraying. It does not cover continuous-duty work such as a large sander or a media blaster run flat out; those empty a 24 Gallon receiver faster than a single-stage pump refills it, and no portable on a single-phase circuit does that job well. Size the compressor to the tools you own rather than the tools you might buy.

Tank, controls and the parts used daily

The receiver is a 24 Gallon ASME horizontal tank. An automatic start-stop pressure switch runs the machine, so it is not running while you are not using it. A pressure regulator and gauge set delivery pressure at the outlet, which is a 1/4" connection. The tank drain is manual, so clearing condensate is a habit rather than an automatic function; do it at the end of a working day and the tank interior looks after itself.

What is not fitted is worth stating as plainly as what is: no air dryer, no aftercooler, no electronic drain valve, no pump low-oil shut-off. None of those are faults — they are what separates a portable single-stage machine from a stationary two-stage installation — but if your work needs genuinely dry air, plan for filtration downstream and budget for it now.

The specification block for this model records ASME for the receiver, along with UL and CSA. An ASME receiver is a pressure vessel built and stamped to a recognised construction code — the claim that carries the most weight on a tank holding air at 135 PSI, and often what a commercial insurer or a workplace inspector actually asks to see.

Shipping and receiving

This ships as palletised freight within the lower 48 states, quoted live at checkout against your own address rather than estimated from a table.

Decide in advance how it comes off the truck. The driver's responsibility ends at the tailgate, so a forklift, a dock, or two able people and a pallet jack on level ground is what you want on site. If you have none of those, take terminal pickup and collect from the carrier yourself. A home address is a residential delivery and carries a residential fee — better settled now than argued about on the day.

Inspect it before you sign. Damage written onto the bill of lading in front of the driver is claimable; damage found after a clean signature usually is not.

Warranty

The product page states a 1-Year factory warranty that extends to a 3-Year "No Bull" warranty. Note that the specification block separately records both the consumer and the commercial warranty as 1 Year, so the two sources here do not agree about the longer term, and we will not resolve that by picking the more attractive number.
