Four-post lifts are usually sold on capacity, and capacity is almost never what stops the sale. 9,000 lb will hold nearly anything you would put in a home or shop bay. What actually catches people out is width - a full-size pickup with mirrors out, or a dual-rear-wheel truck, going up a ramp between two steel columns with no room to correct.

The VP9K-DX-XLT is the wide one. It gives 99″ of drive-through width, 111-1/2″ between the columns, and runways 20″ across the tread. Those three figures are why this model exists, and the current description does not print a single one of them.

Width, in the order it matters

Drive-through width is the gap you steer through. At 99″ you are not threading a needle in a full-size truck, which matters most on the way back down, in reverse, with a spotter you do not have. Clearance between the columns, 111-1/2″, is the figure that decides whether a door opens once the vehicle is up there - a lift you cannot get out of is a storage rack, not a service lift. And the runway tread width of 20″ governs how much of your tyre is actually supported: wide runways make lining up a wide-track vehicle a matter of driving rather than aiming.

The floor space this genuinely needs

This is an extended-length lift and the footprint is not modest. Overall length is 239″ with the approach ramps in place and 197″ without them, the difference being the 37″ ramps themselves. Overall width is 123″, rising to 134-1/2″ once the power unit is accounted for - and the power unit is not optional, so plan against the larger number.

The columns stand 97″. That is the lift alone; what governs your building is 97″ plus nothing, because the vehicle on top sits above the runways. Measure your own ceiling, subtract the height of the vehicle you intend to store up there, and see what is left. Nobody can do that measurement for you, and it is the single most common reason a four-post ends up going back.

Will It Fit? The checklist

• Floor length. Allow 239″ with ramps down. If space is tight the ramps can be dealt with separately, but 197″ is the hard minimum for the lift structure itself.
• Floor width. 123″ for the lift, 134-1/2″ allowing for the power unit. Add working room on at least one side.
• Height. Columns 97″. Then add whatever goes on top.
• Clearance underneath. Our specification sheet gives 81″ under the runways. Another of our own on-page fields reads an inch lower than that, and we would rather tell you than quietly print the flattering one - if your lower vehicle is within an inch of that figure, ask us to confirm it with the manufacturer in writing before you order.
• Maximum rise. 85″ at the top of the runway, with locking positions every 11″ up the columns.
• Runway height when down. 4.80″, which is your approach angle problem if the car is low.
• Power. 115V, 20 Amp, single phase - an ordinary circuit, not a three-phase supply.
• Floor. A four-post storage lift stands on its own base plates rather than depending on anchors the way a two-post does, but the slab underneath still has to be sound, level and thick enough. Our product data does not state a slab specification for this model, so we will not invent one - ask us and we will get the requirement from the manufacturer in writing before you pour or order.

A 115V lift, which is not a small detail

The power unit runs on 115V at 20 Amp, single phase. On a lift this size that is worth pausing on, because the alternative - a higher-voltage circuit run to the middle of a garage by an electrician - is a real cost and a real delay that quotes for two-post lifts routinely hide. A great many home garages and small shops already have a suitable circuit or can have one without rewiring the building.

Cable drive, single-point release and slack cable safety

The lift is cable driven with a single-point manual lock release, so the four locks come off together from one place rather than being released column by column. On a four-post that is both a convenience and a safety property: the failure mode you want to design out is a lift coming down on three locks while somebody is still at the fourth.

Backing that up is a slack cable safety system. Its job is the case nobody plans for - a cable that goes slack because it has stretched, jumped a sheave or failed. Slack means the load is no longer where the cable thinks it is, and the mechanism catches that condition rather than letting the carriage keep travelling. Locking positions every 11″ mean you can nearly always park the lift at a height that suits the job and let the mechanical locks, not the hydraulics, hold it there. Steel approach ramps come as part of the lift.
