Triumph NSS-8XLT: the four-post you can stand up under

One figure separates the NSS-8XLT from a standard four-post, and it is 79 inches of clearance under the runway. That is standing room for most adults. It is the difference between a lift you crouch under with a droplight and a lift you walk under with a socket set, and once you have worked on a car that way it is very hard to go back. Everything else about the XLT follows from that decision to build it tall: 94 inches of overall height, 82 inches of lift height, and a 180 inch runway to put a long vehicle on.

The design underneath is not new and that is the point. Triumph has been building this four-post on the same architecture for over 20 years, which is a long time for a product that carries 8,000 lbs over somebody's head. Nothing here is a first-generation idea being tested on your garage floor.

Will It Fit?

The XLT is deliberately bigger than a standard four-post in every direction, so this section decides the purchase. Confirm each figure against your own building before ordering, because none of it can be adjusted after delivery.

• Ceiling. The columns reach 94 inches. That is the lift on its own, empty. If you intend to stack, the ceiling has to clear the roof of the upper vehicle sitting at whichever lock you use, so measure your own vehicles rather than assuming the lift height is the answer.
• Floor length. 190 inches overall. Then add room to walk around the ends and room for the approach ramps when they are off the lift.
• Floor width. 112 inches overall, which is wider than a standard four-post. Check it against the bay before anything else, because width is what most often stops an XLT going where the buyer expected.
• Vehicle size. Drive-through width is 99 inches, the runways are 18 inches wide and sit 37 inches apart, and the runway length is 180 inches. A long-wheelbase truck that overhangs a standard four-post generally does not overhang this one.
• Power. 110V. No dedicated circuit, no electrician booked before the delivery date.
• Foundation. The slab requirement and the anchoring instructions live in Triumph's own manual and spec sheet for this model. Ask us for the current copies and read them before delivery day, not on it.

What 79 inches actually changes

Height under the runway is the specification that separates a storage lift from a service lift, and most four-posts in this capacity class are storage lifts that people also service cars on. At 79 inches you are upright underneath the vehicle. Exhaust work, fluid changes, gearbox and transfer case jobs, underbody inspection and rust treatment all stop being contortion. Tool trays stay at waist height instead of on the floor. Work that used to be scheduled for a whole Saturday because of the setup gets done in an evening, and the single biggest reason home lifts sit unused, which is that using them is uncomfortable, quietly disappears.

Extra length, and who needs it

The 180 inch runway and the 190 inch overall length are not a rounding up of the standard model. They exist for extended-cab pickups, long-wheelbase vans, full-size SUVs and classic American cars that hang off the end of a shorter deck. Parking a vehicle with the rear wheels near the end of a runway is the situation four-post owners describe as making them uneasy, and it is worth buying length to avoid. If you are stacking, the extra length also gives you somewhere to stand between the vehicle and the end of the deck while you work.

Ten locks, one release, and where the load goes

There are 10 locking positions, so a vehicle can be parked at whatever height suits the job, and it sits on mechanical locks rather than on hydraulic pressure. Lowering is a single-point release, which drops all four columns together instead of asking you to walk around freeing each one; on a lift this tall, walking around a raised vehicle to reach individual releases would be a genuine nuisance. A full raise takes 40 seconds. The load reaches the floor through base plates of 12 inches by 12 inches, and the lift ships with a caster kit for repositioning it. That kit is for moving the lift empty. A vehicle must never be on the lift while it is being rolled.

Certification, stated plainly

We do not list a third-party lift safety certification for this model and we will not imply one that is not in our data. Some commercial insurance policies, some fleet and municipal operations and some local jurisdictions require a lift to carry a specific named certification. If any of those apply to you, establish the requirement before you order rather than after the lift is bolted down. Call and ask; we would rather tell you what we do not know than lose the argument for you later.

Shipping and delivery

This lift travels by freight truck to addresses in the lower 48 states. Freight is quoted live at checkout against your address, so the number shown is a current carrier rate rather than a stale estimate. The crate is large and heavy, and taking it off the trailer is the receiver's responsibility, so plan for a forklift, a machine, or several people who know what they are doing. Collecting the shipment from the carrier's local terminal is often the simpler option, because the terminal has the equipment already. Delivery to a residential address carries a residential fee, added at checkout when you select it.

Do not sign until you have looked. Check the crate for crushed corners, gouges, shifted banding and any sign of oil, write what you find on the bill of lading while the driver is still there, and take photographs. Once a clean bill of lading is signed, the carrier's position is that the shipment arrived undamaged, and unwinding that is difficult.

Warranty

Triumph publishes a written warranty covering this lift; ask us for the current copy before ordering if the terms matter to your decision. The warning that applies to every hydraulic lift regardless of maker: if something goes wrong, do not take the power unit, a cylinder or a lock mechanism apart before a claim is open. A stripped component is normally treated as a modified one and that is the fastest route to losing cover you would otherwise have had. Photograph the fault, note the serial number, and call before you touch anything.
