Challenger Lifts CL4P9X — full-height 9,000 lb storage in a standard-width footprint

Of the 9,000 lb lifts in Challenger's CL4P9 range, the CL4P9X is the one that reaches the range's full height without demanding the range's full width. It stands on columns just over 8' tall, runs 233.5" long, and delivers the family's top figures — up to 85.5" of service rise and up to 80" of storage clearance — while measuring 112.25" across overall. That combination is the whole argument for this model: maximum air under the car, minimum bay width to get it.

It is a genuinely useful trade to understand, because most garages are constrained sideways rather than lengthwise. A bay that cannot take a wide lift will often happily take a long one, and the CL4P9X is built for exactly that shape of building.

Will It Fit?

Check the space before you order, not after. Ceiling height, bay width, door opening and slab condition are the buyer's responsibility, and a four-post lift is expensive to send back.

  • Footprint: 233.5" long by 112.25" wide overall.
  • Column spacing: 95" inside the columns, 184.75" between columns front to back.
  • Column height: just over 8'.
  • Recommended bay: a minimum of 11' x 22'.
  • Drive-through width: 6.65'.
  • Runways: 20" wide, 38" apart, 7" off the floor when lowered.
  • Longest vehicle: 179" maximum wheelbase.
  • Power: 115v or 230v single-phase, 1HP or 2HP motor.

The vertical numbers deserve a paragraph of their own because buyers routinely use the wrong one. Service rise of up to 85.5" is measured to the top of the runway — it tells you how high the lift itself goes, and it is what you add your vehicle's height to when you are working out whether the ceiling will take it. Storage clearance of up to 80" in the top locked position is measured underneath, and it is what tells you whether the second car will roll in below. A tall roof box, a raised suspension or a roof rack on the lower vehicle eats that clearance quickly.

The height is also the reason this model needs a proper look at the ceiling. Just over 8' of column plus whatever sits on the runways is more than a standard residential garage usually offers. If your ceiling is the limit, the shorter model in the same range exists precisely for that case.

Reach without width: why 95" inside the columns still works

Standing 95" apart on the inside faces, the columns of the CL4P9X sit close enough that the whole lift fits a conventional bay, and far enough apart that runways 20" wide and 38" between them have room either side. In practice that means a saloon, an estate or a mid-size SUV parks and unloads normally. What it does not give you is generous door swing for a full-size truck with wide doors — if that is your vehicle, the wide model in the family was built for you and this one was not.

How the lift holds the load

Challenger builds this range on commercial-grade formed runways rather than flat plate; formed steel is why a runway can be strong across a long unsupported span without being unliftably heavy. Four columns take the load and four lock ladders hold it.

Those lock ladders adjust, which solves a problem every installer meets: floors slope. Fixed locks force shimming until the geometry agrees; adjustable ladders take the difference up in the mechanism, so all four locks engage at the same position and the runways sit level.

Coming down, one single-point manual release disengages both column locks together. This is a safety feature disguised as a convenience: a lift that is off some of its locks and on the others is a lift with an unbalanced load path, and doing it in one motion removes that state entirely. Larger columns and base plates are specified across the 9,000 lb models in this range, and that extra section is what supports the additional height.

Running it: electricity in, nothing else

The CL4P9X operates without compressed air. For a home installation that removes an entire dependency — no compressor sized for the job, no air line run across the garage, no tank pressure to check before you can drop a car. The lift needs a suitable single-phase supply at 115v or 230v feeding a 1HP or 2HP motor and nothing more.

The runways carry a built-in accessory rail. Rolling jacks and oil drip trays, both sold separately, mount to it — the first turns a storage lift into a lift you can pull wheels on, the second keeps whatever is parked below free of drips. Neither requires modifying the lift.

Perfect For

  • Tall garages, narrow bays. The specific case this model answers.
  • Two-car stacking in one footprint. Where the second vehicle needs real clearance beneath, not just a token gap.
  • Light-duty general service. Challenger positions this range for light-duty work, and it earns that description.
  • Collectors and long-term storage. Locked, stable, and no air system to maintain between uses.

What's in the Box

The CL4P9X ships as a complete lift: four columns, formed runways, crossbeams, adjustable lock ladders, the hydraulic power unit and the single-point lock release, in a powder coat finish. Black is the colour listed for this model.

Rolling jacks and oil drip trays are the accessories Challenger names for this range and both are sold separately. If a particular adapter, ramp or extension matters to your installation, ask us to confirm it is included before you order.

Certification and anchoring

This range is listed by Challenger as ALI/ETL certified. The detail that separates it from most four-post lifts is the anchoring position: Challenger states that anchoring is not required to maintain that certification. On the majority of lifts, an unanchored installation is outside the terms of the listing.

Read that as a paperwork and portability advantage, not a suspension of the laws of physics. The slab still has to carry the load and be flat enough for the lock ladders to correct. Have the floor assessed if you are unsure. And if an insurer, an inspector or a fleet policy applies a documentation requirement of its own, confirm what it demands for this specific model before purchase — that is a five-minute conversation before the order and a much longer one afterwards.

Shipping and delivery

Freight only, to the lower 48 states, quoted live at checkout against your delivery address so the price reflects today's rates rather than a number typed into a description months ago.

Plan the unload. Freight carriers put the crate on the ground at kerbside at best, and this is a heavy crated lift; you need equipment or people ready, or you can elect to collect from the carrier's local terminal. A residential delivery address attracts a residential fee. Warehouse pickup is offered on this product.

Inspect before signing. Check the crate and the contents with the driver present and write any damage or shortage onto the bill of lading before you sign. Signing a clean bill of lading records that everything arrived undamaged, and unwinding that later is difficult.

Warranty

Warranty on this lift runs under Challenger's published terms, and our own claim route is set out at mechanicsuperstore.com/pages/warranty-claims. The data we hold for the CL4P9X does not state a warranty duration, so we have not printed one — ask and we will confirm the current term for you in writing.

If a fault appears, take the lift out of service and contact us before dismantling anything. Stripping a suspect component before it is examined is the quickest way to lose a claim that would otherwise have been paid; clear photographs of the fault in place are the most useful thing you can send us.
