Challenger 44040 — 40,000 lb in the smallest footprint the family offers
The interesting thing about the 44040 is what it does not need. It carries the same 40,000 lb as the longer models in this chain-driven range, but it does it inside 36' of bay and weighs 12,050 lb — the lightest 40,000 lb machine in the family. If you are putting heavy-truck capability into a building that already exists, rather than designing a building around a lift, this is usually the model that makes the project possible.
The limit that comes with it is honest and specific: 310" of maximum wheelbase. Inside that, you give up nothing at all.
Check the wheelbase first, everything else second
310" is roughly the point where medium-duty chassis end and the long tandem and bus work begins. Measure hub centre to hub centre on the longest vehicle you are committed to servicing. If it fits, this model saves you floor, freight weight and installation effort compared with the longer versions. If it does not, no amount of capacity makes up for a rear axle hanging off the end of a runway — ask us and we will point you at the longer model instead.
Fitting it to the building
The lift occupies 36' end to end and 17' 1.25" across, with 144" clear between the inside faces of the columns and 290" between columns along the bay. Columns stand 92" and the runway surface reaches 73" at full rise. Measure your ceiling to its lowest obstruction, not to the deck — sprinkler heads, unit heaters and an open roll-up door all sit below the structure.
Everything under and behind the lift is the buyer's to arrange: slab depth and concrete strength to Challenger's stated requirement, an anchor layout that does not land on a joint or a saw cut, and 230 - 460V three-phase power delivered to the 10 HP unit with a disconnect fitted. Have all three signed off before the freight is scheduled.
Runways, ramps and rolling jacks
Each runway is 32" wide and stands 14" above the floor, with diamond-plate approach ramps so a wet or worn tyre still bites on the climb. The spacing between runways adjusts across a 36" to 58" range — one deck, narrow-track vans through dual-rear-wheel chassis, no changeover parts.
Add rolling jacks and the usable spacing becomes 43" - 53.5". That narrower figure is the one to hold against your own axle widths if wheels-free work is part of the plan. Jacks are offered across a 15,000 lb to 35,000 lb range and are ordered separately, as is an oil drain pan — the crate contains the lift.
Why the front and rear move independently
A hydraulic power unit drives the lifting chains, and lever control lets the front and rear of the lift be raised together or one at a time. That sounds like a detail until you put a truck with a service crane or a loaded front on it: a rigid lift takes the vehicle up at whatever angle it sits, while independent control lets you bring it level. Level matters for anything you are about to measure, and it matters for anything you are about to stand under.
Lock positions run up each column so the deck can be set at working height, and one air-actuated release drops all four columns together rather than one at a time.

Certification, said straight
Our data for the 44040 records no independent safety listing for this model, so we are not going to write one onto the page. It is worth understanding what that means rather than what it sounds like: an independent listing is issued by a testing body that has examined the design, and it is a different document from any statement the manufacturer makes about its own product. Insurance carriers, fleet safety programmes and certain local inspection regimes require the independent kind. If your situation is one of those, say so before you order and we will get the current answer from Challenger in writing.
Delivery
This is a freight shipment to the lower 48 states, with the cost quoted live at checkout against your address instead of being printed here where it would go stale. Plan for unloading before it arrives — a forklift rated for the crate, or a terminal pickup arranged with the carrier. A residential delivery is available and attracts a residential fee. When the truck arrives, inspect before you sign: check the count, look for damage, note anything at all on the bill of lading, take photographs and let us know the same day.
Warranty
The manufacturer handles warranty; start a claim through our warranty claims page. One rule saves most of the trouble: leave the part alone until the claim is open. A component that has already been stripped is very hard to have accepted as a warranty failure.
