Challenger Lifts 44018E: an 18,000 lb four-post built around adjustable runways

Four-post lifts are usually specified on capacity and rise, and for a fleet shop those are rarely the numbers that decide anything. The 44018E leads with a different one: runway spacing adjustable from 36" to 54", which its own feature list describes as accommodating the tread widths of a variety of medium-sized transit vehicles.

That is a genuinely different design brief from a car lift. A shop running shuttle buses, box vans, ambulances and light trucks does not have one track width, it has half a dozen, and a fixed-runway lift makes every one of them a compromise. Being able to set the runways to the vehicle is what makes a mixed roster workable on a single deck.

Around that sits 18,000 lbs of capacity, a 78.75" rise, and approach ramps carried on heavy-duty steel roller wheels so a heavy ramp is moved by one person rather than two.

Wheelbase: two numbers, and you should have both

This is worth being straight about, because it is the figure a fleet buyer plans around. The product's feature list gives the maximum wheelbase as 194" to 236". The specification sheet for the same model gives a single value, 230".

We are not going to average them, pick the flattering one, or quietly print whichever fits the story better. If your longest vehicle sits anywhere near that range, tell us the wheelbase and we will confirm it against current documentation before your order is placed. On a lift at this price the five minutes it takes is not an imposition.

Will It Fit?

An 18,000 lb four-post needs a properly sized bay and a properly sized supply. The measurements to check are these.

  • Overall. 292" long by 138.125" wide.
  • Height overall. 102.5".
  • Between columns. 240", with 121" inside them.
  • Rise. 78.75" to the top of the runway, taking around 60 seconds.
  • Runways. 22" wide and 7.25" tall, with 36" to 54" of adjustment between them.
  • Rolling jacks. If you plan to use them, note the constraint stated in the manufacturer's own feature list: a rolling jack application requires fixed runways and runway spacing of 33-15/16" to 41-11/16". That is narrower than the full adjustment range, so a shop that wants both the wide setting and rolling jacks should talk to us before ordering.
  • Power. A 3HP motor on 208V-230V single-phase.

Concrete thickness and compressive strength are not stated in the specification data we hold for this model. We are not going to substitute a figure from a different lift, so ask us for the installation drawing and have your slab assessed against it. Verifying the floor, the ceiling clearance and the electrical supply before delivery is the buyer's responsibility, and every one of them is cheaper to establish while this is still a quotation.

Ramps, locks and the daily details

Two features on this lift exist because somebody watched a technician work. The first is the steel roller wheels on the approach ramps. Ramps for a lift this size are heavy, they get moved several times a day, and a ramp that has to be dragged is a ramp that eventually gets left where it fell. Putting them on rollers is not glamorous and it changes the ergonomics of every job.

The second is the single-point air-actuated lock release, which disengages the column locks simultaneously on the alignment model. On a four-post the locks — not the hydraulics — hold the load in position, so how they release is a stability question, not a convenience one. One control releasing all of them together removes the possibility of a deck coming down unevenly under a loaded vehicle.

The approach ramps themselves are diamond plate for traction on the drive-up, and the runway rail system is built in, so rolling jacks and an oil drain pan can be added later without modifying the deck. The lift is available in black columns only.

Perfect For

  • Transit and shuttle fleets whose vehicles vary in track width and where the adjustable runways earn their keep every day.
  • Municipal and utility garages running a mixed medium-duty roster on one deck.
  • Ambulance and emergency-service workshops, where vehicle widths rarely match and downtime is expensive.
  • General heavy-duty service bays needing 18,000 lbs and a long deck without stepping up to the heaviest platforms in the range.

What ships with it

Columns, adjustable runways with the built-in rail system, the lifting and locking assembly, power unit, and diamond-plate approach ramps on steel roller wheels.

Rolling jacks and the oil drain pan are sold separately, stated as such in the manufacturer's feature list. The rail system is there specifically so they can be added later. If you want either from the start — and remember the fixed-runway constraint above if you do — ask us to quote them with the lift.

Certification: what our data does and does not say

We would rather tell you this plainly than leave you to notice it. The specification data we hold for the 44018E carries no certification entry at all. Several other Challenger four-posts we sell do carry one; this record does not.

That is an absence of information in our data, not evidence that a listing does not exist — the two are genuinely different things and we are not going to blur them in either direction. But the distinction matters to a specific set of buyers. A third-party lift safety listing is an independent laboratory's assessment against a published standard, and it is not the same document as a manufacturer's own statement that a product meets its own specification. Insurers, corporate fleet safety policies and some local jurisdictions require the independent listing by name.

So: if a third-party safety listing is a condition of your insurance, your fleet policy or your local inspection, ask us before you order. We will go back to the manufacturer for current documentation on this exact model and give you a straight answer rather than an assumption. If it turns out the listing is not available for this configuration, you should know that before the lift is on a truck, not after.

Shipping and delivery

This lift ships as freight to the lower 48 states, and the freight charge is quoted live at checkout for your delivery address rather than printed here — lane rates move, and a number written into a description goes out of date silently.

Sort the unload out before the collection is booked. This is freight, delivered to the kerb, and getting it off the trailer is the receiver's job — so you need a forklift or telehandler with the rating and the reach to do it, or you arrange to collect from the carrier's terminal instead, which many shops find simpler. Warehouse pickup is also available on this listing. Where the delivery address is residential, a residential fee applies and is added at checkout when that option is selected.

Do not sign for it until you have looked at it. Count the pieces against the packing list, walk around the load with the driver, and write anything you find onto the bill of lading before it leaves — a dented section, torn shrink wrap, a pallet that has shifted. A clean signature ends the carrier's liability, and a claim raised after the truck has gone is a much weaker position.

Warranty

Warranty on this lift is handled through Challenger. Our specification data for this model holds a warranty reference rather than a term, and we would rather point you at the current wording than print a duration we cannot stand behind. Ask us to confirm what applies to your configuration, or see the warranty claims page.

One practical rule regardless of the term: do not strip a part you intend to claim on. An opened power unit, cylinder or lock assembly is extremely hard for anybody to assess after the fact, and taking it apart is the most reliable way to turn a covered failure into a disputed one. Leave it as it is, photograph it, and speak to us first.
