Challenger Lifts 44018 — 18,000 lb Heavy-Duty Four-Post Alignment Lift

The design decision that separates the 44018 from a plain four-post rack is that the accessory rail is built into the runway rather than bolted on afterwards. Rolling jacks and an oil drain pan mount to the rack itself, so a shop can buy the lift now and add wheels-free capability later without a retrofit kit or a second set of holes in the runway. On an 18,000 lb rack that will be in the building for twenty years, that is the difference between a lift you grow into and one you replace.

The second decision worth knowing about is the runways: they are adjustable, not fixed, and they span from 36" to 54" between them. That is what lets one rack carry a compact passenger car in the morning and a medium-sized transit van in the afternoon without the wheels hanging off the edge of a runway sized for something else.

Will It Fit?

A four-post rack takes floor space rather than headroom, and the numbers here are large. Overall length is 259" and overall width is 138.125". The clear space between the columns is 204" — 17 ft — with 121" inside the columns. Overall height is 102.5", which is the figure to check against a low door header or a mezzanine, not against your ceiling alone.

Rise height is 78.75". Runways sit 7.25" off the floor at their lowest and are 22" wide. Maximum wheelbase is quoted at 194", with the manufacturer's feature list extending that to 236" — see the note below, because those two figures do not agree and you should not plan around one of them without asking us first.

Power is a 3HP motor on a 208V–230V single-phase supply. Rise time is 60 seconds. A rolling-jack application is more restrictive than the rack itself: it requires fixed runways at a spacing of 33-15/16" to 41-11/16", which is narrower than the adjustable range, so decide whether you want rolling jacks before you specify the runways.

Your responsibility as the buyer: measuring the bay — length, width, door header and ceiling — and confirming your electrical supply, before the lift is built. Our product data for the 44018 does not state a concrete thickness or a concrete strength requirement. That is a real gap, not an oversight on your part: a four-post rack still transmits its load into the slab through four column base plates. Ask us and we will get the manufacturer's floor requirement in writing before you order.

Approach ramps: louvres, diamond plate and steel rollers

The approach ramps on this rack are diamond plate, for traction as a wheel climbs onto a raised runway — a wet tyre on a smooth steel ramp is how vehicles get away from technicians on a four-post. Less obvious, the ramps carry heavy-duty steel roller wheels, so a technician repositions them by rolling rather than by lifting. Approach ramps for an 18,000 lb rack are heavy, and a ramp that is awkward to move gets left where it is, which is how it ends up under a vehicle.

Single-point air lock release

On the alignment model, one air-actuated control disengages all of the column locks at the same time. The alternative is a technician walking the rack and releasing locks one at a time, with the load shifting slightly as each one comes off. On a rack this long, simultaneous release keeps the runways level through the whole descent, which matters more here than on a shorter lift simply because there is more rack for a small difference to show up across.

About the alignment specification — read this before you order

This is sold as an alignment model, and it has the features you would expect: the single-point release, the adjustable runways, the runway rail system for turn-plate and slip-plate accessories. But our data for the 44018 carries no published two-wheel or four-wheel alignment wheelbase range — those rows on the spec sheet are blank. If you are buying this rack specifically to do alignments on a particular class of vehicle, do not assume the range from the maximum wheelbase figure. Tell us the vehicles and we will get the alignment range confirmed by the manufacturer in writing.

Where our sources disagree

One conflict, and it is a material one:

  • Maximum wheelbase. The model spec sheet reads 194". The manufacturer's feature list for the same model reads 194" to 236". That gap is far too wide to be a rounding error, and the longer figure is exactly the one a fleet buyer would plan around.

We have not picked one. If your longest vehicle sits between those two numbers, contact us and we will confirm the current figure against the factory drawing before you place an order.

Perfect For

Fleet and transit workshops running medium-sized vans and light commercial vehicles that a two-post lift handles awkwardly. Alignment bays that want one rack for service and alignment work rather than tying up a dedicated bay. Municipal, utility and school-bus garages where vehicles are heavy, wheelbases are long and the work is routine servicing rather than teardown. Shops planning ahead — the built-in rail means the rolling jacks and drain pan can be a second purchase. It is not a home-garage rack: at 259" long and 138.125" wide it needs a commercial bay, and it is available in black columns only, so it is not a lift you specify to match a showroom.

What's in the Box

The rack, its four columns, the runways and the diamond-plate approach ramps with their steel roller wheels. Rolling jacks and the oil drain pan are explicitly sold separately — the rail system is what makes them fit, not what includes them. Turn plates, slip plates and alignment accessories are likewise not listed as included in the copy we hold. If a quote you are comparing includes them, check ours does too before comparing the totals.

Certification — what we can and cannot tell you

We are going to be direct about this one, because it is the sort of thing a capital equipment purchase should not leave to inference. Our product data for the 44018 carries no third-party safety certification claim at all. Not a negative finding — an absent one. The certification field is empty, and we will not put a badge on a page to fill a gap.

Why it matters: a manufacturer's own declaration that a product meets a standard is a different document from a third-party North American lift safety listing issued by an independent body after testing. Some insurers, many fleet operators and some local jurisdictions and inspectors require the second kind, and will not accept the first. If any of those apply to you — and if you are a commercial shop, at least one of them probably does — ask us before you order. We will get the manufacturer's current listing status for this exact model in writing and send it to you. That is a better answer than a page that guesses.

Shipping and Delivery

The 44018 ships by freight to the lower 48 states, and the freight cost is quoted live at checkout against your address rather than being written into this page. A rack of this size arrives on a large shipment and you must be able to receive it: a forklift or telehandler with the reach to take long runways, or a collection from the carrier's terminal, which is frequently the easier route. Residential delivery is available and carries a residential fee. Inspect before signing — count the pieces against the paperwork, look at the runway ends and the column packaging, and record any damage on the bill of lading in front of the driver. A clean signature closes off most of what you could otherwise claim.

Warranty

Warranty is administered through the manufacturer and our process is on the warranty claims page. We have not published a term for this model because we do not hold one we would put our name to — ask and we will send the manufacturer's current wording. Whatever the term turns out to be, one rule protects it: do not dismantle a part you intend to claim on. Take the lift out of service, photograph the fault as it sits, and call us before anything comes apart. Disassembly before assessment is the most common reason a valid claim is refused.
