Description
-Challenger 4030XAX — the 30,000 lb alignment lift that tells you the room it needs
Challenger publishes a minimum recommended bay size for this model: 34' x 17'. That single line is the most useful thing on its data sheet, and it is the reason to start here rather than with the capacity. Most heavy alignment lifts leave the buyer to work backwards from a footprint drawing and guess at circulation space; this one states the room the installation actually wants, so you can measure your building once and know the answer.
Inside that bay you get the long-chassis version of the 4030 platform — a 317" maximum wheelbase — on an alignment deck with recessed turn plate pockets, rated for two-wheel alignment out to 292". It is cable-driven, running heavy steel sheaves and cables rather than a chain, and it is ALI/ETL certified.
Planning the bay
Work through these in order and the install goes quietly:
- Floor area. 34' x 17' minimum recommended. The lift itself is 380" long and 172.75" wide; the difference between those two figures is the working space, and it is not padding.
- Drive-through. 318.625" between columns, with 152" clear between the inside faces. That is what governs whether a vehicle can be driven off the front rather than reversed off the back.
- Ceiling. Columns are 92.25" and the runway surface reaches 71.75" at full rise. Measure to the lowest fixture in the bay, not to the roof structure.
- Shop air. The lock release is pneumatic and needs 90 - 120 psi at the lift. Shops routinely remember the electrical supply and forget this one.
- Power. 3 HP on 208 - 230V single phase — no three-phase service required, which is often the item that decides whether the project happens this year.
Slab thickness, concrete strength, anchor layout and flatness are the buyer's responsibility. Flatness matters more on an alignment lift than on a service lift, because your measurements are referenced to the runways.
The alignment deck
Recessed turn plate pockets are the defining feature of this variant. Sinking the plates into the runway means the vehicle sits flat on the deck rather than up on a pair of plates, which is both the correct geometry for measurement and one less trip hazard on a raised runway. The lift is designed to work with current camera imaging alignment systems, so it is not restricted to the equipment of the era it was designed in.
The published two-wheel alignment maximum is 292". Note that this is a different number from the 317" wheelbase limit — a vehicle can be within the lifting range and outside the alignment range. Check both against your fleet.
Lock ladders that account for a real floor
Lock ladders on this lift are adjustable. That reads as a minor feature and is actually a concession to the truth about shop floors: they slope, they settle, and a poured slab is rarely as flat as a drawing says. Adjustable ladders let the installer bring all four columns into agreement on the floor you have, rather than the floor the lift assumed. Multiple lock positions then let the deck sit at whatever height suits the job, and a single air-actuated control releases every column together.
Runways are 24" wide and sit just 8.5" off the floor with diamond-plate approach ramps — a low drive-on angle, which matters when the vehicle has limited ground clearance or a long front overhang.
Perfect For
- Commercial alignment bays handling long-wheelbase chassis up to the published limits.
- Fleet workshops that need alignment and general service from one lift.
- Shops on single-phase power — the 3 HP unit removes a service upgrade from the budget.
- New builds, where the published 34' x 17' bay can be designed in from the start.
What is included, and what is not
The lift comes with its runways, columns, power unit, approach ramps and the single-point lock release. Rolling jacks and an oil drain pan are sold separately. They mount to the built-in runway rail system, which is part of the lift — so adding them later is a purchase, not a modification. Columns are black.

About that certification
Challenger's own specification for the 4030XAX records it as ALI/ETL certified, and we are repeating that rather than interpreting it. Worth knowing what it buys you: this is a third-party listing, meaning an independent body examined the design, as distinct from a manufacturer declaring conformity for itself. Insurers, fleet safety programmes and some local inspection authorities ask for exactly that distinction, and plenty of heavy lifts on the market cannot answer it. If you need the certificate itself for an inspection file, ask us and we will source the current document.
Freight and delivery
Freight to the lower 48 states, quoted live at checkout against your own address instead of being printed here where it would age badly. You will need to unload it: a forklift rated for the crate, or a terminal collection booked with the carrier. Residential delivery is available and adds a residential fee. Inspect before signing — count the pieces, look for bent or crushed steel, note anything on the bill of lading while the driver is present, photograph it and tell us the same day.
Warranty
Manufacturer warranty; our warranty claims page explains how to open one. Leave a suspect component intact until the claim is registered — a part that has been taken apart usually cannot be inspected, and that is the most common way a good claim goes bad.
