Atlas TC229 with Dual Assist Arms: two helpers, not one

Most tire changers in this class are sold either bare or with a single assist arm. This TC229 ships with the DAA-SA dual assist arm package — two independent arms, one on each side. The left-hand arm carries a pressing block and a pressing/lifting disc; the right-hand arm carries a pressing/lifting disc and a bead roller. That is the difference between having a second pair of hands and having one finger to lean on, and on a modern low-profile or runflat tyre it decides whether a single operator can do the job at all.

Anyone who has fought a stiff sidewall alone knows the failure mode: you get one bead over, you reach for a lever, and the first bead pops back out. Two arms hold both sides down while you work the mount/demount head. Everything else on the machine — the rim clamp turntable, the swing arm, the built-in Beadblaster — is a well-proven layout for a home shop, a small commercial garage or an ATV and motorcycle dealer.

What the two arms actually do

The arms are not decoration and they are not interchangeable with each other. The pressing block flattens a sidewall down into the drop centre so the bead has somewhere to go; the pressing/lifting discs hold it there and lift the upper bead clear during mounting; the bead roller works the bead progressively around the rim rather than in one violent shove. Together they let you keep both hands on the tools instead of using one to hold the tyre. On a runflat — where the sidewall is doing structural work and simply will not flex the way a conventional tyre does — this is not a time saving, it is the only practical single-operator method.

The Beadblaster, and why it is on the buy list

A stiff-sidewall or slightly distorted tyre often will not seat because air escapes past the bead faster than the inflator can put it in. The TC229's built-in Beadblaster dumps a large volume of air into the tyre in one burst, which pushes both beads outward against the rim long enough for the inflator to catch up. Without one you end up with straps, spray and a bad afternoon. It is built into this machine rather than bolted on, and it is one of the two features that separates the TC229 from the smaller changer in the same family.

Rim clamping: the range, and the three positions

The turntable jaws clamp externally from 9 3/4" to 23 1/4", or internally from 11 5/8" to 25 1/4", and the jaws themselves relocate to three positions along the turntable slide to move that window up or down. Maximum tyre diameter is 39" and maximum wheel width at the bead breaker is 13".

Clamping externally grips the outside of the rim flange; clamping internally grips from inside the barrel, which keeps the jaws away from a polished outer face. That is why expensive alloy wheels get changed internally, and why plastic jaw covers are supplied. Between the covers, the metal mount/demount head with its replaceable plastic inserts, and the choice of clamping mode, the machine is set up to handle painted and polished rims without leaving a mark — which on a customer's wheel is the entire commercial argument.

What you also need: air

This is the part buyers most often miss. The jaws and the bead breaker are air operated and an external air supply is required and not included. The machine wants 90-110 PSI and must not exceed 140 PSI. If your compressor cannot hold that pressure at the flow the bead breaker draws, the machine will feel weak and it will not be the machine's fault. Sort the compressor out before the changer arrives. Power for the turntable is ordinary 110volt.

Know its ceiling before you buy

We would rather say this than sell you the wrong machine. If you plan to change tyres for larger 1 ton pickups, big SUVs or agricultural equipment — now or in the next couple of years — this is not the model. The turntable and clearance on the larger Atlas changer are sized for that work, and the honest answer is to buy up front rather than replace in eighteen months. Within cars, light trucks, ATVs and motorcycles, the TC229 has plenty of headroom.

Perfect For

  • The serious home shop doing seasonal changeovers and its own low-profile fitments.
  • Small commercial garages adding tyre work to a general service offering.
  • ATV and motorcycle dealers — motorcycle and ATV adapters are available separately.
  • Single-operator bays, which is exactly what the dual assist arms are for.

What's in the Box

The dual assist arms are included, as is the column-mounted inflator box with gauge and the filter/regulator/lubricator. Also supplied: a 20" tyre tool, a lube bucket with brush, a set of large plastic jaw covers, a plastic cover for the bead breaker shovel, and multiple replacement plastic inserts for the mount/demount head. Motorcycle and ATV adapters are sold separately. An air compressor is not included. The machine requires some assembly after purchase — plan for that rather than expecting to change a tyre the hour it lands.

Certification, honestly

The manufacturer's data for this machine does not state a third-party listing, and we will not imply one. Tyre changers are usually assessed on the electrical and pneumatic side rather than through a lift-safety scheme, and requirements vary: some commercial insurers and some local authorities ask for equipment carrying a recognised third-party mark on shop machinery. If that applies to your premises, check exactly what your insurer or inspector wants before you order, and ask us — we would rather answer the question than have you find out at renewal.

Shipping and delivery

This is a freight shipment within the lower 48. It arrives crated on a pallet and is delivered curbside, so you will need a forklift, a pallet truck and a dock, or enough hands and a ramp — or you can arrange terminal pickup and collect it yourself. Warehouse pickup is available at the locations listed on this page. A residential delivery carries an additional fee, applied once per brand on your order. Check the crate over before the driver leaves: look at the column, the inflator box and the turntable, and put anything you find on the bill of lading. Signing a clean bill of lading and reporting damage afterwards makes a claim very hard to win.

Warranty

1 year parts only. That covers the parts and not the labour to fit them, so budget accordingly if a technician will be doing the work. Replacement parts and wear items — jaw covers, head inserts, the bead breaker shovel cover — are stocked, which matters more on a tyre changer than on almost anything else in a shop, because the consumables are what actually stop the machine. Do not strip an assembly before a claim is opened; disassembly is normally read as your own inspection and can end the claim. Raise it through our warranty claims page.
