Description
-Atlas TC229: the bead blaster is built in, and here is what it is for
The difference between this machine and the plain TC221 is one system, and it earns the price on a specific job. A bead blaster releases a large, sudden volume of air into the tyre through nozzles in the turntable, so the beads slap outward against the rim flanges and seal long enough for the inflator to take over. Without one, a stiff-sidewall tyre, a run-flat, or anything that has sat folded in a warehouse gets wrestled with a ratchet strap and patience, and it is the job that turns a fifteen-minute tyre change into forty minutes and a bad mood. With one, it is a lever pull.
Around that sits a full rim-clamp, swing-arm tyre changer with air-operated jaws and bead breaker, an electric turntable, and a mount/demount head with a metal roller and replaceable plastic inserts. It is aimed at a home shop with real ambitions, a small commercial garage, or a powersports dealer.
What it will take, and one honest caveat
The jaws clamp externally or internally, each in three selectable positions along the turntable slide, and the machine handles steel, aluminium and alloy rims. Maximum tyre diameter is 39 inches and maximum wheel width at the bead breaker is 13 inches. The full clamping ranges are in the specification table further down this page — check yours against them, and note that external clamping starts at 9 3/4 inches.
Now the caveat, because this page's own copy names the ATV and motorcycle dealer as a buyer. In its standard configuration this machine's jaws are built for car and light-truck rims. Working small ATV wheels and motorcycle rims on a machine of this type is done with flip adapters, and those adapters are not included — Atlas offers them separately. If motorcycle or ATV work is why you are buying this machine, ask us in writing which adapter set fits it and what the resulting clamping range is before you order. We would rather answer that question now than have you discover it with the crate open.
Will It Fit — your shop
- Power. The turntable motor is 1 HP on 110 volt. One ordinary circuit, no three-phase.
- Air. This is where people get caught. The jaws and the bead breaker are air operated and the air supply is not included. The machine wants 90 to 110 PSI and must not exceed 140 PSI — that upper figure is a limit, not a target, and a regulator set carelessly is how the pneumatics get damaged. If you do not already own a compressor that holds pressure at the far end of a hose run, budget for one alongside this machine.
- Bead breaker force is 5,500 lbs, which is what gets a rusted-on bead off a wheel that has not been touched in a decade.
- Turntable torque is 885 ft/lbs.
- Floor and assembly. The TC229 requires some assembly after purchase — this is stated plainly by the manufacturer and we are repeating it rather than leaving it as a surprise. Allow bench space, two people and an afternoon.
- Delivery weight is 550 lbs, crated.
Confirming your circuit, your compressor and your floor space is the buyer's responsibility. Tell us the rims you handle most and we will check them against the clamping ranges in writing.
Not damaging the wheel is the whole job
On a modern intake, most of the value in a tyre changer is in what it does not do to an expensive alloy. Three parts of this machine address that directly. The turntable jaws take plastic covers, so the clamping faces are not steel against a painted or polished rim. The mount/demount head carries replaceable plastic inserts as an alternative to the metal roller, and a set of spares is supplied — those inserts are consumable by design, and running them worn is how rims get marked. And the bead breaker shovel takes its own plastic cover. A machine that arrives with all three is a machine that can be used on customer wheels from the first day rather than after a parts order.
Clamping in three positions, and why that is not a gimmick
The jaws move to three mounting positions along the turntable slide, in both the external and internal arrangements. That is a wider practical range than a fixed-jaw machine, and more importantly it lets you choose the position that grips a particular rim most securely rather than the only position available. On thin-lipped alloys, where the jaw sits on the rim decides whether it holds or slips, and slipping under torque is what damages a wheel.
Perfect For
- A small commercial garage adding tyre work in-house instead of subcontracting it.
- A serious home or club workshop with a compressor already installed.
- A powersports or ATV dealer — but read the adapter caveat above first.
- Not for the larger pickup (1 ton), large SUV or agricultural tyres. The manufacturer directs that work to the larger TC289, and we would rather sell you the right machine once.
What is in the box
Generous, and worth comparing before you price this against something cheaper. Per this page's feature list: the column-mounted inflator box with gauge, a filter/regulator/lubricator, a 20 inch tyre tool, a lube bucket with brush, a set of large plastic jaw covers, the plastic cover for the bead breaker shovel, and multiple replacement plastic inserts for the mount/demount head. Not included: the air supply, the motorcycle and ATV flip adapters, and assembly. Atlas states replacement parts and wear items are kept in stock, which is the difference between a day of downtime and a month of it.
Certification, stated plainly
No third-party safety listing or conformity marking is claimed for this tyre changer anywhere in our product data, and we are not going to imply one. If your insurer or your local authority requires a specific listing for shop equipment, ask us in writing before ordering and we will put the question to Atlas rather than answer on their behalf.
Shipping and delivery
This is a freight shipment inside the lower 48 states, quoted live at checkout rather than printed here, because freight rates move. Two things decide whether delivery day goes well. First, unloading is yours to arrange: a freight truck will not lift the crate off the trailer for you, so you need a forklift, a skid steer or a comparable machine at the delivery address, or you take the shipment at the carrier terminal instead. Tell us which before it ships. Second, inspect before you sign. Walk the crate, look for crushed corners, punctures, shifted banding and oil marks, and write anything you find on the delivery receipt before the driver leaves. A signed clean receipt is the carrier's proof that the freight arrived undamaged, and a concealed-damage claim raised afterwards is a far harder argument than three words written on the paperwork. Residential delivery is available and carries a residential fee. Warehouse pickup is available at our stocking locations if you would rather collect it.
Warranty, and one thing we cannot confirm for you
This page publishes 1 year, parts only, and that is the term we sell it on. There is a second account in circulation: at least one other retailer of this machine publishes the same one year parts-only cover with an additional, shorter carve-out for wear items. We are not going to reconcile those two by choosing one, because we cannot verify the second against Atlas documentation we hold. It matters more here than on most machines, because a tyre changer is a machine whose plastic inserts, jaw covers and shovel cover are designed to wear out. If the wear-item position affects your decision, ask us in writing before ordering and we will get the current terms from Atlas. Whatever the answer, contact us before dismantling anything — a stripped machine is the usual reason a good claim is refused.
