Atlas 408SL + RJ35 jacks: the storage lift with two bends in every column

Pick up a section of column from an ordinary hobbyist four-post lift and it is a straight box. The 408SL’s columns are not. Each is formed with two deliberate bends along its length, and that one manufacturing decision does two jobs. A bent section resists flexing far better than a flat one of the same gauge, so the column is stiffer under load. And the bends add surface area for the slide block to travel on, spreading the wear that eventually shows up as slop in a lift used hard for a decade.

The 408SL carries more than 100 lbs of extra steel over other hobbyist lifts built on the same column and runway configuration. It is rated at 8,000 lbs, free-standing and portable on the included caster kit, and it runs on ordinary 110V household power. This package pairs it with two RJ35 sliding bridge jacks, which turns a storage lift into one you can do wheel and brake work on.

Will It Fit?

A portable lift must clear the building it lives in, and measuring the garage is the buyer’s job. Work through these before ordering; call us if any is close.

• Ceiling. The columns stand 83″ (6′ 11″). Add whatever you park on top, plus the door track and lighting — a low-profile opener is what people forget.
• Working height — this listing and the factory disagree. Lifting height at the top of the runway is given here as 70″ (5′ 10″), with 5′ 5 1/4″ of clearance under the runways. Atlas publishes more on both counts, so plan around neither until you have read the section below.
• Floor length. Overall length with the approach ramp is 17′ 1 3/8″. Between the columns you have 156″ (13′), and the runways are 13′ 10 3/4″ long.
• Floor width. 9′ 9 1/2″ overall with the motor, 9′ 1 5/8″ without. Clearance between the columns is 7′ 10 1/2″; drive-through is 82″ (6′ 10″).
• Track width. Runways sit 37 1/4″ apart, or 34 3/8″ between the rails, on a driving surface 18 3/4″ wide and 4 3/4″ thick. Check the narrower figure against your narrowest vehicle’s track width.
• Power. 110V, with a 30 amp breaker. The plug is not supplied, so expect a short electrician visit.
• Anchors. Anchor bolts are optional and sold separately; this lift stands free.
• Oil. 3-5 gallons of AW32 or AW46 hydraulic oil, not included.

Where the cables go, and why that is worth paying for

On most portable four-post lifts the horizontal cables run in the open along the cross tubes and the lock hardware is visible at every column. On the 408SL the horizontal cables are routed inside the cross tubes, and professional-grade wheel covers close off almost all remaining exposure of the cables and the double lock system.

It looks like commercial equipment rather than a kit of parts, which matters if the lift lives in a garage you spend time in. And a cable you cannot brush past with a toolbox, a bike or a trailer tongue is a cable that does not get nicked, while a cover over the lock ladder keeps dust out of the mechanism your vehicle rests on.

Portable, but built to the commercial pattern

The rest of the lift follows the commercial pattern rather than the hobby one — larger column sections, commercial-grade wear blocks, a double lock safety system on a lock ladder, a single-point release freeing all four corners together — then adds a caster kit with polyurethane wheels and a power unit that mounts at whichever corner suits your wall socket.

The two RJ35 sliding jacks, and what they change

A four-post holds a vehicle by its tires: fine for storage, fine for anything under the car, useless the moment you need a wheel off. The two included RJ35 sliding bridge jacks slide along the runways and pick the vehicle up by its frame, so the wheels hang free.

Each is rated at 3,500 lbs and works on a manual hand pump — no air line, no wiring, nothing to plumb. The scissor mechanism raises the pad vertically and level rather than through an arc, keeping the load stable as it comes off the tires. Width adjusts from 2′ 5 1/2″ to 5′ 4 3/4″, the arms adjust to reach real lifting points, and there are multiple safety lock positions rather than one. Minimum height with the lift pad above the runway is 3 1/2″; maximum raised height is 11″ bare or 17 1/4″ with adapters. Each jack weighs 350 lbs, so plan how they get onto the runways.

Height with the jacks on top: two contested figures

Two of the height figures in that fitment list are contested, and the jacks make it awkward. A bridge jack sits on the runways and lifts from there, so your real working height is the runway height plus however far the jack has raised the car, and the room a stored vehicle has beneath the deck is the other half of the same sum. Atlas’s current specification sheet for the 408SL states a taller lifting height at the top of the runway than this page does, and more clearance beneath the runways, and it marks its lifting height as a not-on-lock reading — a different measurement from a lift on its lock ladder. The factory being the more generous of the two is not a bonus to bank: it means the figures are unsettled, and we will not stand behind either set.

Get both heights confirmed by us in writing before you place this order. Then stand in the bay with a tape: floor to ceiling, floor to the roof of whatever will live underneath, floor to your own raised hands. Checked against a confirmed figure, those readings decide whether this package suits the building — easier to take now than around a crate on a pallet.

Certification, stated honestly

The product data we hold for this lift does not carry an independent North American lift safety listing, and we prefer to say so outright. For a private garage it is almost never a factor. It becomes one in a narrow set of cases: some insurance policies, some landlord agreements, and some local inspection regimes accept only lifting equipment carrying a recognised third-party safety listing. If you are in one of those, get the requirement in writing from whoever imposes it and speak to us before ordering.

Shipping and Delivery

The lift and both jacks ship as freight within the lower 48. This is not parcel delivery and the driver will not bring it inside — you need a forklift, a dock or equivalent equipment at the address, or take warehouse pickup instead, listed further down this page. Residential delivery carries a fee, quoted live at checkout because carrier rates move.

Inspect before you sign: crate count against the paperwork, then corners, banding and crushed packaging. Record any damage or shortage on the bill of lading in front of the driver — a clean signature tells the carrier everything arrived intact.

Warranty

The 408SL is covered for 2 years structural and 2 years hydraulic, parts only. Each RJ35 jack carries a 1 year parts-only warranty. Parts only means the covered component is supplied and fitting labour is not.
