Atlas APEX8 ALI Certified 4-Post Lift

Certification and portability do not usually arrive together. A lift that carries an independent third-party listing is normally one that gets anchored to a slab and stays there; a lift you can roll around the garage is normally one sold on the factory's own word. The APEX8 is both — ALI certified, and free-standing on a caster kit with polyurethane wheels, with anchor bolts an option rather than a requirement.

That combination is the reason to look at this one rather than a cheaper four-post. It is an 8,000 lb hobbyist-grade lift that will pass a documentation question, and it is not bolted to the floor.

What ALI Certification Actually Means Here

An independent third-party lift listing is not a sticker the factory prints. It means an outside test laboratory validated the lift's design against the North American vehicle lift safety standard and audits the plant that builds it, on an ongoing basis. That is a different thing from a manufacturer's own declaration of conformity, and the difference has consequences outside the garage: some insurers, most fleet operations and a number of local building and workplace codes require a listed lift by name.

If you are in one of those categories, this matters more than any other line on this page, because certification cannot be added to a lift after you own it. If you are not, it remains a reasonable proxy for a design examined by someone other than the people selling it. Confirm your own requirement with your insurer or inspector either way.

Will It Fit?

  • Ceiling. This page lists the columns at 85" (7' 1") — a figure the manufacturer's current specification disputes; read the note under this list before you measure. Add the roof height of whatever you intend to park underneath, plus clearance, and compare the total against your ceiling.
  • Width. 104" (8' 8") overall without the motor, 114" (9' 6") with it. Clearance between the columns is 94" (7' 10").
  • Length. 207 5/8" (17' 3 5/8") overall with the approach ramp fitted; 157 1/3" (13' 1 1/3") between the columns, with runways 169 1/2" (14' 1 1/2") long. Plan the ramp end as usable floor, not as a wall.
  • Getting a car on it. Drive-through is 80 1/4" (6' 8 1/4") outside of tire to outside of tire. Between the runways you have 38", narrowing to 33" at the rails — check that against the track of the vehicle you intend to lift.
  • Working height. 72" (6') to the top of the runway, with 67" (5' 7") of clearance underneath.
  • Power. 110 volt with a 30 amp breaker required — an ordinary single-phase circuit, correctly sized.
  • Delivery. 2,000 lbs shipping weight.

Measuring your ceiling, your floor and your door opening — and confirming the circuit — is the customer's responsibility. Free-standing does not mean the floor is irrelevant: it must be level, sound and able to carry a concentrated load at four points.

The Column Height On This Page Is Disputed

The column height quoted in that list, and in the table further down, is the figure our own specification sheet carries. The manufacturer's current published specification for this lift is taller, because it measures over the nuts capping the columns rather than over the column steel. Both are real measurements of a real object. They are not measurements of the same point, we cannot reconcile them from the data we hold, and this page is not going to name a winner.

It matters because this is the number that decides whether the lift stands up in your building at all, and it has to stand up empty before a car ever goes on it. A domestic garage rarely has spare headroom, and the ceiling is rarely the lowest thing in the room: a sectional door track, an opener rail and its motor, a strip light or a joist normally hangs below the plaster. Measure to the lowest of those, over the spot where a column will actually stand.

Ask us for the factory column height in writing, check it against that measurement, and only then order. A lift that will not stand upright under your ceiling is a freight bill in both directions, and the question takes one email to answer.

Two Locks, and a Ladder

The APEX8 uses a lock-ladder design with a double lock safety system, released from a single point. Worth unpacking, because this is where four-post lifts differ from each other in ways the spec sheet flattens.

A lock ladder means the lift can be parked at multiple discrete heights rather than only at the top of its travel, with the load carried on steel locks rather than on hydraulic pressure. That is what makes a four-post safe to leave loaded for months — which is exactly what you do when you are stacking cars for storage. The double lock system gives a second independent engagement, and single-point release means the whole lift comes off the locks from one control rather than four.

Storage, Service, or Both

Four-post lifts get bought for two different reasons and the APEX8 handles both. As storage, it doubles a parking space by stacking one car over another, and the caster kit means the whole loaded footprint can be repositioned when you rearrange the garage. As a service lift, drive-on runways make it the fastest lift to load — no arm positioning, no pad placement, no judgement about lifting points — and the 67" of clearance underneath is genuine standing room for most people.

The honest limitation of any four-post is wheels-on: the vehicle sits on its own tires, so brake and suspension work needs a bridge jack on the runways. That is an accessory decision, not a defect, and worth making at purchase.

Perfect For

  • Home garages doubling their parking — the core case, and the one the caster kit is for.
  • Collectors storing vehicles long-term on mechanical locks rather than on hydraulics.
  • Restoration shops needing a car up and stable for weeks at a time.
  • Anyone with a documentation requirement from an insurer or a landlord where a listed lift is the condition.

What's in the Box

  • Four columns, runways and the lock-ladder mechanism
  • Caster kit with polyurethane wheels
  • Steel approach ramps
  • Two wheel chocks
  • Powder coat finish throughout

Optional and not included: anchor bolts (sold separately — the lift does not require them), hydraulic oil at 3 to 5 gallons of AW32 or AW46, drip trays, and a sliding bridge jack if you want wheels-off capability.

Shipping and Delivery

Delivered by freight carrier within the lower 48. Freight is quoted live at checkout for your exact destination, so the figure is specific to your address rather than a national average.

Freight is curbside by nature: the truck arrives, and unloading is on you. Have a forklift, a loading dock or enough hands and equipment arranged before delivery day, or select terminal pickup and collect the crate yourself. If it is going to a house rather than a commercial address, residential delivery is available and carries a residential fee.

Check the crate over before you sign for it. Photograph anything that looks wrong, write the damage onto the bill of lading in front of the driver, and keep your copy. That written note is what makes a claim straightforward instead of a fight.

Warranty

The APEX8 carries a 5 year structural warranty and a 2 year hydraulic warranty. Structural is the columns, runways and lock mechanism; hydraulic is the power unit, cylinder and associated components. These are parts warranties — the component is supplied, the labour to fit it is yours.

Two things keep a claim clean. Use the lift as it is certified to be used: within capacity, on a level and sound floor, with the vehicle chocked and the load on the locks rather than on hydraulic pressure. And do not take apart a component you intend to claim on. Photograph the fault in place, stop using the lift and contact us before anything is disassembled — a stripped part has lost the evidence the claim depends on.
