Atlas 12ASL: the last ten inches are the safest part of the cycle

Most scissor lift descriptions talk about how high it goes. The more interesting number on the 12ASL is how it comes down. This lift carries a safety lowering limit switch: once the platforms descend to within 10" of the ground, the lift stops on its own. To bring it the rest of the way down the operator must release the Down button and press it again — a second, deliberate action at the exact point in the cycle where a foot, a hand, a creeper or a dropped tool is most likely to be underneath.

That interlock is a design decision, not a feature-list item, and it tells you what kind of machine this is: a commercial-grade, 12,000 lb capacity full-rise scissor alignment lift for a bay where several people move around one vehicle all day.

Will It Fit?

The 12ASL rises to 84 1/4" at the top of the runway — over seven feet — which is why it can be bolted to the floor or recessed into it. Both options need the measurements checked first.

• Concrete. A minimum of 6" at 3000 PSI. This is the specification most often skipped and most likely to stop an installation on the day. A slab of unknown age, or a thin topping over fill, needs a core sample rather than an assumption.
• Floor length — disputed, see below. This page lists 250" with the approach ramps fitted and 197" without them; Atlas publishes a longer overall length with the ramps on. The ramps are 72" on their own and they still occupy floor when the lift is down.
• Floor width. 86 3/8" overall, 39 1/4" between the runways, 34 3/8" between the rails. Leave walking room on both sides or the bay will not work.
• Ceiling. Add the tallest vehicle you will lift to the 84 1/4" rise, then standing room underneath. Roof trusses, lights and door tracks catch people out.
• Lowered height. 11 1/2" surface mounted. Flush mounting removes that obstacle entirely, at the cost of a concrete job.
• Wheelbase. 90" to 168" for four-wheel alignment; 86" to 172" for two-wheel.
• Power. 220V at plus or minus 5%, single phase, on a 30 amp circuit.
• Air. 90-120 PSI for the air-actuated lock system.
• Oil. 3-5 gallons of AW32 or AW46, not included with the lift.

Checking the slab, circuit, air line and ceiling is the buyer's responsibility. Ask us first; a floor problem found before the order is a phone call, and after delivery it is a crane.

Receiving day: the crate weight and the bay length are both contested

Two numbers on this page are the ones you would act on before the truck books in, and they are the two Atlas's own current specification disagrees with. Atlas states a heavier shipping weight than the figure in the table below — twice on its own page, in the feature list and again in the specifications — and it publishes a longer overall length with the approach ramps fitted than this listing does. We cannot reconcile either pair from what we hold, so we assert neither.

Both are the practical kind of unsettled. Crate weight is what you hire a forklift against, and a machine heavier than the equipment booked to receive it goes home on the trailer. Ramps-out length is what you chalk on the slab to see whether the bay swallows the rack. Ask us for the current factory shipping weight and ramps-out length in writing before you order the lift or book the equipment to unload it. Then chalk the confirmed length on the floor, walk it end to end, and check a door still opens at each end — the last cheap moment in the purchase.

The control panel and the power unit are one box, and that is on purpose

The 220 volt single phase electric/hydraulic power unit lives inside the metal control panel enclosure, and the panel is separate from the lift so it can stand wherever the operator does. So the power unit is not exposed in the middle of the bay collecting knocks and dirt, and the push-button controls end up somewhere sensible rather than wherever the structure happened to put them.

The air-actuated lock system engages and disengages automatically as the lift travels, so the operator is not choosing when the locks are set. With the lowering interlock above and 19 locking positions to park at, the safety behaviour is largely automatic rather than remembered. An emergency manual pump lowers the lift if the power unit will not run — the feature nobody thinks about until the afternoon they need it.

Built for alignment, useful for everything else

The alignment hardware is on the lift rather than added to it: built-in slip plates, alignment turntables and turntable covers. The covers are why this rack is not a single-purpose machine — pull the turntables, drop the covers in, and it is a flat, open-centre service platform for brakes, exhaust and general work. That flexibility is the difference between a bay that earns every day and one that earns on alignment days.

A full frame runs underneath the scissor mechanism for stability, the platforms are specified for precise levelling accuracy, and the open-centre design keeps the underside reachable. The finish is a durable powder coat rather than paint — on a machine that will have jack stands, tools and wheels dragged across it for a decade, that is a maintenance decision, not a cosmetic one.

Adding wheels-free lifting later

The 12ASL has welded rails on the inside of the runways, which exist for one reason: to accept a rolling jack. So the lift can be bought now as an alignment and service rack and gain wheels-off capability later, without replacing it or modifying the runways.

The 12ASL is CE certified, which is what its own feature list claims and all this page claims. Be clear what that document is: a European conformity marking is a manufacturer's declaration against European directives. It is not a North American third-party lift safety listing and does not stand in for one. Some insurers, fleet policies and local jurisdictions require that separate listing by name. If yours might, check before you order and ask us.

Shipping and delivery

Freight only, lower 48. This page puts the crate at 5,000 lbs and Atlas states a heavier figure, so size your unloading plan to whichever we confirm: a forklift rated for it, a dock, or terminal collection. Residential delivery carries a residential fee. We quote freight live at checkout rather than printing a figure here, because carrier rates change and a stale number turns into a dispute.

Inspect the crate before signing. Look at the corners, banding and wrap while the driver is still there, and write any damage on the bill of lading. Once you sign a clean BOL you have stated the lift arrived intact, and unwinding that is difficult.

Warranty

Atlas covers the 12ASL 2yr structural and 1yr hydraulic. It is a parts warranty: the component is covered, the labour to fit it is not.

Leave the lift alone until the claim is agreed. Do not disassemble the power unit or the scissor assembly first — photograph it, call us, and let the claim run its course.
