AMGO PRO-12SX: a 12,000 lb four-post whose locks come off on shop air

The specification that changes how this lift is installed is not on the front of the brochure. The PRO-12SX holds its load on mechanical self-locking safety devices, and those locks are released pneumatically, from one control — better than walking the lift and knocking four locks off by hand, but it means a compressed air line has to reach it. Worth knowing before installation day rather than during it.

Around that sit the figures a buyer plans with, and these are not disputed: the runways come down to 6 5/8″, so a low car reaches the ramp without catching; there is 68 1/2″ underneath at full rise, the locks holding at 65 3/8″; and the drive-through opening is 104 3/16″. The platforms adjust steplessly rather than in notches — though the numbers printed for that adjustment are a separate matter, dealt with next.

Two runway figures you should not order against, and three more in dispute

Take the impossible one first. The minimum this page lists for the width between the runways is a single-digit measurement, smaller than a hand span — nothing about a 12,000 lb four-post can be spaced that way, and the same defect shows up on AMGO's other four-post models, which points at a dropped leading digit. The minimum given for the outside edge of the runways is barely wider than the gap printed between them, the same problem in a second row. Both are labelled doubtful below rather than silently repaired: a figure invented by us would be worse than a visibly broken one.

Confirm the runway spacing with us in writing before you order a rolling or bridge jack, a drip tray or any accessory that sits between the runways or straddles them. Those purchases are made against exactly these two numbers.

Three further disagreements are with AMGO rather than with arithmetic. The maker publishes a lighter gross weight than the figure shown here, and names dimension B differently — we call that letter an overall length without ramps, the maker the outside edge of the crossbeams. Then the motor: the spec row rendered here holds a supply voltage where a power rating belongs, while the sheet under it gives a horsepower, as does the maker. Those are not two readings of one fact, so both appear below and neither is presented as the rating. Confirm the motor rating and the supply with us in writing before you have a circuit run. Neither side is called wrong; our figures have been copied unchanged for years.

Will It Fit?

Measure your bay against these before ordering. A four-post that does not fit is a very large item to send back.

  • Floor length. 232 11/16″ overall with ramps; 196 3/4″ without, under the dimension label the maker names differently. Plan for the longer figure — the ramps have to go somewhere.
  • Floor width. 132 1/8″ overall, 118 1/8″ between the columns — the inside figure decides whether a door opens once the vehicle is up.
  • Ceiling. The lift stands 86″. What matters is that plus the tallest vehicle you intend to park on it — take your own roof height and add it to the runway height at full rise.
  • Drive-through. 104 3/16″ between the carriages — just over 104″ of clear opening.
  • Runway spacing — see above. The figures this page carries are contested and two are not physically credible. Do not size a jack or accessory against them unconfirmed.
  • Working height underneath. 68 1/2″ maximum, the locks holding at 65 3/8″. If the plan is to stand upright under a car, measure yourself against the second number — the locks are where the lift rests.
  • Services. A dedicated breaker and a compressed air supply for the lock release, both in place before the lift is stood up. The motor rating and supply are disputed — settle them with us before an electrician is booked.
  • Concrete. The slab thickness and strength required for the anchors are in the installation manual. Read it before you order; if you do not know what your floor is, core it.

Stepless width, and why notches are not good enough

A notched adjustment gives three or four positions and hopes one suits. Stepless adjustment means the platforms stop wherever you leave them, which matters at the extremes: a narrow car wants the runways in far enough that the tyres sit inside the edges, a wide truck wants them out far enough that the wheels are not riding the lips. Centring a tyre is not cosmetic — it keeps the load where the designers assumed. The platforms are non-skid diamond plate, which counts on a lift you drive onto and walk on.

Layered safety rather than a single lock

Three systems back each other up. First, the primary multiple safety locks, mechanical and self-engaging, so the lift rests on steel rather than hydraulic pressure. Second, cable-slack protection, which reacts if a cable goes loose — the failure mode that matters on a cable-driven four-post. Third, the hydraulic cylinder, with high-quality oil seals and a compensation valve, making lowering a controlled descent rather than a drop. Drive is by aircraft-standard cable, which on a four-post carries the vehicle.

Perfect For

  • Mixed fleets and dually trucks, where the spacing that suits one vehicle is wrong for the next.
  • Storage and stacking in a garage with the ceiling for it.
  • Service shops doing brake, exhaust, tyre and undercarriage work where driving on beats arms.
  • Long projects, where a vehicle sits for weeks on mechanical locks, not jack stands.

What is in the crate

  • Four columns and two non-skid diamond platforms
  • Drive-on ramps
  • AMGO ETL certified power unit, standard not optional
  • Mechanical self-locking safety device with air-driven lock release
  • Primary multiple safety locks and cable-slack protection
  • Aircraft-standard drive cables and the hydraulic cylinder with compensation valve

Not supplied: anchors are specified in the manual, and the electrical circuit, air line and slab work are yours. For rolling jacks, drip trays or a caster kit, ask us before you order.

Certification, stated plainly

The claim AMGO makes is specific and worth reading precisely: the power unit is ETL certified as standard — a third-party electrical safety certification. It is not a lift-level listing covering the whole machine, and the product data we hold does not claim one. For a home garage and most independent shops the distinction never arises; it does for some insurance policies, fleet and municipal operations, and jurisdictions whose code names a listing. Find out what your insurer or inspector requires before you order.

Shipping and delivery

The PRO-12SX ships by freight truck within the lower 48, the freight quoted live against your address at checkout. Four columns, two runways and a set of ramps make a long, awkward load, and taking it off the trailer is the receiver's job: a forklift able to handle a runway crate, or a collection from the carrier's terminal. Residential delivery carries a residential fee, applied at checkout.

Inspect before you sign. Look along the runway edges for bends, check the ramps and column ends for crush damage, count the crates against the paperwork, then write what you find on the bill of lading with the driver present and photograph it. Signing clean hands the carrier proof that everything arrived intact.

Warranty

AMGO's warranty covers the structural, hydraulic and electrical parts on separate terms; ask us for the current terms before you buy. Our claims process is at mechanicsuperstore.com/pages/warranty-claims.

One warning holds for every hydraulic lift regardless of make. If something fails, do not take apart the power unit, a cylinder, a cable assembly or a lock mechanism before a claim is open — a disassembled component is treated as a modified one. Photograph the fault, note the serial number, and call us first.
