AMGO OH-12S: a 12,000 lb overhead lift that is built to your ceiling, not the other way round

Almost every overhead two-post lift arrives at one fixed height. You either have the roof for it or you do not, and there is no negotiating afterwards. The OH-12S is the exception in AMGO's range, and it is why the word Short sits in the model name: the columns and the overhead beam go together at three different overall heights - 143 1/8″, 155 1/8″ or 167 1/8″ - and which one you get is decided at installation, not on the order form.

That single design choice is the whole argument for this lift. A shop that could never take a 12,000 lb overhead lift because of a low roof line, a sectional door track or a run of ductwork can very often take this one on its lowest setting. Everything else about the OH-12S is full-size heavy equipment: 12,000 lbs (5,443 kg) of capacity, four three-stage arms, automatic arm restraints and a single-point release that frees both columns from one handle.

Will It Fit?

This is the section that decides the purchase, and every figure below is one you should measure against your own building before you order. We cannot see your bay, and a lift that does not fit is a lift on a return truck.

  • Ceiling. The three build heights are 143 1/8″, 155 1/8″ and 167 1/8″ to the top of the overhead beam. Measure to the lowest obstruction over the bay - a door track, a light, a heater flue - not to the roof deck, and leave working room above the beam. Tell us your measurement and we will tell you which setting you are ordering.
  • Floor width. 150 3/4″ overall, with 123 1/2″ between the columns. The inside number is the one that governs door swing and whether a technician can still walk down the side of a full-width truck.
  • Drive-through. 109 3/4″ between the carriages. That is the gap the vehicle passes through on its way in, and it is the figure to check against your widest regular customer, mirror to mirror.
  • Lowest pad. 4 1/2″ minimum pad height, which is what lets the arms slide under a low sill without the pad fouling the rocker.
  • Power. 2.0HP at 220V / 60Hz, single phase. That circuit has to exist, on its own breaker, before the lift is stood up. Budget the electrician alongside the lift, not after it.
  • Concrete. The installation manual that ships with the lift states the minimum slab thickness and strength for the anchors. Read it before you order rather than after the crate lands, and if you do not know what your floor is, core it. No lift of this weight class is safe on an unknown slab, on a crack, or across an expansion joint.

Three heights, one lift - and what to ask before you choose

The adjustable overall height is not a marketing line, it is a different column-and-beam assembly for each setting, decided once. Because it is decided once, it is worth a phone call rather than a guess. Published lifting height at the pads is 72 17/32″ without the extension adapters and 81 17/32″ with them, and the locks hold at 70 9/16″ and 79 9/16″ respectively. Maximum rise under the arms is 68″. Work backwards from the job you actually do - and the roof you have may make the choice for you.

Four three-stage arms, and why the third stage matters

All four arms telescope in three stages rather than two. On a short-wheelbase car the arms retract far enough to reach the pinch welds without the pads dangling past them; on a long-wheelbase truck they extend far enough to reach the frame rails. A two-stage arm set forces a compromise at one end of that range, and that compromise is a badly placed pad.

Automatic arm restraints lock each arm in position as the lift rises, so an arm cannot creep or swing once a load is on it. A quiet feature, until someone knocks an arm while positioning a jack.

One handle, both columns

The single-point safety lock release disengages the locks in both columns at the same time from one position. On a lift without it, the operator releases one column, walks around the vehicle and releases the other - which is slower, and which puts a person on the far side of a loaded lift for no good reason. Synchronisation between the carriages runs on aviation-standard cables, and the carriages ride on self-lubricating UHMW polyethylene sliders and bronze bushings. Slider material decides how a two-post ages, and self-lubricating surfaces are what stop one going noisy and sticky in year four.

Perfect For

  • Low-roof commercial bays that have been priced out of a 12,000 lb overhead lift by ceiling height alone. This is the buyer the OH-12S exists for.
  • Truck and van work at the top of the light-duty range, where 12,000 lbs and long arm reach are both needed.
  • General service shops running mixed cars and trucks through one bay all day.
  • Serious home garages where the door track, not the budget, is what has been blocking a proper two-post.

What is in the crate

  • Two columns and the overhead beam, built to the height setting you order
  • Four three-stage arms with automatic arm restraints
  • Single-point safety lock release and the dual lock system
  • Aviation-standard synchronisation cables
  • Detachable foot guard and tool tray

Not in the crate: anchors are specified in the manual rather than supplied as a decided item, the electrical supply is yours, and any slab work is yours. The published lifting heights are quoted both with and without extension adapters - ask us to confirm exactly which adapters ship with your unit before you build a job around the taller figure.

Certification, stated plainly

AMGO markets the OH-12S as CE approved and certified, meeting or exceeding European Standard EN-1493. Read that for precisely what it is and no more. The CE marking is a manufacturer's own declaration of conformity against European directives. It is not the same document as a North American third-party lift safety listing, and it is not a substitute for one. For a home garage, and for a great many independent shops, the difference never comes up. It does come up for some commercial insurance policies, for fleet and municipal operations, and in jurisdictions whose code names a specific listing. Find out what your insurer or your inspector actually requires before you order, not after two columns are anchored to your floor.

Shipping and delivery

The OH-12S moves by freight truck to addresses in the lower 48, and the freight is quoted live against your address when you check out rather than estimated in advance. Two columns and an overhead beam make a long, top-heavy crated load, and unloading is the receiver's job: a forklift with the capacity and reach for it, or a booked collection from the carrier's local terminal, which already has the machine and the dock. Delivery to a residential address carries a residential fee, added at checkout when you select it.

Inspect before you sign. Walk the crate for bent column ends, crushed corners, a damaged beam, missing banding and any trace of hydraulic oil, write what you find on the bill of lading while the driver is still there, and photograph it. A clean signature is the carrier's proof that the load arrived intact.

Warranty

The OH-12S carries AMGO's 5-3-2 policy: five years on the steel structure, three years on hydraulic parts and two years on electrical components. Our claims process is set out at mechanicsuperstore.com/pages/warranty-claims.

One warning applies to every hydraulic lift regardless of make. If something fails, do not take apart the power unit, a cylinder, a cable assembly or a lock mechanism before a claim is open. A disassembled component is normally treated as a modified one, and that is the fastest way to lose cover you were otherwise entitled to. Photograph the fault, note the serial number off the column, and call us first.
