AMGO AX-12: 12,000 lbs held by two locks that fail in different ways

The AX-12 is the general-service member of AMGO's X-scissor family, and the thing worth knowing first about it is not a dimension — it is how it keeps a vehicle in the air. The AX-12 holds a raised load with both a hydraulic and a mechanical locking system. Those are not two versions of one idea. They are two mechanisms with nothing in common except the job, and that is precisely the point of having both.

Everything else is the part that does the lifting, and it is the same structure the rest of the range uses: robust X-scissors built from 5 7/8″ x 3″ tube, a 75-second cycle, a 2.0 HP power unit, non-skid platforms and a service shelf. What the AX-12 leaves out is the alignment geometry its stablemates carry — so if alignment is not on your job sheet, you are not paying for the hardware that makes it possible.

Two kinds of lock, not one

Hydraulic holding depends on fluid staying where it is put — on seals, on valves, on hose integrity. Mechanical locking depends on steel engaging steel, and it does not care what the hydraulic system is doing. A lift with only one of the two has a single class of failure to think about. A lift with both has to lose two independent systems in the same moment before the platform moves, and that is a materially different proposition when a technician's head is under the vehicle.

It is also the reason to think about how you leave a car overnight. Raise it, let it settle onto the mechanical locks, and the load is carried by steel until morning rather than by pressure holding station in the dark.

The X-scissor structure

The scissor arms are made from 5 7/8″ x 3″ tube, and AMGO prints that figure rather than describing the structure in adjectives. It is worth caring about because a scissor lift's behaviour under load is decided almost entirely by its arms: how level the two runways stay relative to one another, how much the deck moves when someone leans hard into a wheel, and how much of that is still true after several thousand cycles.

The runways are non-skid platforms — a traction decision for the driver bringing a wet vehicle up the ramps as much as a wear one — and the lift includes a service shelf, which sounds minor until you have spent a morning putting sockets and calipers on the floor because there was nowhere else to put them.

Will It Fit?

• Floor length. Overall length with the ramps is 267 1/16″, on a runway length of 197 9/16″. Approach room in front of the ramps is extra, and a lift you have to shunt onto is a lift technicians work around.
• Floor width. 90 1/8″ overall, with 40 15/16″ between the runways.
• Ceiling. Maximum lifting height is 72 13/16″, with a maximum lock height of 71 1/16″. Your usable height has to clear that plus the tallest vehicle you plan to raise, measured to the lowest fitting hanging from the roof rather than to the roof itself.
• Drive-on height. 12 3/16″ at its lowest — the number to check against a low front lip or an aftermarket splitter before you order.
• Power. A 2.0 HP unit. Supply voltage, breaker size and disconnect are given in the manual supplied with the lift and linked further down this page. Have a licensed electrician confirm all three for your building before delivery day, not on it.
• Floor. AMGO states the required slab depth and strength in that same manual, and meeting it — including any coring or repour — is the buyer's responsibility. We cannot assess your concrete from here, and no product page is a substitute for reading the manual against your own slab.

Which one should you buy?

This range has an alignment version, and the honest advice is short. If alignment work is on your job sheet now, or you expect it to be within a couple of years, buy the alignment model — its published wheelbase window and turnplate provision are the parts you cannot add later. If your work is brakes, exhausts, tyres, suspension, inspection and general repair, the AX-12 does that work on a smaller purchase and less installed structure. Neither answer is a compromise; they are different jobs.

One figure on this page is in dispute

This listing gives the AX-12's gross weight as 4,934 lbs. The manufacturer's current published specification gives a lower gross weight. We have not reconciled the two, and rather than quietly pick one we would rather say so: we are not asserting either number here.

It makes no difference to how the lift works. It makes a real difference to what you book for delivery day and to how the freight is rated, so if you are hiring a forklift, a telehandler or a terminal collection to receive this lift, ask us to confirm the shipping weight in writing before you book it.

Certification, Stated Honestly

AMGO's data for the AX-12 does not claim a third-party safety listing for the lift, and we are not going to put a badge on this page that the product data does not support.

Whether that matters depends on your circumstances rather than on the lift. Some shop insurers, some fleet contracts and some local jurisdictions will only insure or sign off equipment that carries a third-party safety listing from a recognised North American body. If that applies to you, treat it as a real requirement: ask whoever imposes it to name the listing in writing, then speak to us before you order so we can check the position for this model with AMGO. That question is cheap to answer beforehand and expensive to discover at an inspection.

Shipping and Delivery

Freight only, lower 48 states, and it ships as more than one package — AMGO's packing data lists a long crate for the rack and a separate carton for the control cabinet. Check both off against the packing list before the driver leaves your site.

Unloading is your responsibility to arrange, and this is a heavy machine: a forklift with capacity to spare, a telehandler or an overhead crane. The delivering driver will not unload it and carries no equipment to do so. Where a site cannot manage it, terminal pickup lets you collect with your own gear on your own schedule, and warehouse pickup is available where offered. Since the gross weight is the figure in dispute above, give yourself margin on whatever you hire.

Inspect before you sign. Walk the crates, count the pieces, photograph any crush, bend or gouge, and write the damage onto the bill of lading while the driver is still standing there. Signing a clean bill of lading is the carrier's evidence that the freight arrived intact, and a claim opened afterwards starts from behind.

Delivery to a residential address carries a residential fee. Freight is quoted live at checkout against your ZIP code, so the figure you see is your own lane on the day rather than an estimate that will move.
