Description
-Atlas Platinum PWB90XL 3D Video Wheel Balancer with Laser Line
Two things on this balancer replace the parts of the job that depend on the operator being careful. The rim width is measured by touchless sonar instead of the old-fashioned measuring arm you drag across the rim, and after the spin a laser line projects onto the wheel to put you back on the exact weight position you chose. Between them they remove the two places where a good technician still loses a balance: a mis-read width, and a weight applied a few degrees off where the machine calculated it.
The PWB90XL is the top of the Atlas Platinum balancer range, built with Italian engineering and components, with a high-resolution video display and Super Automatic 3D data entry from a single gauge for offset and diameter.
Will It Fit?
This is one of the easier machines in a shop to site, and one specification is the reason why.
- No anchoring. The PWB90XL needs no anchor-down installation. It does not have to be bolted to the slab, which means it can be positioned, repositioned, or moved to a different bay without drilling anything.
- Power. 110 volt supply. An ordinary single-phase outlet.
- Delivery. 290 lbs shipping weight.
- Wheel envelope. Rims from 10" to 30" diameter and 1 1/2" to 20" wide, up to a 43" tire diameter, with a maximum wheel weight of 165 lbs.
Confirming your outlet, your bench or floor space and the route in is the customer's responsibility. The shaft is 40mm, which is the figure to check against any cones, adapters or flange plates you already own.
The Laser Line: Why It Changes the Result, Not Just the Speed
On a conventional balancer the machine tells you where the weight goes, then you rotate the wheel by hand to what you believe is that spot and stick it on. Everything after the spin depends on human judgment, and small angular errors on a heavy weight produce exactly the residual imbalance the machine was meant to eliminate.
The PWB90XL projects a laser line onto the wheel at the calculated position. The weight goes where the line is. That is the whole idea, and it is why first-time zero/zero results become the normal outcome rather than the good day. The machine resolves weight position to 1.4 degrees and reads to an accuracy of 1 gram, which is only meaningful if the operator can actually hit the position the machine calculated — hence the laser.
The weight-placement arm lets the operator choose the most convenient location to apply weights in the first place, rather than accepting whatever the machine's default plane happens to be, and an LED lamp illuminates the wheel interior so you can see what you are doing behind a spoke.
The Software That Earns Its Keep
Three programs on this machine solve problems that otherwise get solved with more weight:
- FES (Fast & Easy Split). Splits an adhesive weight into two and hides both behind the spokes, so a corrective weight does not sit visibly on a finished alloy.
- OWF / OPF (Opposite Weight / Opposite Position). Moves the weight application position from twelve o'clock to six o'clock, so adhesive weights go on at the bottom of the wheel where you can reach and press them properly.
- OPTIMATCH. Match mounting — optimising tire and wheel imbalance against each other by repositioning the tire on the rim. On a genuinely difficult assembly this reduces the amount of corrective weight needed instead of just calculating more of it.
Alongside those are the ALU-S and other ALU programs for alloy weight placements, static and dynamic modes, an NWN (no wheel need) system, self-diagnosis and self-calibration, and a USB hub so firmware updates come from a PC or notebook rather than a service visit.
Perfect For
- Tire specialists where balance quality is the product and comebacks are the cost.
- Dealership service departments working on factory alloys where a visible weight is a complaint.
- Performance and wheel shops running wide, heavy, expensive assemblies.
- Mobile operators and shops that reconfigure — no anchoring means the machine is not tied to one square metre of floor forever.
What's in the Box
- Plastic quick-release nut
- Four centering cones
- Wheel weight pliers
- Measuring calipers
One honest note on the cones: Atlas does not publish the individual cone diameters for this set, and we are not going to invent them. The set is the standard passenger and light-truck complement. If you regularly balance an unusual centre bore — heavy-duty light truck, some European fitments, or aftermarket wheels with a non-standard hub — ask us to confirm cone coverage before you order. A balancer whose cones do not fit your wheels is not a balancer, and this is a five-minute question to settle in advance.

Certification, Stated Plainly
Atlas publishes no independent third-party safety listing for this balancer and we are not going to imply one. The difference is between an outside laboratory testing a design and auditing the plant that builds it, and a manufacturer stating conformity itself; this machine is sold on the manufacturer's own specification.
For nearly every buyer of a wheel balancer this is not a live issue — the listing schemes that matter in this trade were written for vehicle lifts, not for balancing equipment. Where it can surface is with an insurer or a fleet or municipal contract that asks for documentation on powered shop equipment generally. If you have that requirement, ask before ordering and we will send you whatever the manufacturer publishes.
Shipping and Delivery
Delivered by freight carrier within the lower 48. Freight is quoted live at checkout for your exact destination, so the figure is specific to your address rather than a national average.
Freight is curbside by nature: the truck arrives, and unloading is on you. Have a forklift, a loading dock or enough hands and equipment arranged before delivery day, or select terminal pickup and collect the crate yourself. If it is going to a house rather than a commercial address, residential delivery is available and carries a residential fee.
Check the crate over before you sign for it. Photograph anything that looks wrong, write the damage onto the bill of lading in front of the driver, and keep your copy. That written note is what makes a claim straightforward instead of a fight.
Warranty
The PWB90XL is covered for 2 years, parts only. The part is supplied; the labour to fit it is yours. On a machine that self-calibrates and takes firmware over USB, a good proportion of what would otherwise be a service call is resolved without one — run the self-diagnosis and the calibration routine before you conclude anything is faulty, because a machine that has been knocked or moved will often simply need recalibrating.
If it is a genuine fault: leave it assembled. Photograph the fault and the error the machine reports, note the wheel and the program in use when it happened, and call us before anything is opened up. A part that arrives dismantled has lost the evidence the claim rests on. Atlas keeps replacement parts and wear items in stock for the Platinum range, so most outcomes here are a parts order rather than a machine out of action.
