Schulz 580VV20X-3: 650 lbs of cast iron and steel, with an after-cooler fitted

Two things separate this machine from the rest of the Schulz V-Series shelf. It weighs 650 lbs, which is the most metal of any 80-gallon unit in this group, and its specification sheet lists an after-cooler as standard — a line that reads No on almost every sibling model. It is a three-phase, 5 HP, two-stage machine rated to 175 PSI on an upright 80-gallon ASME receiver.

Before the features, one thing to settle, because it affects how you plan the install.

Two figures to settle before you plan the install

Published figures for this model differ on two points. Both sets are below, each attributed to its source.

The dimension gap is large enough to matter: one set describes a machine that fits a narrow alcove, the other a noticeably wider crate. The voltage difference is the difference between a motor that can be configured for a lower supply and one that needs 460V, which changes whether a transformer appears on your electrician's quote.

Two things you can do about it. For space, plan against the larger figures: a bay that accommodates the bigger set accommodates either, so you cannot be caught out. For voltage, confirm the motor's nameplate rating with us in writing before you order and we will take it straight from Schulz. Both sources agree it is a three-phase machine and both list 460V; what differs is whether anything lower is available.

650 lbs is a specification, not a shipping inconvenience

Weight is the number buyers skip, and on a compressor it is a telling one. A reciprocating pump is a machine trying to shake itself apart several times a second: pistons reversing, valves slamming, a crankshaft loaded and unloaded every revolution. Mass absorbs that. A heavy cast iron block on a substantial base turns vibration into heat and noise instead of fatigue at the mounts, the fittings and the tank welds.

Iron does a second job at once. It conducts heat far better than the aluminium used in lighter pumps, so it pulls heat out of the cylinder walls and hands it to the fins rather than holding it where the oil film lives. Cooler oil keeps its film strength and does not varnish the rings. Nearly everything that kills a compressor pump traces back to heat, and mass is one way this one refuses to hold on to it. The after-cooler earns its keep downstream

Air leaves a two-stage pump hot and carrying water vapour. Where the after-cooler changes things is not really inside the compressor — it is everywhere after it.

By dropping discharge temperature before the air reaches the tank, it causes a large share of that moisture to condense at the receiver, where the drain is, instead of travelling into your pipework as hot wet air and condensing wherever the line happens to be coolest. That matters because the things downstream are the things you care about: filter elements that load up with water, regulators that hunt, air tools rusting from the inside, and finish work ruined by a slug of water arriving at the gun in the middle of a panel.

Be clear about the limit. This is not a dryer — the sheet lists no air dryer, and if you need genuinely dry air for painting or instrumentation you still need one. An after-cooler makes that dryer's job smaller, and on a machine with no dryer at all it moves most of the water to the one point in the system designed to get rid of it.

Will It Fit?

• Floor and height: use the larger of the two published sets — 48 inches by 42 inches on plan and 81 inches tall — and you are safe whichever proves correct. Measure to the lowest obstruction above the intended position, not to the ceiling.
• Access: whichever set is right, leave room to reach the tank drain and the belt guard. A drain you cannot get to is a drain that never gets opened, and standing water is what corrodes a receiver from the inside.
• Weight: 650 lbs on an upright base is a concentrated load. Schulz publishes no minimum slab thickness or concrete rating for this model and we will not invent one; on a poured commercial floor it is routine, on a suspended floor it deserves a professional opinion first.
• Power: three phase — settle the voltage question above before any wiring is quoted. Amp draw and breaker size are not published; the recommended-breaker field says consult a certified electrician, which is the only defensible answer.
• Plumbing: a 1/2-inch tank outlet. Size the downstream run for the flow you intend to draw.

Confirming the space, the floor and the supply is the buyer's responsibility before ordering.

ASME is the certification recorded for this compressor, covering the air receiver and its safety valve. It is a pressure-vessel standard and it is the right one to demand on the component that stores the energy — a tank failure is the one failure mode on a compressor with no recovery.

The boundary is worth naming rather than blurring. It is not an electrical safety listing and it does not certify the assembled machine or its control gear. On a fixed three-phase installation that question gets asked more often, by insurers and by facilities standards. Ask us before ordering and we will confirm in writing what this unit carries.

Freight only, to the lower 48 states, quoted live at checkout against your delivery address rather than from a stale table.

This is the heavy one in the range, so plan the unload properly. At 650 lbs crated it is a forklift or a heavy-duty pallet jack on a solid surface — not a tail-lift-and-hope job, and not something a driver will move for you. If you have no dock or forklift, take terminal pickup and bring a trailer. Residential delivery is offered and carries a fee, shown at checkout. Walk the crate with the driver and write any damage onto the bill of lading before signing; a clean signature is very hard to reopen.

Warranty

Schulz covers this unit for 1 year and its pump for 2 years. Keep the invoice and note the date it entered service.
