Product Description

TOPDON TC001 Thermal Imaging Camera for Android and Windows

TOPDON says something about the TC001 that most accessory makers leave for the reviews to discover: it will not clear every phone or tablet case, and an extension cable is supplied so you can use it anyway. That is a small piece of honesty and it tells you how to plan. If your handset lives in a thick rugged case, you are not going to be plugging the sensor flush into the port and waving the phone about — you will be running it on the lead, which frankly is the better way to work anyway.

The TC001 is a thermal imaging sensor that turns an Android phone or tablet into a working thermal camera through the USB-C port. It also runs on Windows tablets and laptops via TOPDON's TCView software, which is a genuinely different proposition from a phone-only attachment — the same sensor can go from a pocket on a site walk to a laptop on a desk for reporting.

What you can see with it

The detector is 256 x 192 pixels with a 12µm pixel pitch, operating across the 8 to 14µm long-wave band. In practice the pitch is what decides whether two adjacent warm things read as two warm things: individual terminals in a distribution board, individual cells in a pack, individual runs in a floor. Thermal sensitivity is quoted at under 40 mK, which is the figure that lets a camera pick out a fraction-of-a-degree difference — and fraction-of-a-degree differences are what missing insulation, a damp patch and an early-stage bad joint actually look like.

The refresh rate is 25 Hz, fast enough that scanning a ceiling or an engine bay gives a live picture rather than a series of stills you have to interpret.

Measuring range and what the tolerance means

Coverage runs from -20 to 150°C (-4 to 302°F) and from 150 to 550°C (302 to 1022°F), published as two bands. Nearly all inspection work happens in the lower band; the upper band is there for exhaust work, industrial process temperatures and anything actively glowing.

TOPDON quotes the tolerance as ±3.6°F (2°C), or 2% of the maximum temperature, with values resolved to 0.1°C. Worth reading carefully: a 2% tolerance is a much bigger absolute figure near the top of the upper band than it is at room temperature. Thermal imaging earns its keep on comparison rather than absolute truth — this joint is warmer than its three neighbours, this section of wall is colder than the rest — and for that kind of work the specification is comfortably good enough.

It runs on your device's battery, and barely touches it

There is no separate power source. The TC001 draws its supply from the host phone, tablet or laptop, at a stated 0.35 W. Nothing to charge, nothing flat in the van, no proprietary cell to source in three years' time. The sensor itself weighs 30 grams and the body measures 71 x 42 x 14 mm — 0.55 inches at its thinnest dimension — so it genuinely lives in a pocket rather than in a case in the vehicle.

The supplied lead is 50 cm (19.69"). Beyond the case-clearance problem it solves, that length is what lets you push the sensor into a ceiling void, behind a panel, into a cabinet or under a car while you read the screen from a position where you can actually see it and are not putting your hands anywhere warm.

Plug in and read: no account needed

Basic temperature reading works out of the box with no registration. That is worth more than it sounds if the tool is going to be shared between people on a crew, or handed to a subcontractor, or used once a month — a login you have forgotten is the reason equipment sits in a drawer.

Image enhancement that changes what you find

Ten colour palettes are available. Palette choice is not cosmetic: one that spreads its contrast across a narrow band will reveal a marginal difference that a full-spectrum palette flattens into sameness, and the reverse is true when you need to see a wide range at once. Sharpness and contrast are adjustable on top of that, and picture-in-picture overlays the thermal image with the visible scene, which is what makes a report image legible to somebody who was not standing there.

Setting your own limits, and watching change over time

The DIY range setting lets you define upper and lower temperature limits of your own. Anything outside them recolours on screen, so the camera flags an exceedance rather than asking you to read and interpret numbers while balanced on a ladder.

The app will also take continuous readings across a period and store them, then report the high, low and average and plot them as a waveform. That converts a snapshot into evidence. A warm bearing tells you very little; a bearing whose temperature climbs steadily over twenty minutes of running tells you what to quote for.

Perfect for

  • Home inspectors documenting insulation gaps, air leakage and moisture without opening finishes.
  • HVAC technicians checking coils, ducting and line temperatures on site.
  • Electricians surveying panels, terminations and cable runs under load.
  • Automotive technicians comparing cylinders, catching a dragging brake or finding a blocked heater core.
  • Farmers and growers checking livestock and crops at a distance, with no contact.
  • Security and facilities work, where seeing heat in the dark is the whole point.

What's in the box

Our product information confirms the sensor and the extension cable — TOPDON specifically notes the cable is there for cases that do not clear. It does not itemise the rest of the carton, so we are not going to publish a packing list we cannot stand behind. Ask us before ordering if a specific item matters.

Compatibility, honestly

Two caveats belong on the page rather than in a support ticket. First, TOPDON states the TC001 is not compatible with every style of phone or tablet case, which is why the extension cable ships with it. Check your own case before you plan to use the sensor plugged in directly. Second, this is the Android and Windows version. If your device is an iPhone or an iPad, this is the wrong model and you want the iOS variant instead — ask us and we will point you at it.

Calibration, stated plainly

The accuracy figures above are TOPDON's own specification. Our product data records no traceable calibration certificate supplied with the camera and no independent instrument listing, and we are not going to imply either exists. If you report under a quality system, an insurer's requirement or a code inspection that demands traceably calibrated measuring equipment, confirm that requirement before purchase and ask us what documentation is available.

Shipping

This is a small parcel shipment to the lower 48 states. Look the carton over while the driver is still there and record any damage on the delivery paperwork at that moment, because a clean signature is difficult to undo afterwards. Residential delivery may add a fee; your shipping cost is calculated at checkout.

Warranty

The manufacturer's warranty applies, and our warranty claims page covers how to start a claim with us. Do not open the sensor housing or re-terminate the connector before the claim is raised. On a sealed instrument, disassembly is the single most reliable way to lose a claim you would otherwise have won.
