Will It Fit?

An 11,000 lb two-post arrives on a truck whether or not the building suits it, so measure before you order. Every figure below is Triumph's, and checking them against your own bay is your responsibility.

• Ceiling. The lift stands 145 inches overall, plus room for the tallest vehicle you intend to raise. Check lighting, ductwork and sprinkler heads in the swing of the arms, not just the height at the centre of the bay.
• Floor width. 145 inches overall, with 118 inches between the posts. Add door-opening room on at least one side, or every vehicle on the lift becomes a climb-out through the passenger seat.
• Drive-through. 108 inches, which is 9 ft of clear width between the carriages. That is the number that decides whether a dual-rear-wheel pickup or a work van goes in without a five-point turn in your own shop.
• Reach. The pads lift to 72 inches — 6 ft, which puts most undercarriages at chest height rather than over your head — and there is 68 inches of rise under the arms themselves.
• Loading. Lowered arm height is 4.5 inches, so a low car goes over the arms without a run-up or a stack of timber.
• Concrete. A 4-inch slab at 3,000 PSI, and it is not negotiable — an anchor is only as good as what it is set into. If you do not know what your slab is, core it or ask the builder before delivery.
• Power. 220V for the 3 HP motor. Book the electrician before the lift arrives.

Why the release mechanism is the feature to compare

Every two-post lift holds a vehicle on mechanical locks rather than on hydraulic pressure — that is what makes it safe to stand under. What differs is the ritual of getting off those locks. On the NTO-11A a single release handles both columns, so the sequence is raise slightly, release, lower, with no walking round a loaded lift to reach a second lever. A release that stays out of the routine is a release nobody starts skipping, which is a safety argument that happens to look like a time saving. The electric safety cutoff is the other half of it: carriage travel stops at the top of its range rather than relying on an operator watching the column.

Asymmetric arms and an overhead crossbar

The arms are asymmetric: the front pair are shorter than the rear pair and the columns are rotated, so a vehicle sits further back than it would on a symmetric machine. The practical result is that the doors clear the columns and you can open them properly to get in and out of a car already in the air — the most common frustration with a cheap symmetric lift. The overhead style keeps the floor between the columns clear of a base plate, so a transmission jack, an oil drain and a creeper roll straight through, and the crossbar carries the hydraulic lines and equalisation cables up out of the working area.

Underfoot, each column sits on a base plate of 18 x 20 inches, spreading the anchor load across more of the slab — quietly the hardest-working part of the whole installation.

Two practical points decide whether the delivery day is uneventful. The first is unloading: somebody at the receiving end has to get the crate off the back of the truck. A forklift, a tractor with forks, or a telehandler will do it. If none of that is available to you, choose warehouse pickup instead and collect the crate on a trailer, because the freight terminal has the equipment to load you. The second is the address type. A delivery to a home is handled differently from a delivery to a commercial address and carries a residential fee, so tell us which one it is when you order rather than sorting it out on the doorstep.

Inspect the shipment before you sign for it. Walk the crate, look for punctures, crushed corners and shifted banding, and write what you find on the bill of lading while the driver is still there. A clean signature is the carrier's evidence that everything arrived intact, and it is very hard to argue with afterwards. Photographs taken at the tailgate are worth far more than photographs taken in the garage an hour later.
