Hofmann 14K Scissor Alignment Lift — 14,000 lb Capacity

One line on this lift's specification separates it from every other alignment scissor on the market: it is approved for use in Class 1 Division 1 environments, in both the surface-mount and the flush-mount version. That is a hazardous-location classification — the category used for areas where ignitable vapours can be present in normal operation — and it means the electrical and lighting components on this lift are rated to live in a bay where solvent, fuel or paint vapour is part of daily work. Most alignment lifts are not.

Everything else about the 14K follows from a shop that works that way: a 14,000 lbs capacity, four cross-aligned hydraulic cylinders, and a lighting system whose defining feature is that it cuts its own power when a technician is in the hazard zone.

Lighting that turns itself off

The Locked and Lighted configuration puts LEDs where the technician actually needs to see. Front LEDs sit in the turnplate base rather than overhead, so they illuminate the adjustment area regardless of how wide the vehicle's wheel track is — a fixed overhead lamp lights a fixed spot; a lamp in the turnplate base follows the wheel. Rear LEDs are positioned on the rear slip plates for the same reason. Hofmann holds a patent on the mounting position, and the point of it is viewing angle: light that arrives from where you are looking, not from behind your head.

The second patented feature is the one that matters for the hazardous-location approval. The lights switch themselves on and off automatically, and the arrangement is designed so that there is no power present when the lift is being operated in the hazard zone. On a conventional lift that is a procedural rule someone has to remember; here it is a property of the machine.

Four cylinders, cross-aligned, with the failure path planned

The 14K lifts on four hydraulic cylinders arranged in a cross-aligned pattern rather than as two independent pairs. Cross-aligning them means a single circuit feeds diagonally opposite corners, so the load is shared across the platform instead of being carried by one side. On top of that sits a redundant hydraulic safety system with cross-aligned circuits — a second, independent path — and flow-sensing valves inside the control circuit that react to a sudden change in flow, which is what a hose failure looks like hydraulically.

Holding is mechanical, not hydraulic: the lift locks on a mechanical rack and the locks are released pneumatically from the control console. Hydraulics raise the lift; steel holds it up. Locking components are made from corrosion-resistant material, which matters more than it sounds in a bay where the floor gets washed.

The jack beam and the slip plates

The rolling jack beam on this generation was redesigned around three things: extended-reach lifting arms, a higher lifting stroke, and a low drive-over height so it is not an obstacle when it is not in use. It collapses and retracts inside the runways entirely, which is what keeps a wheel-free jack from getting in the way of the alignment it is supposed to help with. The jack rides on a proven roller system with a half-inch diameter roller shaft carrying the load, and high-quality springs let the jack settle onto the rail rather than fighting it. Arm pads are urethane with a steel lip.

At the back, the rear slip plates use oversized encapsulated bearings that roll upward, so the bearing surface is protected from the grit and washwater that destroy exposed slip plates. Locking those plates is done from the lift console rather than by walking to each corner and resetting a pin — a small thing that adds up across a day of alignments. The approach ramps carry end sliders, which cut ramp noise and stop the ramp chewing up the floor as it moves.

Will It Fit?

An alignment lift is a building decision. Measure before you order.

Overall length 271"
Overall width 95"
Runway width 26"
Width between runways 38"
Lifting height 72"
Weight 5,490 lbs
Capacity 14,000 lbs
Motor 3 HP
Power supply 230 VAC, 1 Ph, 60 Hz
Air supply up to 120 PSI
4-wheel alignment wheelbase up to 155"
2-wheel alignment wheelbase 180"
Service wheelbase 194"

Two points worth pulling out. The maximum lift height is adjustable, which is specifically there to suit a building with a low ceiling — if headroom is your constraint, this is the lift feature to ask us about. And the scissor format is compact by design: the manufacturer's own comparison is that up to five of these fit the operating space of four four-post lifts, which is the argument for a scissor if your floor plan is fixed.

The lift needs both a dedicated electrical supply and shop air, and both have to be in place and inspected before installation day. Site preparation, the concrete, the electrical supply and any permit your jurisdiction requires are the customer's responsibility — ask us for the installation documents early if you are laying a new floor or converting a bay.

Perfect For

  • A shop that does alignments and body or paint work in the same building — the hazardous-location approval is the reason this lift exists.
  • A high-volume alignment bay where console-operated slip plate locking and lit adjustment areas cut minutes off every job.
  • A fleet or municipal facility needing 14,000 lbs of capacity and a documented safety standard.
  • A shop with a fixed floor plan that cannot give up the space a four-post alignment lift needs.

Certification

This is the part of the page where a lot of dealers get vague, so plainly: all models in this line have been tested and validated by an independent third party to the ANSI/ALI automotive lift standard, ALCTV-2011. That is a third-party validation against a published standard, not a manufacturer's self-declaration, and it is the document an insurer or a workplace inspector normally asks to see. It is claimed by the manufacturer for this line, and we are repeating it as they state it. If your insurer or jurisdiction requires a specific listing or a current certificate, ask us and we will get you the paperwork rather than a reassurance.

One figure to confirm with us

Our own records disagree about how long this lift takes to raise. The manufacturer's specification list gives one lifting speed and the older meta description on this page gives another. It is a small difference and it changes nothing structural, but we are not going to publish a number we cannot reconcile. Ask us and we will confirm it from the factory sheet.

Shipping and delivery

All Hofmann machines come with free delivery, setup, and instruction, as stated in the Pick Up and Delivery section on this page — this is not a lift that arrives on a pallet for you to work out. Delivery is within the lower 48 states.

What is on you is the site: a level, sound floor, the electrical supply, the compressed air, and clear access for the delivery vehicle and for the installers. Talk to us about site readiness before the delivery is scheduled, because a machine that arrives before the bay is ready is a machine sitting in the way. When the shipment does arrive, inspect it before signing and note any damage on the delivery paperwork at the time — that note is what a freight claim depends on.

Warranty

Warranty terms for this machine are published on our warranty claims page. Read the terms themselves rather than a summary. Whatever they say, do not have anyone disassemble the power unit, the cylinders, the lock mechanism or the lighting before you have spoken to us — equipment that has already been opened is far harder to claim on, and on a lift with a hazardous-location approval, unauthorised work on the electrical system can invalidate that approval outright.
