Challenger 44050E Heavy-Duty 4-Post Chain-Driven Lift

Challenger's heavy four-post range spans 30,000 lb to 60,000 lb of capacity and 310″ to 430″ of maximum wheelbase. The 44050E sits in the middle of both scales: 50,000 lbs over a 370″ wheelbase, in a lift roughly 41 ft long. That combination is not a compromise so much as the configuration most heavy shops actually turn out to need, and this page is mostly about how to check whether it is the one you need.

Buying Capacity Honestly

The instinct is to buy the biggest number affordable, on the grounds that headroom in the rating must be safety. It is worth resisting long enough to do the arithmetic: over-specifying costs floor area and building height as well as money, and under-specifying is not fixable.

What matters is the heaviest vehicle you will genuinely put on it at its heaviest realistic loaded weight — not kerb weight, and not the fleet average. A vocational truck can gain several tons between the yard and a job. If that figure sits comfortably under 50,000 lbs, this is the right tier; if not, the 60,000 lb models in the family are the honest answer and we will point you at them. If the constraint is length rather than weight, the 430″ variants exist for that.

Why Four Posts, Not Two

Four-post and two-post lifts are not two prices for the same thing. On a two-post the vehicle is held at four small pickup points on the frame, and choosing them correctly on an unfamiliar heavy chassis is a skilled judgement made every time. On a four-post the vehicle drives onto two runways and stands on its own tires: load spread along the runways and into four columns, no adapters to position, nothing pinched against a frame rail.

For heavy vehicles that changes the character of the work: drive-on takes a fraction of the setup time, tolerates an odd chassis or unfamiliar body, and makes the lift usable for storage and staging as well as service. The trade is that the wheels stay loaded, which is why rolling jacks exist as an option.

Lock Positions and the Working Height

Ten lock positions are provided across the 40K–60K models in this family. That is not a claim about strength; it is a claim about where you get to stand. Few stopping heights force the technician to work at whatever height is nearest, and on a long job the difference between chest height and arms overhead is measured in hours and in shoulders.

Releasing is single-point and air actuated: one control disengages all four column locks at once. It removes a routine task — walking a loaded lift, releasing four locks in turn — of the kind performed thousands of times without incident and then once with one.

Runways, Ramps and Spacing

Runways are 32″ wide and 14″ high, diamond-plated and anti-skid, with diamond-plate approach ramps. Traction on the approach is the point: a truck comes in off a wet yard, and the tire that first meets the ramp is the one carrying the steering. Spacing between the runways is adjustable from 36″ to 58″, narrowing to 43″–53.5″ when rolling jacks are fitted between them.

Lifting is by dual heavy-duty cylinders with lever controls, so power reaches the front and rear of the lift together or separately — useful whenever a body puts most of its mass over one axle group and an evenly-driven lift would have to absorb the difference.

Will It Fit?

Maximum wheelbase is 370″, measured hub centre to hub centre rather than bumper to bumper. Overall length is 41 ft with 350″ between the columns, and overall width is 17 ft 1.25″ with 144″ between the inside faces of the columns.

Overall height is 92″, and maximum rise at the top of the runway is 73″ — your ceiling needs to clear the runway height, the full rise and the tallest vehicle you will raise, with working room above, and it is the lowest fixture in the bay that governs rather than the roof. Listed overall weight is 15,325 lbs.

The motor is listed at 15HP, three-phase, on a supply range topping out at 460V. Three-phase is a requirement here, not a preference, and it is far cheaper to establish that before ordering than after. We hold no concrete thickness or slab strength figure for this model, so ask us for Challenger's foundation specification before slab work is designed or anchors are drilled. Confirming ceiling, floor, slab and supply is the buyer's responsibility, and between them they represent most of what can go wrong on an installation.

What's in the Box

Supplied with the lift: diamond-plate anti-skid runways and approach ramps, the dual-cylinder lifting system with lever controls, the column locks with single-point air-actuated release, and black columns, the only colour listed for this model. Rolling jacks rated from 15,000 lb to 35,000 lb are an option and are not included. If wheel-end, brake or suspension work is part of the plan, order them with the lift — a four-post carries the vehicle on its tires, so without jacks the wheels stay loaded.

Nothing in our data for this lift records an independent third-party safety listing, so we are not going to write that it has one. This is the point on a lift page where a dealer is most tempted to be vague, and being vague is what causes the problem: insurers, fleet safety standards and some local jurisdictions treat a recognised third-party listing as a condition of installing or using a lift, and that is discovered too late surprisingly often.

A shipment listed at 15,325 lbs needs planning before it is booked. The lift arrives as separate heavy components — columns, runways, ramps and the power unit — and taking them off the trailer is the receiver's responsibility, not the driver's: lifting equipment rated for the pieces, somewhere firm to set them down, and room to work without holding the truck on site. If your yard cannot support that, terminal pickup is the alternative. Residential delivery carries a residential fee, applied at checkout when selected.

Inspect before signing, every time. Count the pieces against the manifest, look for bent flanges, gouged plate, damaged ramps or a shifted load, photograph anything doubtful, and write the damage on the bill of lading in plain words. A clean receipt says the goods arrived complete and undamaged, and at this value that is an expensive sentence to retract.

The one instruction we give on every lift: do not dismantle a suspect cylinder, lock or power unit before the claim is open. A component already taken apart cannot be examined for the cause of failure, and manufacturers decline claims on that ground routinely. Photograph the fault, note what the lift was doing, and call us before anyone starts undoing bolts.
