Challenger 44040X — the long-chassis 40,000 lb four-post

Three lifts in this chain-driven family carry 40,000 lb. What makes the 44040X the right one is length: a 430" maximum wheelbase, 410" from column to column, and 46' of floor consumed end to end. It is the version you specify when the problem is not weight but reach — a tandem-axle chassis, a crew-cab with a long body, a bus, a rig whose rear axle sits well behind where a shorter deck ends.

That reach is the whole trade. You are paying for floor space and giving up nothing in capacity, so the buying question is simply whether your building can give up the length. Settle that before anything else on this page.

The bay-length arithmetic

Start with 46'. That is the lift alone. Then add the space a technician needs at each end to walk past a raised deck, the swing of the roll-up door, and enough room in front for the vehicle to line up straight rather than being shunted onto the runways at an angle. Shops that measure only the lift routinely find themselves an aisle short.

Across the bay, the lift measures 17' 1.25" overall, with 144" clear between the inside faces of the columns. Overhead, the columns are 92" and the deck rises to 73" at the top of the runway. Whatever hangs below your ceiling — heaters, lighting, ducting, the door track when it is open — sets your real working height, not the lift.

Slab thickness, concrete strength, the anchor pattern and the electrical supply are the buyer's to arrange and to sign off. This unit takes 230 - 460V three-phase to a 10 HP power unit. Have the circuit, the disconnect and the concrete verified in advance; those three items cause more postponed installs than the lift itself ever does.

Deck, ramps and the jack question

Runways are 32" wide and stand 14" above the floor, with diamond-plate ramps at the approach so a wet tyre still finds grip on the way up. The gap between the runways adjusts from 36" to 58", which covers a narrow-track van at one end and a dual-wheel chassis at the other on the same pair of decks.

If rolling jacks are part of the plan, the usable spacing narrows to 43" - 53.5" once they are fitted. That is the figure to check against the axles you actually lift, because it is the one that governs on the shop floor. Jacks are an option in the 15,000 lb to 35,000 lb range and are ordered separately — they do not arrive in the crate.

Locks you can reach from one place

Column locks stack up the post so the deck can be parked at a comfortable working height instead of only at full rise, and a single air-actuated control releases all four columns at once. On a lift that is 410" between columns, that matters more than it does on a short one: releasing locks column by column across a deck that long is how a runway ends up carrying more than its share.

Level lifting on an unevenly loaded chassis

The chain drive is fed by a hydraulic power unit with lever control, and the front and rear of the lift can be driven together or apart. A truck with a heavy front end — a plough carrier, a service crane, a mixer — does not want to be raised as a single rigid unit; it wants the light end brought up to meet the heavy one. That capability is the reason this design persists in fleet shops rather than being replaced by something simpler.

• Long-wheelbase fleet work — tandem chassis, box trucks and buses that overhang a standard deck.
• Bus and coach maintenance where the axles sit far apart and the body is longer still.
• Truck dealerships needing one bay that will take anything on the lot without a second lift.
• Not a compact shop. If the building cannot spare 46' plus circulation, look at the shorter models in the range instead — the capacity is identical.

Certification — what we can and cannot say

Our product data for the 44040X carries no third-party safety listing, so this page does not claim one. That kind of listing is issued by an independent testing body after the design has been examined; a manufacturer's own declaration is a different document and is not a substitute. Insurers, fleet safety programmes and some local inspection regimes ask for the independent version specifically. If yours does, raise it with us before ordering and we will obtain the current status from Challenger in writing.

Freight only, to the lower 48 states, priced live at checkout for your address rather than quoted in this description. Unloading is on you: a forklift rated for a crate of this size and weight, or a terminal collection you arrange with the carrier. Residential delivery can be arranged and adds a residential fee. Check the shipment against the bill of lading while the driver is still there — mark any damage or shortage on the paperwork, photograph it, and contact us the same day. Signing a clean receipt for a damaged crate closes the claim before it opens.
