Challenger 44040E — 40,000 lb, sized for the wheelbase most shops actually see

Capacity is the easy part of specifying a heavy four-post; almost every model in this chain-driven family will hold more than the truck you had in mind. The hard part is matching deck length to the chassis you see every week without renting a building for the ones you see once a year. The 44040E is that compromise made deliberately: a 370" maximum wheelbase inside a 41' overall footprint, at the full 40,000 lb rating.

It is also the lightest of the 40,000 lb models here at 13,050 lb, which shows up twice — once when the freight is rigged off the truck, and again in what the floor is asked to carry for the next twenty years.

Is 370" enough for your fleet?

Answer that with a tape rather than a spec sheet. Measure centre-of-front-hub to centre-of-rear-hub on the longest chassis you routinely service, then on the longest one you are contracted to service. If both land inside 370", this is the model. If a handful of vehicles run past it, the longer machine in this family is the honest recommendation and we would rather tell you now than after delivery.

Will it fit the building?

• Length. 41' for the lift, before you allow anything for walking the ends or lining a vehicle up straight.
• Width. 17' 1.25" overall, 144" clear between the inside faces of the columns, 350" from column to column along the bay.
• Height. Columns are 92"; the deck reaches 73" at the top of the runway. Your usable headroom is what remains under the lowest thing bolted to your ceiling.

Floor and power are the buyer's responsibility and are worth settling in writing before the order goes in: slab thickness and concrete strength to the manufacturer's requirement, the anchor pattern set out, and a 230 - 460V three-phase supply run to the 10 HP power unit with its disconnect in place. An install crew standing next to a lift waiting on an electrician is an expensive afternoon.

The deck

Runways are 32" across and sit 14" off the floor. Approach ramps are diamond plate, which is a traction detail rather than a styling one — a lift gets loaded in the rain, with a cold tyre, by somebody who is already behind. Spacing between the runways is adjustable from 36" to 58", so a single deck handles both a narrow-track van and a dual-rear-wheel chassis.

Fitting rolling jacks changes that window to 43" - 53.5". If jacking wheels free is part of the work you sell, check that narrower range against your actual axle widths before ordering. Jacks come in a 15,000 lb to 35,000 lb range and are a separate purchase, as is an oil drain pan; neither is in the crate.

Locks and level control

Multiple lock positions up each column mean the deck parks where the work is comfortable, not just at full extension. One air-actuated control releases all four columns simultaneously, so nobody is walking the bay pulling locks in sequence.

The chain drive is powered hydraulically with lever control over the front and rear of the lift, together or independently. Vehicles with the mass concentrated at one end — a service body, a crane, a plough mount — can then be brought up level instead of climbing nose-high, which is easier on the chassis and considerably easier on the technician working underneath it.

• Municipal shops running utility and service bodies with uneven weight distribution.
• Independent heavy-truck repair shops that need capacity without a purpose-built building.
• Not for a home garage — three-phase power and a 41' bay put this firmly in commercial territory.

Certification, without the acronym soup

The data we hold for the 44040E does not record a third-party safety listing, and this page will not imply one. The distinction is real: an independent testing body examining a design and issuing a listing is not the same as a manufacturer declaring conformity for itself, and insurers, fleet safety auditors and some local authorities ask specifically for the former. If that is a condition of your purchase, tell us up front and we will get Challenger's current position in writing rather than guessing at it in a product description.

Freight, and what you need on site

Shipped as freight to the lower 48 states with the price quoted live at checkout for your delivery address. You are responsible for getting it off the truck — either a forklift with the capacity and reach for a crate this size, or a collection you book at the carrier's terminal. Delivery to a residential address is possible and carries a residential fee. Before you sign the bill of lading, walk the shipment: count it, look for crushed corners and bent steel, photograph anything wrong, write it on the paperwork and call us that day.

Warranty

Warranty is administered by the manufacturer and our warranty claims page explains how to start one. Do not take a failed assembly apart first. Once it has been opened it usually cannot be inspected as failed, and a clear claim becomes a disputed one.
