BendPak HDSO14AX: an open-front alignment lift built around 10.5" cable sheaves

Four-post lifts do not usually fail at the columns. They fail at the running gear — the cables and the sheaves those cables bend around, thousands of cycles a year. The HDSO14AX is a 14,000 lb open-front alignment lift, and the specification worth reading first is not its capacity but the size of its wear parts: 10.5" diameter cable sheaves turning on 2.25" diameter axles, running four aircraft-quality steel cables of 1/2" diameter in 6 x 25 construction, all enclosed inside the structure.

Why sheave diameter is the number to look at

A lifting cable is not damaged by hanging still under load. It is damaged by being bent, straightened and bent again. The tighter the bend, the more the outer strands stretch relative to the inner ones on every single cycle, and that fatigue is what eventually shows as a broken wire. Increasing the sheave diameter increases the radius the cable has to follow, which reduces the strain per cycle. A 10.5" sheave is a deliberate choice to spend money on the part that wears rather than on the part that shows.

The 2.25" sheave axles matter for the same unglamorous reason: a larger axle carries side load with less deflection, and the sheaves are self-lubricating with grease fittings as standard, so the bearing surface can be maintained rather than sealed in and forgotten. The runway rollers use 1-3/8" axles. Cables, sheaves and air lines run internally through the columns, cross tubes and runways, out of the way of impacts and dropped tools.

The open front, and how it stays level without a front beam

There is no front crossbar. On an alignment rack that is the difference between working at the front wheels and working around a beam that sits exactly where you want to be. Removing it takes away a structural tie, so the front is levelled instead with adjustable outrigger tubes whose pitch is set on installation — an uneven front load or a floor that is not quite flat gets trimmed out rather than lived with. Front turn plates sit in recessed multi-position pockets and the rear carries slip plates, so a wheel under adjustment settles freely instead of being held wound up by friction.

Locks: adjustable, and backed up

The lift carries 13 locking positions with lock spacing every 4", so working height suits the technician and the job rather than being whatever one lock gives. Locks are spring-loaded and engage as the carriage rises; release is pneumatic and simultaneous across all four columns from a push button, which keeps the platforms descending evenly.

Two independent safeguards sit behind that. A secondary lock system watches for cable slack and seizes the cable the moment it detects any, stopping the descent. Separately, a hydraulic flow divider limits the rate of fall if the hydraulic system loses pressure, so a failure produces a controlled descent rather than a drop.

Will it fit?

This is full-size commercial equipment and the building has to take it. Check three things before ordering: floor area, ceiling height and power.

Floor. The lift is 143" (11.85 ft.) wide overall and 243" (20 ft.) long including the approach ramps, or 215" (17.95 ft.) without them. Inside those outside dimensions you get 123" (10 ft.) between the columns and 97" (8 ft.) of drive-through clearance. The runways are 199" (16.5 ft.) long and 1.65 ft. wide, set 45" (3.75 ft.) apart. Add room in front of the ramps for a vehicle to line up straight, and room behind for the technician.

Height. Minimum height is 7.625" (0.65 ft.) at the runway, maximum rise under the runway is 70" (5.75 ft.), and maximum lifting height at the top of the runway is 77.625" (6.45 ft.). Your ceiling has to clear the tallest vehicle you intend to lift at full rise, plus the columns themselves. This listing does not publish a column height, so ask us for the specification sheet before you measure.

Power. The power unit is specified at 220 VAC / 60 Hz / 1 Ph. Have that circuit confirmed by an electrician against the manufacturer's manual before delivery, not after.

The slab is your responsibility. A four-post lift is anchored into concrete, and the thickness and strength required are stated in BendPak's installation and operation manual, which we hold and will send on request. This listing does not publish a concrete specification and we will not guess at one; confirming that your floor meets the manufacturer's requirement, and that it is thick enough where the anchors actually land, is the buyer's job and it is worth doing before the freight is booked.

Perfect for

  • Dedicated alignment bays where front-end access is the daily bottleneck.
  • Tyre and brake shops bringing alignment in house.
  • Dealership service departments running alignment at volume.
  • Fleet and municipal workshops on a scheduled return cycle.
  • Large private workshops with the floor, ceiling and slab for commercial equipment.

What is included, and what is not

  • Included: heavy-duty turn plates and integrated rear slip plates, multi-position turn plate pockets, an automatic levelling system with multiple locking positions, a rail kit in the runways for optional accessories, the electric-hydraulic power unit, and flexible protective conduit over the air lines and hydraulic hoses.
  • Not included: rolling bridge jacks. BendPak lists 7,000 lb capacity bridge jacks as an option for this lift — they are what turn an alignment rack into a general-purpose four-post for brake and wheel work, and they are ordered separately. Ask us to quote them with the lift if you want that capability from day one.

Certification, stated precisely

BendPak states that this model is CE approved and certified, and that it meets or exceeds the standards prescribed by European Standard EN-1493. That is a real and checkable claim, and it is worth understanding exactly what it is. A European conformity marking is a declaration made against European directives. It is not the same document as a North American third-party lift-safety listing, and it does not substitute for one. Most private and independent buyers are never asked for either. Some insurers, fleet operating standards, franchise programmes and local jurisdictions specifically require the North American listing before a lift is put into service, and they name a document rather than a brand. If that applies to you, establish the requirement in writing before you order, and ask us to confirm what documentation ships with the lift.

Shipping and delivery

This ships as freight to the lower 48 states, quoted live at checkout against the address you enter rather than shown as a stale estimate. Two figures should shape your plan: the shipment weighs 3,586 lbs and the crate is 240" x 23" x 41" — twenty feet long. That length is the part people underestimate. Confirm the truck can reach the delivery point and turn, and that there is twenty feet of clear ground to set the crate down on.

Unloading is the receiver's responsibility: a forklift with the capacity and reach for a crate that size, or terminal pickup from the carrier, often easier because the terminal already has the equipment. Residential delivery carries a residential fee, applied at checkout when selected.

Inspect before you sign: crushed crate ends, bent or gouged steel, shifted banding, kinked or frayed cable, oil traces. Note anything you find on the bill of lading while the driver is present, and photograph it. A clean signature is the carrier's evidence that the load arrived undamaged.

Warranty

BendPak publishes a written warranty document covering its products, and we hold the current copy rather than a summary — ask for it before ordering if the terms bear on your decision. One rule applies to hydraulic lifts of every make: if something fails, open the claim before anything is dismantled. Taking apart a power unit, cylinder, sheave assembly or lock first is normally read as modification, and cover rarely survives it. Photograph the fault, take the serial number from the column, and call us first.
