BendPak HDS-40X Four-Post Heavy-Duty Lift, Extended Runways

The number on the box is 40,000 lbs. The number that decides whether your truck can go on this lift is not that one. BendPak's specification sheet for the HDS-40X sets a maximum of 20,000 lbs (9,072 kg) on the front axle and 20,000 lbs (9,072 kg) on the rear, and it publishes a minimum-wheelbase table that derates the lift as the wheelbase shortens: the full rating needs a 230" (5,842 mm) wheelbase, dropping to 195" (4,953 mm) at 75% capacity, 165" (4,191 mm) at 50% and 130" (3,302 mm) at 25%. A short, heavy, nose-loaded vehicle can fall outside the lift's rating long before its gross weight reaches 40,000 lbs.

That table is the most useful thing on this page and it is almost never quoted in lift marketing. Bring us the axle weights and the wheelbase of the heaviest vehicle you intend to lift and the question answers itself.

Will it fit?

The HDS-40X is the extended-runway version of BendPak's heaviest four-post lift, and it needs a commercial bay. Overall width is 153.5" (3,899 mm) with 133.5" (3,391 mm) between the columns, and the columns stand 91.25" (2,318 mm) tall. Outside length is 317" (8,052 mm). Drive-through clearance between the carriages is 109" (2,769 mm), which is the figure that decides whether your vehicles can pass through rather than reverse out.

Runways are 28" (711 mm) wide, set 40.75" (1,035 mm) apart, with a runway centreline of 74" (1,880 mm) and an outside edge of runways at 102" (2,591 mm). At rest the runway sits 9.5" (241 mm) off the floor; maximum rise is 60" (1,524 mm) and maximum lifting height 67" (1,702 mm). The power unit runs on 220V, 60 Hz single phase, and BendPak rates the unit at 45 dB.

Runway length is published two different ways and we have not resolved it. The product copy on this page states 310" runways. BendPak's specification sheet for the same model gives a length of runways of 316" (8,026 mm). For most buyers a six-inch difference will not change the decision, but if you are fitting this lift into a measured bay, or if the vehicle length is marginal, that is exactly the situation where it matters. Ask us to confirm the runway length and the overall footprint in writing before you order — the same page also carries two different overall-length figures, so treat the footprint as something to be confirmed rather than read off.

Concrete thickness, concrete strength, anchoring and ceiling height are the buyer's responsibility to verify against BendPak's installation and operation manual, which is linked in the downloads on this page and is the governing document. A lift of this class is not something to site from a web page.

Locks: thirteen positions, four inches apart

Spring-loaded safety locks give 13 positions across up to 60" (1,524 mm) of rise, spaced every 4" (102 mm). The spacing is what makes the lift comfortable rather than merely safe: with four-inch increments a technician can nearly always find a locked height that puts the work at chest level instead of settling for whichever position happens to be close. Locks engage automatically as the lift rises and release at the touch of a button.

Behind the primary locks sits a backup cable-slack detection system on constant guard. If slack develops in a cable, it is captured immediately, which is what lets a problem be dealt with without the runways going out of level under a loaded vehicle.

Sheaves, cables and the parts that wear

The wear items on a four-post lift are the cables and the sheaves they run over, so this is where the specification is worth reading. The HDS-40X uses 12" diameter cable sheaves on 4" axles. A large sheave body bends a cable less sharply on every cycle, and a large axle spreads the load across more bearing surface — both directly extend the working life of the cable. The lifting cables are galvanized and fully enclosed, and grease nipples are fitted for routine maintenance. A single hydraulic under-runway cylinder does the lifting, with an integrated flow restrictor that limits the rate of descent if a hose ever ruptures.

Base plates are 12" x 12", sized for the columns that carry this much vehicle. Runways have a durable matte finish and the structure is powder coated.

Rolling jacks, and a limit worth respecting

Wheel service on a four-post lift needs bridge jacks. BendPak offers rolling jacks for this lift, and here is the part to read carefully: a pair of RBJ25000 jacks will together raise a vehicle of up to 50,000 lbs, but the HDS-40X itself is rated at 40,000 lbs and that is the number that governs. Jack capacity above lift capacity is headroom for uneven front-to-rear distribution, not permission to exceed the lift's rating. The front half of most trucks, where the engine and transmission sit, is the heavier half — which is precisely why the axle limits above exist.

Perfect For

  • Commercial truck and bus repair shops working long, heavy vehicles
  • Fleet, municipal and government maintenance facilities
  • Operations needing storage and parking capability from the same lift
  • Shops with the bay length, ceiling height and slab to support this class of lift

What's in the Box

The HDS-40X four-post structure with extended runways, galvanized fully enclosed lifting cables, 12" cable sheaves, the single under-runway hydraulic cylinder with integrated flow restrictor, spring-loaded safety locks with the secondary cable-slack system, 12" x 12" base plates, grease nipples and the electric-hydraulic power unit with its operator controls. Rolling bridge jacks are optional and ordered separately, as are anchors, concrete work and electrical installation.

Certification, stated plainly

Our product data for the HDS-40X records no third-party lift safety listing claim, and we are not going to imply one that our own data does not support. That is not a statement that no such listing exists — it is a statement that we have not verified one. It matters because a fleet safety policy, a commercial insurer or a local inspection regime may require a listing document for a lift of this capacity, and a marketing sentence is not that document. If a listing is a condition of your cover, your contract or your inspection, tell us before you order and we will confirm in writing what documentation BendPak issues for this model.

Shipping and delivery

Freight only, to the lower 48 states. This is a large, heavy, long shipment and the unload is your responsibility: you need a forklift or equivalent equipment with the capacity and reach for it, or you take terminal pickup from the carrier and collect with suitable equipment. Residential delivery is available and carries a residential fee, though a lift of this size is rarely destined for one. Freight is quoted live at checkout rather than fixed into this description.

Check the shipment against the delivery receipt before signing and record any damage on the paperwork at the time — bent runway ends and crushed crate corners are the common ones and they are much easier to resolve before a clean receipt is signed. Warehouse pickup is available at the BendPak locations listed in the Pick Up and Delivery section of this page.

Warranty

BendPak's written warranty covers this product; the document is linked from this page and it is the governing text, which is why no term or period is paraphrased here. If something fails, open the claim before anything is taken apart. Dismantling a power unit or cylinder ahead of inspection is the most common way a hydraulic claim is lost. Photograph it, take the lift out of service, and contact us.
