Description
-HDS-18E: buying 9 tons of lift because 9 tons is what you lift
Most heavy-duty four-post lifts are sold by pointing at the biggest number in the catalogue. The HDS-18E is the opposite argument, and the manufacturer's own copy makes it: there is no sense paying for 20 tons of capacity when 9 tons will do the job. Excess capacity is not a free safety margin. It is a bigger crate, a heavier structure, a larger footprint in a bay you are already short of, and a price that reflects all three.
18,000 lbs is a genuinely useful place to sit. It covers buses, dump trucks, farm equipment and the heavy end of a commercial fleet, and because the runways sit low it still handles a low-slung sports car or a compact without drama. This is also the first of the heavy-duty models to get extended runways — the arrangement all the larger lifts in the family are built with.
A runway figure our two sources do not agree on
Runway length is one of the few numbers on a four-post lift that a buyer really does have to get right, so it is shown here as we hold it rather than resolved for you.
| Source | Runway length |
|---|---|
| The product description currently on this page | Extended runways, 263" front-to-back |
| BendPak published specification, line K | 255.5" (6,490 mm) |
Those are not the same measurement of the same thing, and we cannot reconcile them from the data we hold. If runway length decides whether a long-wheelbase vehicle fits, or whether the lift fits your bay, ask us to confirm it in writing before you order and we will get the figure from the manufacturer instead of choosing the one that reads better. For planning, note that the overall length including approach ramps is 312.75" (7,944 mm) whichever runway figure turns out to be right.
Will It Fit?
- Floor length. 312.75" (7,944 mm) overall, or 257" (6,528 mm) outside length without the ramps.
- Floor width. 153.5" (3,899 mm) overall, with 133.5" (3,391 mm) between the columns — about 11 ft.
- Drive-through clearance. 109" (2,769 mm), roughly 9 ft.
- Height. Column height is 91.25" (2,318 mm). Maximum rise is 60" (1,524 mm) and maximum lifting height 69.5" (1,765 mm), so your ceiling has to clear the vehicle at full rise. Minimum runway height is 9.5" (241 mm) and a lift cycle takes 75 seconds.
- Runways. 22" (559 mm) wide, set 40" (1,016 mm) or 45.25" (1,149 mm) apart, centred at 67.25" (1,708 mm) or 72.5" (1,842 mm), outside edges at 89.25" (2,267 mm) or 94.5" (2,400 mm).
- Power. 220 VAC / 60 Hz / 1 Ph, running at 45 dB.
Verifying ceiling, floor and supply is the buyer's responsibility. Our record does not state a required concrete thickness or strength; it is in the installation manual linked on this page and we will confirm it in writing on request before you order.
The wheelbase table, which is the spec people miss
A capacity rating on a four-post lift assumes the load is spread along the runways. Park something heavy and short — a compact loader, a tipper with a stubby wheelbase — and it concentrates weight between fewer support points, so the lift derates. BendPak publishes the relationship rather than leaving you to find out:
| Usable capacity | Minimum wheelbase |
|---|---|
| Full rated capacity | 185" (4,699 mm) |
| 75 percent | 160" (4,064 mm) |
| 50 percent | 135" (3,429 mm) |
| 25 percent | 110" (2,794 mm) |
Read it the other way round and it is a buying check: if the heaviest thing you own has a short wheelbase, the number that matters to you is not 18,000 lbs, it is the line in that table your vehicle actually sits on.
Cables, sheaves and the grip underfoot
The four lifting cables are galvanized, which is an abrasion and fatigue decision more than a corrosion one — a cable that frets against a sheave for ten years fails from the outside in. They run over supersized 12" diameter sheaves turning on 4" diameter axles: a larger wheel is a gentler bend radius, and a gentler bend is a longer-lived cable. Every sheave and axle has a grease nipple.
The runway surfaces are treaded, and the point is not appearance. A wet or oily runway under a heavy truck tyre is where a loading incident starts, and a textured surface grips without marring the tyre. The columns stand on 12" x 12" base plates, which is what lets you work near the rated weight without watching the posts.
Locks that hold and a descent that cannot run away
Spring-loaded safety locks engage continuously through the rise, and the safety ladders are adjustable, so runways can be levelled precisely even where the posts stand on a slightly sloping floor — a common reality in older workshops. Lowering is a push-button pneumatic release through aircraft-quality stainless and aluminium cylinders. Behind that is a secondary lock system on constant guard, acting as a slack-cable device should a cable ever fail. The single hydraulic under-runway cylinder carries an integrated flow restrictor, so a ruptured hose produces a controlled descent rather than a fast one.
Perfect For
- Commercial and municipal fleets running buses, tippers and utility bodies.
- Agricultural workshops servicing heavy farm equipment alongside pickups.
- Shops moving up from mid-size trucks and vans that want headroom in the capacity without buying the largest lift made.
- Mixed workloads, since low runways mean the same lift still takes a compact or a low sports car.
What's in the Box
From this model's own feature list: four galvanized lifting cables, 12" diameter cable sheaves with grease nipples, the single hydraulic under-runway cylinder with integrated flow restrictor, spring-loaded safety locks with adjustable ladders, the secondary slack-cable lock system, push-button pneumatic lock release, the maintenance-free electric-hydraulic power system, conveniently positioned operator controls, fully enclosed lifting cables and 12" x 12" base plates. Rolling jacks are optional and are not included — and note they come as a set of two, because one jack raises an end and two raise the vehicle. Sort that out at order time.

Certification, and what it does and does not cover
Our record for this lift states that it is CE approved and certified, meeting or exceeding the standards prescribed by European Standard EN-1493. That is what we hold, and it is worth having.
Be precise about what it means, though. A European conformity marking is largely a manufacturer's declaration against European directives. It is a different document from a North American third-party lift safety listing, in which an independent body examines the design and lists the product, and it does not substitute for one. Insurers, fleet policies and some local code officials ask for that second kind, and our record does not hold one — a statement about our data, not a verdict on the machine. If it is a condition of your cover or your workplace rules, ask us in writing before you order.
Shipping and delivery
Freight only, to the lower 48 states, priced live at checkout for your own address — which is why no shipping figure appears on this page.
The carrier stops at the kerb. Arrange unloading before delivery: a forklift or telehandler on site, or collection from the freight terminal, which for a crate of this length is usually the easier route. A residential address carries a residential fee; warehouse pickup is available for this brand. Check the shipment before signing and write any damage on the bill of lading immediately — a clean signature makes a later claim close to unwinnable.
Warranty
The governing warranty document is linked on this page; read the term and the exclusions there rather than any summary of them. One rule applies whatever the terms: never take apart a component you intend to claim on. Photograph the fault, leave the assembly intact and contact us first, because a stripped part is the usual reason a good claim is refused.
