Description
-Atlas TC289LH: the changer sized for the wheels that beat smaller machines
The TC289LH's defining feature is not on its options list, it is in its geometry. It has an extra-large turntable with more clearance, clamping externally from 11 7/8" to 27 7/8" and internally from 13 7/8" to 29 7/8", taking a tyre up to 47" in diameter and 18" wide at the bead breaker. Those are the numbers that let a general service department stop turning away the one-ton pickup, the dual-rear-wheel van and the farm tyre that the shop's existing machine will not accept.
The second thing worth knowing is that its bead breaker plate is adjustable — not a fixed blade you have to work around, but one you set to suit the wheel in front of you. On a machine deliberately built to handle a huge spread of wheel widths, an adjustable breaker plate is what stops the widest and the narrowest jobs both being awkward.
Why the adjustable bead breaker plate matters
Breaking a bead is a shear operation: the blade has to land on the tyre right at the rim flange, and where that point sits changes with wheel width. A fixed plate is set for the middle of the range, which means the widest wheels get hit too far in and the narrowest get hit at an angle. Neither destroys a rim on the first try; both are how rims get damaged over a career. Setting the plate to the wheel takes seconds and it is the single biggest thing you can do to keep a customer's alloy unmarked. Backing that up, the plate has a supplied plastic cover, the turntable jaws take large plastic covers, and the mount/demount head is a metal one with a roller and replaceable plastic inserts.
The Left Hand Assist arm
The LH in TC289LH is the Left Hand Assist arm, supplied with the machine. It carries a pressing block and disc and does exactly one job well: it holds the sidewall down in the drop centre while your hands are on the bar and the head. On a stiff-sidewall or low-profile tyre that is the difference between a controlled fitment and a wrestle, and it is what makes the machine workable by one person. If your work is predominantly runflats you may eventually want a second arm on the other side; for a mixed service department doing tyres alongside everything else, one arm and a big turntable is the right balance.
Beadblaster: seating a bead that does not want to seat
The TC289 carries a built-in Beadblaster system. Some tyres — stiff sidewalls, cold rubber, a bead that has taken a set sitting flat in a rack — leak air past the rim faster than an inflator can supply it, so they never begin to seat. The Beadblaster releases a large volume of air at once, forcing both beads out against the flanges long enough for the inflator to take over. It is plumbed into the machine, not a separate tool to find, and on large-diameter tyres it turns a regular nuisance into a non-event.
Will it work in your shop?
- Air. The jaws and bead breaker are air operated and an external air supply is required — it is not included. The machine wants 90-110 PSI and must not exceed 140 PSI. A compressor that sags under the bead breaker's demand will make a capable machine feel feeble.
- Power. 110volt for the electric turntable. No special supply.
- Space and floor. Allow for a 47" tyre to be swung, and for an operator to walk fully around the turntable.
- Delivery. It is an 800 lbs crated shipment — see the delivery notes below before you order.
- Assembly. The machine requires some assembly after purchase.
Confirming that your air supply, power and floor space suit the machine is the buyer's responsibility, and it is worth ten minutes with a tape and a pressure gauge before you commit.
Perfect For
- General automotive service departments that need one changer to cover everything that comes through the door.
- Medium-sized tyre stores handling light truck and large SUV volume.
- Farm and rural workshops, where the biggest wheel on site is the one that decides the purchase.
- The well-equipped home shop running larger-diameter wheels than a compact changer will take.
What's in the Box
Supplied with the machine: the Left Hand Assist arm with pressing block and disc, the column-mounted inflator box with gauge, the filter/regulator/lubricator, a 20" tyre tool, a lube bucket with brush, a set of large plastic jaw covers, a plastic cover for the bead breaker shovel, and multiple replacement plastic inserts for the mount/demount head. Motorcycle and ATV adapters are available but sold separately, and there is no compressor in the crate.

Certification, honestly
No third-party listing is stated in the manufacturer's data for this machine, so none is shown here. Requirements differ by premises: some commercial insurance policies and some local authorities specify that shop machinery carries a recognised independent mark, and that is a question only your own insurer or inspector can answer for your address. Ask them first, then ask us — we would rather have that conversation before the freight moves than after.
Shipping and delivery
Freight only, lower 48, crated on a pallet and delivered to the curb. Unloading is the customer's responsibility: a forklift, a dock and pallet truck, or a terminal pickup you collect from. Warehouse pickup locations and our phone number appear further down this page. Residential deliveries carry an additional fee, charged once per brand on the order. Before signing, walk the crate — column, turntable, inflator box, breaker blade — and write any damage on the bill of lading in front of the driver. Once a clean bill of lading is signed, a later claim is an uphill fight.
Warranty
1 year parts only: components covered, labour not. Wear items and replacement parts are held in stock, which on a tyre changer is the specification that actually keeps a bay open — jaw covers, head inserts and shovel covers are consumables, not failures. If something does fail, stop using the machine, photograph it in place and open the claim before anything is taken apart; disassembly before a claim is usually treated as your own inspection and can void it. Start the process on our warranty claims page.
