Description
-Atlas FM9SL — a flush lift with one rule you must follow
The FM9SL is a 9,000 lb full-rise scissor lift that sets into the floor, so when it is down the bay is flat and a vehicle can be driven across it from any direction. That is the reason shops buy this shape: no columns to steer around, no runways to line up on, and a service area that can be laid out for traffic rather than around the lifts.
It is also an open-centre lift, and that is where the honesty comes in. There is no cross bar at the front or the rear tying the two platforms together, which is exactly what gives you a clear, uninterrupted view and reach under the vehicle. The trade is that each platform is holding its own share of the load independently. The vehicle’s frame must sit at least 6 inches inboard of the inside edge of the platform. Load it closer to the edges than that and the platforms can twist toward each other — the pigeon-toed failure — and the damage is yours, not a warranty matter. Atlas sells a scissor lift support bar kit that spreads a narrow frame across the whole platform surface; if your work is mostly narrow-frame vehicles, buy it at the same time as the lift.
We would rather put that in the second paragraph than the small print. A shop that knows the rule follows it in about two seconds per vehicle. A shop that does not know it finds out expensively.
Will It Fit Your Shop?
This lift is installed into the floor, so the fitment question is a construction question and it needs answering before you order rather than after.
- Excavation. Flush mounting needs a recess cut and prepared, but nothing like the pit an older in-ground lift demanded. The electric/hydraulic power unit sits in its own separate self-contained control cabinet at floor level, so routine maintenance does not mean going under the floor.
- Power. 220 volt single phase with a 30 amp breaker required. The tolerance is stated as plus or minus 5%, which is 209 to 231 volts — worth checking with a meter on a long run or a loaded panel rather than assuming, because a lift that browns out under load is a lift that has been fed badly.
- Air. 90–120 PSI from an external supply for the single-point locks. Compressed air is not included.
- Oil. 3–5 gallons of AW32 or AW46, not supplied.
Confirming the slab, the excavation, the electrical supply and the air line is the customer’s responsibility. So is confirming that your building can have a recess cut into it at all — in a leased unit that is a landlord conversation, and it is better held before the freight arrives.
Why a flush lift changes the shape of a service department
An above-ground lift claims its footprint permanently. Even empty, nobody parks on it, nobody rolls a toolbox across it, and the bay next door has to allow for the columns. A flush-mounted scissor gives that floor back whenever it is down. Vehicles can be positioned in the tightest arrangement the building allows, because the lift is not an obstacle to drive around — it is part of the floor. For a shop counting bays per square foot, that is not cosmetic, it is capacity.
The clean-floor look matters commercially too. A customer-visible service area with nothing standing in it reads as an organised operation, and a lot of dealership and franchise fit-outs specify flush lifts for exactly that reason.
Adjustable width and platforms that extend
The platforms adjust for width and extend at both ends, which is what makes one lift cover a mixed book of work. Retracted and narrowed, it suits a compact car; extended front and rear, it takes a long-wheelbase pickup without the overhang that makes an operator nervous. Each hinge point carries a grease zerk fitting, so the wear points can actually be maintained instead of being sealed and hoped for — a small thing that shows up years later as a lift that still runs smoothly.
Locks are air-operated and released from a single point, so the lift comes off the locks together rather than corner by corner. Heavy-duty rubber lifting blocks and mounting hardware are included.
Perfect For
- Service departments maximising bays per square foot — the whole argument for this lift is floor space returned.
- Dealership and franchise fit-outs where a clean, unobstructed customer-facing floor is part of the specification.
- Quick-service and tire bays that need vehicles driven across the lift from more than one direction.
- Shops with wide-frame vehicles, or shops willing to add the support bar kit for narrow-frame work.

Heavy-duty rubber lifting blocks, mounting hardware and the separate self-contained control unit are included. The support bar lifting kit is sold separately. Compressed air, hydraulic oil, the excavation and the electrical supply are all yours. Shipping weight is 2,025 lb.

Certification, stated plainly
The FM9SL is CE certified. That is a manufacturer’s declaration of conformity against European directives — the manufacturer signs it, not an outside body. It is not the same document as a North American third-party lift safety listing, and it is not a substitute for one. Some commercial insurance policies, fleet programmes and local jurisdictions require that North American listing by name, and a lift without it can fail a paperwork check regardless of how it is built. If any of that applies to you, verify the exact requirement before ordering rather than after installation, because an installed in-floor lift is not something you return.
Shipping and delivery
Freight only, lower 48 states, with the rate quoted live at checkout against your address so it reflects today’s market rather than a printed guess. At 2,025 lb you need a forklift or a dock, or you take terminal pickup and collect the crate yourself. A residential address carries a residential fee. Inspect the shipment before the driver leaves and record any damage on the bill of lading there and then — a clean signature is treated as confirmation the goods arrived sound, and unwinding it later is rarely successful.
Warranty
1 year structural and 1 year hydraulic, parts only: Atlas supplies the component and the labour to fit it is not covered. Check the term against the other lifts on your shortlist before you decide, because it varies by model across the range. If something fails, open the claim before anything is dismantled — a stripped cylinder or power unit cannot be assessed, and that is the usual reason a legitimate claim stalls.
