Atlas BP8000 8,000 lb Baseplate 2-Post Lift

Atlas prints the honest sentence on its own feature list, and we would rather repeat it than bury it: the BP8000 is a hobbyist-grade lift, not intended for heavy commercial use. That is the manufacturer describing its own product, and it is the single most useful thing on this page. Equipment sellers rarely volunteer what a machine is not for.

What makes that credible rather than defensive is the warranty sitting next to it: 5 years structural, 2 years hydraulic, parts only. A manufacturer prepared to stand behind the steel for five years while telling you plainly it is not a lift for a bay running all day is a manufacturer being straight with you. Buy it for what it is — a serious 8,000 lb lift for a home garage, a restoration project or light professional work — and it will be the right purchase.

Will It Fit?

This is a baseplate lift, which is a ceiling decision before it is anything else. The equalising gear runs across the floor rather than over the top of the bay, so there is no overhead beam and no height added above the columns.

• Column height 108" (9'). The current copy states the lift goes into a garage with as little as 9 feet 3 inches of clearance, which is the kind of figure most two-post lifts cannot come near.
• Overall floor width 132" (11'), outside column to outside column 124" (10' 4"), inside the columns 109 1/8" (9' 1 1/8").
• Drive-through 99" (8' 3"). This is the number that says whether a wide pickup gets between the posts, and it is worth measuring your actual truck rather than trusting a memory of it.
• Lift height 75 1/2" without adapters, 86 1/2" with them; minimum arm height 4".
• Concrete: a minimum of 4" at a 3000 psi rating. On a baseplate lift this is not a footnote — read the next section.
• Power: 220 volt single phase, 30 amp breaker recommended. Very few home garages already have that circuit, so plan on an electrician.
• Oil: 3 to 5 gallons of AW32 or AW46, not included.

Measuring the ceiling, the bay, the slab and the route in is the customer's responsibility. Ask us first if any of it is marginal; the conversation is free and a lift that will not go in is not a problem anyone can fix afterwards.

The Baseplate Trade, Stated Properly

What you gain from a baseplate design is the ceiling. What you accept is a plate across the floor between the columns, carrying the cables and hoses that keep the two carriages equalised. You will step over it, roll a jack over it, and occasionally catch a creeper on it. Nobody who buys one of these is surprised by that, but plenty of people are surprised by the second consequence.

On an overhead lift, load is shared between the anchors and the beam tying the columns together at the top. On a baseplate lift, the anchors and your slab are what stop the columns spreading apart under load. That is why the concrete specification matters more here than on almost any other lift in the catalogue. Four inches at 3000 psi is the published minimum, not a target. If your slab is old, cracked, unknown, thinner at the edges of the bay, or post-tensioned, find out what you actually have before you order. Drilling into a post-tensioned slab is a genuinely serious mistake and the only way to avoid it is to know first.

Arms, Locks and Cylinders

The arms are 3-stage at the front and 2-stage at the rear. The extra front stage exists because front lift points sit further inboard and further from where a column can practically stand; three stages let the same lift tuck under a low coupe and still reach a crew cab's pinch weld.

Two safety systems back that up. Automatic arm restraints lock the arms against swinging as soon as the vehicle's weight settles onto them — automatic, so nobody can forget the step. The double safety lock system puts mechanical locks in the load path so the vehicle sits on steel and not on hydraulic pressure, and the release is single-point: one control does both columns, rather than an operator walking from post to post, which is where an uneven descent begins.

Dual hydraulic chain-drive cylinders raise it. The chain drive ties the carriages to each other so the vehicle stays level even when the load on it is not — which, with an engine out or a gearbox on a jack, it usually is not.

Perfect For

• Home garages with a standard ceiling — the reason this model exists.
• Restoration and project work, where a car is up for a long time and cycled rarely.
• Light professional use alongside other equipment, within the manufacturer's own duty statement above.

Certification, Stated Plainly

Atlas publishes no independent third-party safety listing for the BP8000, and we are not going to imply one exists. The distinction worth knowing is between an outside laboratory that tests a lift design against a published standard and then audits the plant building it, and a manufacturer stating conformity on its own authority. This lift is sold on the second basis.

In a home garage that rarely matters. It starts to matter when somebody else is being asked to carry the risk: an insurer, a landlord's lease conditions, a fleet contract, or a local jurisdiction with its own rules on vehicle lifts. If any of those apply to you, confirm the requirement before you buy — and ask us, because we would rather answer the question than take a return.

Shipping and Delivery

Ships by freight carrier within the lower 48 at 1,300 lbs, quoted live at checkout for your real destination rather than a national average. Unloading is the buyer's responsibility, and Atlas is blunt about what that takes: a forklift, a bobcat or skid steer, or a roll-back wrecker truck. Expect delivery on a full-size enclosed tractor-trailer, which does not fit down every residential street. Sort the equipment and check your access before delivery day, or choose terminal pickup and collect the crate yourself. A home address rather than a commercial one carries a residential fee.

Inspect the crate before you sign: photograph anything wrong, write the damage onto the bill of lading with the driver present, and keep your copy.

Warranty and Installation

Cover is 5 years structural and 2 years hydraulic, parts only: the part is supplied, the labour to fit it is yours.

One thing to do on day one that heads off a good share of first-week calls: bleed the cylinders properly after installation. Trapped air is the usual explanation for a new two-post that rises unevenly, drifts down slightly, or will not quite reach full height, and it is not a fault. Atlas publishes the procedure — ask us for it with your order.

If it is a genuine failure, leave the lift assembled. Photograph the fault in place, note what was on the lift and what it was doing, and call us before anything comes apart. A component that arrives already dismantled has lost the evidence a claim depends on.
