Atlas APEX9 — a certified lift that is not bolted to your floor

Free-standing four-post lifts and independent safety certification do not usually appear in the same sentence. Certification is normally the preserve of anchored commercial equipment, and the portable lifts that fill home garages and restoration shops are sold on capacity and price alone. The APEX9 is ALI certified and free-standing. It sits on your slab under its own weight, it can be moved with a caster kit, and it still carries the listing that a commercial insurer or a local inspector recognises.

The second half of that story is the steel. The APEX9 ships at 2,975 lb. On a lift that is not anchored, mass is not a shipping inconvenience — it is the stability. A heavier structure deflects less under an off-centre load and stays where it was put when a vehicle rolls up the ramps. It is the number to compare when two portable lifts quote the same capacity.

Will It Fit Your Garage?

  • Ceiling. The columns stand 99". The runways rise to 86", leaving 81 1/4" (6' 9 1/4") of clearance beneath them — enough to park a second car underneath, which is what most APEX9 buyers are actually doing with it.
  • Drive-through. 98 5/8" (8' 2 5/8") between the carriages, with 108 1/8" (9' 1/8") of clearance between the columns. That is roughly 8 ft of driving width inside a 9 ft column span.
  • Runways. 196 1/2" (16' 4 1/2") long, 20 1/8" wide, 4 3/4" thick, set 38 7/8" apart (34 3/4" between the rails) and 79" across the outside of the pair. Wide enough for a dual-rear-wheel pickup to track on.
  • Power. 110 volt on a 30 amp breaker. An ordinary garage circuit, which is a large part of why this lift ends up in domestic buildings.
  • Oil. 3–5 gallons, not supplied.

Atlas publishes two overall width figures for this lift, 121" and 133", and two overall lengths, 184" and 227". The data we hold does not label which of each pair includes the motor and the approach ramps, so plan your bay against the larger figure in each case and check the manual before you pour a line on the floor. Confirming ceiling height, floor area and slab condition is the customer’s responsibility — we cannot measure your building for you.

What certification actually buys you here

ALI certification means an independent body has tested and listed this lift against the North American standard. It is not Atlas asserting that its own lift is safe; it is an outside organisation putting its name to it. For a home user that is reassurance. For anyone doing paid work — a restoration shop, a mobile technician with a unit, a small service centre — it can be the difference between a policy that pays out and a conversation about whether the equipment was listed. Some commercial insurance policies, some fleet programmes and some local jurisdictions ask for that listing by name, and a lift without it fails the paperwork regardless of how well it is built.

Being able to have that listing on a lift you can wheel out of the way is unusual, and it is the reason to look at the APEX9 rather than the uncertified portables it sits alongside.

Portable by design, with one supply question to settle first

Fitted, the caster kit with polyurethane wheels takes minutes to install or remove, and it lets the lift be repositioned between bays or rolled outside for a job that will not fit indoors. That mechanism is what makes the free-standing design worth having.

Where the kit comes from is less settled. Our own product data lists it as a separate purchase. The manufacturer’s current published listing presents it as part of what ships with the lift. Those two statements do not describe the same pallet, we cannot reconcile them from what we hold, and we are not going to choose one on your behalf. Ask us in writing to confirm what the crate contains before you place the order — specifically, whether the casters appear on the packing list or are a line you have to add yourself. If wheeling this lift around the building is half the reason you want it, that answer is worth a day’s wait. Anchor bolts are listed as an option either way, for a buyer who would rather fix the lift down after all.

The runways carry tracks between them for a rolling bridge jack — the Atlas RJ6BK is the usual match — which is how you get all four wheels off the deck for brake and tire work. A four-post without a bridge jack cannot do wheel-off jobs at all, so decide about it while you are ordering. Underneath, the lift runs a single-point lock release with a lock ladder and a double lock safety system, on diamond-plated runways with a powder coat finish.

Perfect For

  • Collectors stacking cars — 81 1/4" under the runways is a parking space, not just working room.
  • Restoration shops that need a certified lift without committing to anchor bolts in a building they may not keep.
  • Serious home garages where a 110 volt circuit is the only electrical work anyone wants to do.
  • Small service centres whose insurer or local code asks for a listed lift.

What’s in the Box

Steel approach ramps, a steel jack tray, four plastic drip trays and two rubber wheel chocks are included. The rolling bridge jack, the hydraulic oil and the anchor bolts are extras. The caster kit is the open question described above — have us check it against the packing list rather than assuming it either way. Shipping weight is 2,975 lb.

Certification

ALI certified, as set out above. If you are buying for a business, keep the certification paperwork with your equipment records — the listing is only useful to you if you can produce it when someone asks.

Shipping and delivery

Freight only, lower 48 states. The rate is worked out live at checkout for your own address, so it is a current quote rather than a figure typed into a page and forgotten. At 2,975 lb this needs a forklift or a dock; if you have neither, choose terminal pickup and collect it with a trailer. Residential deliveries carry a residential fee. Walk the crate before you sign, and write any damage on the bill of lading while the driver is standing there — a clean signature hands the carrier the argument.

Warranty

5 years structural and 2 years hydraulic. If a component fails, start the claim before you take anything apart: a cylinder or power unit that has already been dismantled cannot be assessed, and that is the most common way a claim that should have been simple turns into a long one.
