Atlas 6PL Open Center Low Rise 6,000 lb Scissor Lift

The two words in this lift's name that earn their place are open center. On most low-rise scissor lifts the two lifting platforms are tied together by structure that runs beneath the middle of the vehicle. On the 6PL there is nothing there. Stand under a car on this lift and the entire centre of the underbody — exhaust, transmission tunnel, fuel and brake lines, the middle of the floorpan — is open to you rather than obscured by the lift you are standing next to.

That single design decision is why this model exists alongside the other low rises in the range. It is a 6,000 lb capacity lift built for quick-turn work — tires, brakes, wheels off — with drive-over ramps, four non-slip rubber pads, a set of heavy-duty rubber lifting blocks, and an air-operated single-point lock release. Mounting hardware is included, which tells you what kind of lift it is: one that gets installed, not one you wheel about.

Will It Fit?

A low rise is easy on ceiling height and demanding about two other things: floor and services. Check all of it before you order.

• Overall width 71" (5' 11"). That is the installed footprint side to side. Atlas notes it can be installed closer together if you want it tighter.
• Platform dimensions 53" x 18" each. Those are what the vehicle sits on, so check your pinch-weld or frame lift points against that length.
• Lowered height 4 1/2". With the drive-over ramps this is what a low-slung car has to clear on the way on.
• Maximum lifting height with blocks 26" (2' 2"). This is a wheels-and-brakes working height, not a stand-underneath height. If you want to walk under the car, this is not the lift for that job and we would rather say so now.
• Power: 110 volt. An ordinary outlet. No electrician.
• Air: an external supply is required for the single-point lock release, at up to 125 PSI. Without shop air you cannot release the locks in the way the lift is designed to be released.
• Oil: 1.5 to 2 gallons of AW32 or AW46, not included. Buy it with the lift or it will be sitting in your bay waiting on a trip to the supplier.

Confirming the floor, the space and the services is the customer's responsibility. One honest gap while you are doing that: Atlas does not publish a concrete thickness or slab strength requirement for the 6PL, and we are not going to invent one for a lift that comes with mounting hardware and gets anchored down. If your slab is thin, cracked, post-tensioned, or you simply do not know what is under it, ask us before you order and we will get the anchoring requirement in writing from Atlas. That question is free now and expensive later.

Why Open Center Changes the Job

Low-rise lifts get bought for speed. You drive on, you go up, you take the wheels off, you are done. The moment the job turns into anything else — a brake line that has to be traced, an exhaust hanger, a leak you can hear but not see — the structure under the middle of the car becomes the thing you are working around.

With an open centre it is not there. You get a clear line of sight and a clear reach along the whole underside of the vehicle. In practice that means the 6PL handles a lot of work that would otherwise get bumped to a two-post lift and a longer slot in the schedule, which for a busy shop is the difference between finishing a car and moving it.

The trade is that an open-centre lift carries its load entirely through the two side platforms — which is why the pad and block set matters so much here.

Pads, Blocks and the Two-to-Six-Inch Rule

The 6PL comes with four non-slip rubber pads on the lifting surfaces, plus a set of heavy-density rubber lifting blocks. The pads give the contact surface its grip; the blocks raise the contact point to reach lifting points that would otherwise be too high above the platform, and protect the vehicle where they touch it.

There is one operating characteristic worth knowing before the lift arrives rather than after. Because of the horizontal cylinder configuration, you need to leave some space — roughly 2 to 6 inches — between the lifting surface and the vehicle's lifting points when you position the car. It is not a defect and it is not a tolerance you can ignore; it is how the geometry works on this design, and it is the one thing a new operator gets wrong on day one.

The lock release is air-operated and single-point, so one control releases the locks rather than you working round the lift. Lowering is done on the dump valve lever at the power unit, bringing the platforms down to the nearest locking position.

Specifications

Certification, Stated Plainly

Atlas publishes no independent third-party safety listing for the 6PL, and we are not going to imply one exists. The difference worth understanding is between an outside laboratory that tests a lift design against a published standard and then audits the factory that builds it, and a manufacturer stating conformity on its own authority. This lift is sold on the second basis.

For a home garage that is usually not a live question. It becomes one when a third party is being asked to carry the risk — an insurer covering a commercial premises, a landlord's conditions on a leased unit, a fleet or municipal contract, or a local authority with its own rules on vehicle lifts. If any of those apply, confirm the requirement before you buy, and ask us rather than assuming.

Shipping and Delivery

Ships by freight carrier within the lower 48 at 850 lbs, quoted live at checkout for your actual destination rather than a flat national figure. Delivery is curbside and unloading is the buyer's responsibility: at this weight you need a forklift, a dock, or terminal pickup arranged in advance. A home address rather than a commercial one carries a residential fee.

Inspect the crate before you sign. Photograph anything wrong, write the damage onto the bill of lading while the driver is still there, and keep your copy. That note is what makes a damage claim straightforward.

Warranty

The 6PL carries 2 years structural and 1 year hydraulic cover, parts only. Parts are supplied; the labour to fit them is not.

Two things worth ruling out before you conclude a fault. Fill and bleed properly at installation — air in the system is the usual reason a new scissor lift rises unevenly or settles, and it is not a failure. And check your air supply before blaming the lock release: weak, wet or unregulated shop air behaves exactly like a failing air cylinder.

If it is a real fault, leave the lift assembled. Photograph it in place, note what was on it and what it was doing, and call us before anything is taken apart. A component that arrives already dismantled has lost the evidence the claim rests on.
